Traveling with Skis

I'm taking my first ever trip out west tomorrow, the 3rd. I'm flying out of Burlington, VT to Seattle to meet up with my buddy who lives near Mt. Baker. I've got 189 Seths and was wondering if those are too big/long to be checked in as luggage. I'm going to carry my boots and outwear in a backpack as carry-on in case my skis don't make it. But it jsut seems like those skis are pretty big and I'm worried the airline won't allow them to be checked baggage.
 
You usually have to pay extra and get them checked in specifically as skis, check with the airline, but the size of the skis won't be an issue after that
 
so just go up the ticket counter and tell them they are skis. I know this is probably a stupid question as people travel with skis all the time...it's just my first time.
 
i cant imagine a airline turning down a customer because his skis are to long and very skinny compaired to other shit. u should be fine

as long as you have a bag thats big enough theres no problem. I would reccomend to spilt your shit between two or three checked bags because if you go over there limit which is like 65lbs i think by more then 10lbs you have to pay like 50 bucks which blows....those numbers arent exact but its something like that
 
for internatinal flights with a least 8 airlines (including united) i have checked it in as special baggage which also means its looked after better and it goes in the same hold as pets and stuff so it dosent have other bags on top of it. I didnt pay any more but i think its because of the internatinal baggage limit of 2 bags.
 
in europe it has to go through out sized bagage because they are to long to turn the corners on the conveyor belts with everything else. it dont cost me anything to take 169 publics.
 
I'm going to check into that. I would hate for my brand new skis to be thrown around and shit during the loading/unloading process. Thatnks for your answers guys.
 
Hey, I flew within Canada with my 191 ANTS...I just put them in a single ski bag and then stuffed it with my long underwear, fleece, socks and other soft clothing items..made it in one piece no problems...
 
Make sure to buy a padded bag with wheels on it. For added measure just put some towels around the skis so that they don't get scuffd up. I actually use a snowboard bag because you can fit your boots and other extras in there as well (i use the burton gig, but seems like your skis are too long for it- size 166 and 181 only).

As for the airlilne thing, no airline charges extra for a ski bag. They only charge you for extra weight and I doubt your stuff weighs over 50 pounds (the limit). they will just put it through oversize baggage and you can pick it up at the oversize baggage claim.
 
Im pretty sure some airlines count a ski bag and boot bad as one luggage item, so long as you don't put anything else in the bags.
