Touring v boot packing

so basically, no offense ski industry, but bootpacking is the true secret to excellent skiing above wax above new boots above toes warmers above fancy goggles, right?

I started boot packing after closing two years ago and made so much progress during that pretty short time. Was it the soft spring snow? Or like, maybe end of season untuned skiis? Or does carrying skis on your shoulder give you ski super powers?

I’ve see ppl on touring setups trucking and looking easy breezy while I’m huffing and puffing and shifting my skis from shoulder to shoulder but coming down it doesn’t seem like they go as gnarly, maybe not as much of a power transfer?

Yep, make sure youre bootpacking in the skin track for maximum downhill performance too.

This is how I'm going down the hill next year

Ok I did that once accidentally because I thought I was getting weird looks for not doing that and then I realized it was worse. It happened one time.

well whoever was just looking were weird for not saying anything

Dont forget to check in with other people around you too in the backcountry - its dangerous out there I hear, so you should ask other parties often about their trip plan, weather conditions, and what they think the avalanche risk is.

Once you've mastered bootpacking, barefoot hiking is the next step in progression. The correct technique is to wear your socks on your hands while you shoulder carry your skis with boots clicked into the bindings.

I love your attitude OP. But when you can do 3 laps a day with the same effort as it takes to bootpack once, then switch will be pretty quick

Just make sure that you’re telling everyone that your the best skier on the mountain while your boot packing in the skin track.

Oh and don’t forget to make fun of the split boarders as they pass you too.

Hahaha will do, thanks

Hey, Frank here blogger and owner of Snow Gaper which was born on the slopes of the French Alps by me Frank V. I'm a keen skiing and snowboarding enthusiast who lives in Warren, Ohio with my partner Natalie and daughter Millie. When I'm not on the slopes he can often be found taking on new challenges which include running, swimming and mountain climbing. After sharing my knowledge and my love for the sport I decided to ask my friends to help create snowgaper.com

We are a bunch of ski & snow enthusiasts who decided to put together a website to help people when they are looking for tips, tricks and products for the next trip on the slopes. Those without the knowledge or experience in skiing & snowboarding can find it difficult to find what they are looking for, this is were Snow Gaper can help.

The information on this site is only our opinion from the experience of ski enthusiasts we have in the field. We have no ties to any company or manufacturer so all the guides and reviews are solely our own without any external influence. We hope it helps you out and that you pick up some grains of knowledge that will make your journey a little bit easier.

Sounds like a trick you wanna learn. Go for it. Its a scarry, yet smooth trick. Start small and work your way up.

I grew up bootpacking and it fucking sucks compared to touring. Nothing more rewarding than floundering around up to your armpits for 45 minutes to make it 30 feet.

We used to do this thing in high school for cross country where I'd try and boot pack up the mountain as fast as possible three days a week. I ended up being faster at boot packing than most were at skinning.

Then I got a touring setup and became enlightened.

Okay, first of all, if it really was the real secret, the ski mafia (c)IA conspiracy would have shut this down already.

second of all, everyone who down voted this should be banned from Newschoolers. Fuck touring. Wtf is touring. You can’t do laps in the park on touring skis. Bootpacking all the way.

and if skiing weren’t exclusive enough it’s just super annoying ... you need skis and bindings and skins and long poles for some reason and special boots and none of it is park oriented so like given that this is ns can someone explain why I don’t have one hundred percent support?

I was faster than 90% of people skinning if I didn’t have to stop to relight my spliff

If you don't wanna drop a grand on an airbag pack, just strap yourself to one of those inflatable pool flamingos
