Transfering to U of U next Fall

Long story short, I'm finishing up my freshman year at UW Madison. Academics were great, but in terms of social life I messed up and chose to live in a dorm notorious for having lots of frat dudes and sorority girls thinking it might be fun. Mistake. On top of this, skiing comes second only to my family in my life, so I have a pretty hard time making genuine friends that aren't skiers. Also, the park skiing here is decent, but I just broke myself off pretty bad in the park so my days hucking in the park may be limited. So...I am almost confident I'm going to transfer to University of Utah starting Fall 2017 and just had a few questions.

Obviously I won't know anyone, so I was wondering whether you'd recommend living in the dorms to meet more people or should I try to find some homies to live off campus with?

Are there any cool clubs (ski related or other) anyone can recommend?

Alta pass + brighton night pass the way to go?

Bring a car?

Also, if anyone else is looking for a roommate, let me know. Really looking to live with a dedicated shredder(s) and I know you're out there.

Peace and thanks for the help.

The application deadline for Fall 2017 is April 1st. You should make up your mind soon so that you can start getting things in order (transcripts, letters of recommendation, application essays, etc). However, none of the reasons you listed for transferring seem legitimate. You're suffering from "The grass is always greener..." Join some clubs, get involved in some intramurals, ask folks to study together, and you'll start making friends.

I have the majority of the essay done and with a transfer application you don't have to submit an essay or letters of recommendation. Also, I'm not sure if you're in the position to determine whether or not my reasoning is legitimate. While i appreciate your concern, skiing and the outdoors are a huge part of my life and I am not getting that where I am at.

Any other advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds legit to me, if your life is all about skiing you should be somewhere you can do what you love surrounded by like minded people, the U is amazing, the dorms are expensive but you will guaranteed meet a bunch of other skiers and probably make some life long friends. If you're on a budget though you'll meet people other ways too and can rent for super cheap in slc. I'd recommend the dorms, even as a sophomore if the cost isn't an issue

If you are looking for somebody to shred with i'll be a freshman there this fall, and i'm looking for people to as well! Also whats your major?

No social life at one of the biggest party schools in the country? Im sorry but no matter where you go it will probably be the same if you cant make it happen there

Fuck yeah man! My major here at madison is pharmacology-toxicology but they don't have that at the U so we'll figure that otut...something related to biological sciences

Valid point but my schedule these first two semesters has been so hard i dont have the time to be hungover a full morning. Madison is a huge party school but im one more for the outdoors and a little bit off piff eh?

I seriously doubt that.

When you're in 6 classes including 3 science lab courses and maintaining a 4.0 while still driving 2 hours to ski 4-5 days a week please comment again. Not trying to toot my own horn, and I do realize I could not ski and have a lot more time, but as I said earlier skiing is my love.

My buddy goes to the U and absolutely loves it. He skis, mountain bikes, and parties all the time. I'm sure you would like it out there, definitely a big ski school.

If you live off campus be careful, he has shit stolen all the time. 3 bikes, gopro, xbox, laptop... lock your shit up tight.

I came into school with 36 credits. The plan was (and still is) that I can graduate in 3 years, which would give me a year off to work before graduate/med school. I had to have 2 ridiculous semsters in order to do this, one of which is this semester.

So your lack of social life relates to that

Or you're just incapable of making friends who knows

Either way jumping ship after a year isn't going to help either of those

So your only in 3 classes? or did you word it wrong and your in 6 classes where 3 of them have labs. Also one thing to consider with your 3 year plan is making sure all of your credits will actually transfer.

You guys need to stop judging this dude for his own decisions, jesus christ.

Meeting people in utah isn't hard if you're a skier, dorms might not be the best choice, U of U is a commuter school, so the dorms are limited. I would suggest finding some people on here who are going to be the same year (or close) and see if anyone has a room and go from there.

As for other things, where you ski is fully based on who you know usually, you can join the ski club at U of U and get discounted passes. Which mountain you choose is fully up to what you wanna ski, if you wanna ski the best park you'll want an epic pass, if you want a mix of both brighton is a great choice, alta/snowbird/solitude for all around skiing. You definitely want a car, public transit to school is great, not so great for skiing.
