Toyota 4Runner or Subaru WRX

are you fucking kidding me....

the first video on youtube when you search "toyota in snow", while somewhat modest, already disproves this. Try doing this in a 2.5 impreza haha.

ive got a 1995 toyota 4runner with 207,000 miles and i love it. Still hauls and is amazing in the snow. Even better than my subaru outback

i own a 2004 4Runner with 79k on it.

It is very good in the snow, gets fairly shitty gas mileage(18ish MPG), and i can throw my mtb andd/or skis in the back whenever i want to have some fun. I can also take the back seats out, throw a futon mattress in the back and use that to camp out in parking lots, or trailheads. Its actually a really nice perk.

The maintenace is easy and cheap, and they dont really ever have issues.

Also, i am a bigger guy 6'4" and the WRX feels super cramped when i drive one, but the 4Runner, while not as big as a euro or american SUV does feel pretty open.

How often are you really going to be driving in snow and ice? and do you really want a car that is going to make you want to drive fast and careless?

oh come on, you know what i mean. the 4runner wasn't designed to get your adrenaline pumping, the wrx was.

just get a 4runner unless you are actually gonna take care of the wrx and work on it and keep it clean. If you like going fast and sideways and a loud rumble and want to join the subie culture by all means. But dont be like the dicks that just get them then leave them bone stock, dont take care of them etc. it just pisses me off.

hahah my 4runner has an 18 second 0-60.

I would still recommend a 4runner though, I love it.

Its really a matter of whether you would be able to drive kind of fast or fit more than a baby and a box of diapers in the entire back seat

The FJ is really sic truck and way underestimated !! Iv worked on one and when you take a part the inside side panels all the electrical wires run up the side pillar by the window and along the roof, so you could drive the truck in a few feet of water without a prob.

I didn't claim shit, but I certainly know how to drive and don't need to be belittled by a teenaged Subaru fanboy on the internet. Anyone who thinks an STI will perform as well as a 4Runner/FJ in thick slush and deep snow is a damned fool, or blinded by their childhood obsession over the boxer rumble.

Dude. A WRX has no clearance, can't fit a big tire (may or may not matter depending on the type of snow you drive in), doesn't have locking diffs/ATRAC etc. In a couple inches it will probably do just as well as a 4Runner, but when shit gets deep it's no comparison.

You guys are arguing like little school girls and its funny.

If you want a WRX to be an offroad car, it can be done. Bone stock, I have taken my WRX everywhere my buddies can go (granted, not super serious, but your grannie's car couldn't do it.) Granted, I bottom out and it takes me a bit longer, but I get there.

If you want to make your WRX off-road worthy, it can be done. There is a company forget the name that makes spacer lifts (about 2") so you can fit a fatty tire. You can also swap over Forester struts and springs which accounts about 2" as well. Take the front bumper off for the day, add a skid plate or two and you're golden.

I average 20 miles per gallon and i drive my 4 runner like a race car. Also consider this. me being 5 foot 9 I can throw a twin air mattress in the back of the whore hunter and sleep very comfortably. Whore hunter also has more torque and L4 so you can tow your dumbass friends out of ditches and shit. I know i do that alot. 4 runner handles deep snow like a champ. WRX would be spinning its tires and swamped in more than 6 inches of snow. depends what you want. If you live somewhere with mild winters and you like cars get the WRX. You want an SUV and have considerable winters cop the 4 runner. Oh also Pre 2001 4 runners are incredibly reliable. a friend drives a 86 with 290K on it. Rust usually gets whore hunters before the engine goes.

Face to the mother-fucking palm. People have turned Geo Metros into "offroad cars". Is a Geo Metro an offroad car? No. Lifting a WRX won't let you fit a "fatty tire". A "fatty tire" is a 32"+, and would completely fuck over the differentials on a WRX. You would have to completely re-gear a WRX to make use of a big tire, assuming you made the clearance, which brings me to my next point. Low gear ratios are a HUGE advantage that a 4Runner will have over a WRX in deep snow, mud, going up hills etc.
If you're ever near Seattle I'll show you what "real" offroading looks like.

im agreeing with you.. no way will the sti/wrx perform as well in deep snow as the 4runner.. ive had both (well two 4x4 tacomas) and the wrx.. im just saying, people need to clam the fuck down..

A lot of you guys are making a huge deal out of nothing, no fucking shit a 4 Runner is a better offroad vehicle, it's 4wd and has a much higher clearance. However, Subaru's are known for their awd systems and a WRX or Outback with quality snow tires will do just fine for what most people consider normal winter driving. I had an XTerra a few years ago and have a WRX now, sure I can't drive over 4 foot snowbanks like I used to but my WRX can handle snow just fine. Unless the OP is actually rock crawling I don't see why many of you are so strongly against a WRX/Outback.

What the hell?!?!? you're calling him an idiot for giving a completely practical opinion on why he would get a 4Runner over a WRX, especially when you don't even give any sort of reason on why!

Alright, now to actually contribute to this thread.. Although I am a massive car fan and I would take a car 90% of the time over a truck, for pure practicality it would be a lot more useful to get the 4Runner. Yes Subaru's are pretty damn good in the snow, and I love pretty much everything about them. But when you only consider what will actually be useful to you in your situation, between the two vehicles, I think the 4Runner definitely comes out on top

This one has been my baby for 3 years and it still kills it. Working on a project to just convert it into a cross between a proper rally car and just a daily driver. Can't wait to drive this in the snow this winter.

Here's my design on graphics...still working on it. Gotta show some love for Armada!!!

And as far as 4Runner v WRX... Of course I'm going to bias a WRX but they are really apples and oranges. Very different driving experience. If you live in a place with really deep snow, get a 4Runner so you don't get high centered. 6-8 inches on the stock suspension with good snow tires and the WRX is a very fun vehicle.

Pick your poison.

Also consider gas. WRX isn't exactly a GREEN car, but neither of them are. It's not about that.

if you want an AWD car/wagon, go audi, their awd system is quite a bit better. i've been working on and off at a friends import car dealer and subaru's, especially wrx's and sti's were in there all the fucking time, parts are cheap, but im not impressed at all with their reliability/toughness. toyotas are the shit, i love 4runners, cant go wrong there.

and if this isn't a fast/quick choice for you, you should probably go with a Subaru, cause we don't want you on our team. Most 4runner owners are loyal toyota fans.

/hate-- I'm usually not so douchey

thats debtable.. i see a lot of stock 4 runners driven by soccer moms.. but the same it true for subarus

We ended up getting the 4runner. Found one with the 5 speed and 72k miles. When I pull into traffic or fill up I wish I had the subie, probably would have just gone out back. But the I remember this will still be on the road at 250,000 miles, and most problems it has I'll be able to work on.

I think some people think less of you when you drive an SUV, but 21 mpgs alright

WRX without a doubt. For all the times that you are NOT going through a foot of snow, you will enjoy the car much more. We've had the WRX for 50,000 miles with such little maintenance needed.... not to mention you can throw a COBB tune on there and you're at STI performance in a jiffy. Tires are generally cheaper and since the '09 models, they have KILLED it with every aspect of the car.

Just got this guy painted up. The shop totally screwed up on the color although somehow it is kinda sinking in. Might need to change up the design at the end. It's...hmmmmm.... different?

you could get the wrx and slam it, dip it, tune it fuck it whatever or you could get the 4 runner and not look like a tool and actually have a good mountain car.
