Tow in water ski surfing

Anyone heard of this? Do they even make waterskis big enough? I think it would be sick with the right setup. Any ideas on equipment?

i was talking about this with a guy in bali- he said he tried it a few times for fun but he had buoyancy issues. think about when you surf and you lose speed after a big turn or whatever- on skis he said he just sunk and you can't pump like you can on a board. he said it was fun in barelling waves coz he just did a kinda safety grab, kinda like grabbing a rail in a backhand barrell. he said it was like traversing really fast on a really steep stope.

it sounded pretty fun but i guess it will only work in really good waves when you don't gotta worry about losing speed, and who really wants to be messing around with something new when it's pumping?! kinda like wondering whether you could ride a surfboard on the snow, except the only time it would ever work would be in sick pow, so why try?

I think he's talking about surfing a wave with water skis. You would have to use extra fat water skis to do it, or surf really big waves that are like 30 mph.

could be possible but would probably be pointless. you would have to use a jump water ski... a connelly HC800. but why mess with it. they just started making twin tip waterskis which are pretty sick in cable parks... or just go waterski jumping... hella good time.

Cool idea. Is there such thing as switch water skiing? Water skiing seems like one of those sports that hasn't changed much at all. What do I know, I don't water ski.

There is so much you can do on water skis (like riding switch)... people just stopped doing it as soon as wakeboarding became popular. back in the mid 90's people were water ski jumping and throwin crazy shit like 150ft fronts and backflips.. one guy did a double front, sevens, mobes, and discombobulators, which is like a rodeo. Freestyle water skiing is ridiculously fun... you just have to have access to a waterski jump.

i bet that you could do it but only if you had a really fast wave and really fat doubles (like someone said earlier)... and i don't think turning would be the best idea...

I have thought about this but never even come close to trying:

You would definitely need a serious wave so there's really no chance to practice without a chance of experiencing something that you would be allowed to call a wipe-out. Secondly, unless you made the wave you really would like your Sea-Doo fellow to pick u up pretty quick. Also, carving on a wave with two sticks attached to your feet will not be exactly as easy as carving on a groomed slope.

Skiing Teahupoo would be kinda cool tho..

It has been done a bunch lately with wakeboards. Parks bonifay(a pro wakeboarder) took on a pretty big wave on a wakeboard. Some other pros have done it too. They just had a regular jet ski tow them into the wave then rode it as long as they could and launched some pretty good sized air off of some waves too. It would be interesting to see someone try on water skis. The skis would definately have to be fat but I think it could be done.

after seeing that, I guarantee it is possible to do... just don't know how fun it would be... ^^^using the HO wakeskis^^^^ would be to small... they float really well but not as well as traditional jump skis. plus the rocker hurts a little, especially in this case because you are gonna want some forward lean... the HO's are really slippy and you would have trouble not slippin out the back. but doable fo sho...
