Touring Ski

Okay, I need to add a new ski to my line up. I have guardians ordered and not sure what I want to mount them on.

I have armada jj's so I dont want to much overlap. I want something good in all conditions because as you know the snow isnt going to be perfect on every trek.

skis I have been looking at:

Atomic access 191.

K2 Obsethed

BD Megawatt carbon

armada magic j?

any other suggestions? top of the list is atomic acess right now, since they have some killer deals for skis and skins.

rather than the Magic J, maybe consider the Norwalk as an AT ski?

I have JJ's for Big pow with regular bindings, ending up going with the TST for touring my self, something fun and versatile! Im not at the fattness level you are, but def consider the Norwalk (wider TST).

dear salomon why dont you make your rocker series sidewalled?

leaning towards the automatic right now. I want something I can hammer hard.

Since the Atlas has a flat tail profile and a notch for skin clips, it would make for a powerful touring ski.

We have pre-cut skins that fit the Atlas that are 100% mohair and made for us by the Swiss manufacturer Coltex. There are also options for the Automatics which will fit on raised tail.

if you want a twin i'd look at the K2 Pettitor. if you want a true fat touring ski you may want to look at the K2 SideSeth or Backdrop.

I went with TSTs for my touring ski because the flat tail makes skinning easier, but the ski has a lot of JJ characteristics and apparently that's not what you're looking for. I'll second the other dudes suggestion of 4FRNT HOJIs. If i had money for another setup this season that's what I'd be getting.

The new Norwalk by armada looks fucking sexy; essentially a wider more powerful version of the tst. Also check out the on3p wrenegade and Billy goat. There will be a new Billy goat tour for this season with a thinner core profile and more carbon for a lighter touring ski. The hoji also looks great, essentially a slimmer, lighter, more touring oriented renegade.

the atlas are pretty boss, would make a pretty good co touring ski, maybe a bit too much ski for tighter stuff, but definitely a lot of fun.

Seems like you're leaning more towards something like that than a full rocker/twin/softer ski?

Yeah, I have the jj which is a pretty soft playful ski for me. I want something that can be a charger.

I would get it in the 191 so it would be 125 under foot so something definitely that is going to be burly. the atomic skins are another reason I like them since we all know how fun cutting skins is.

the on3p billy goat was my first choice ski, sadly we dont sell on3p at the shop in which I work so that means no shop deals. I can afford to pay top dollar for a set up. but with the deal I got on the guardians I can get skis and binders for less then the price of Billy goats.

just remember the access is soft as fuck. I'd recommend the rocker2 115 if you dont mind a flatter tail, or the 108 if you want the twin.

the automatic is definitely more charging oriented, like a stiffer more directional benchetler

much heavier though, but im putting a heavy binder on so might as well get a ski that goes all out.

I want to demo all the skis but the soonest i'll have to do that is the weekend before thanksgiving, I was hoping to get out on some early tours this year. tough choices.

haha yes, yes I do. I may stop in slope style next week since I will be heading up that way.

@sklar: all the big brands, way to much k2 and Salomon for my liking but the stuff sells and thats what matters at the end of the day. I try to stick to boots, much more enjoyable.

accesses can be found for so cheap, and there's no doubt they'd work beautifully. the seths would be heavy and the magic j, i'd bet, isn't your best option for variable conditions.

this route's a little more expensive, but at least take a look at k2's flat-tailed offerings. the backdrop looks awesome (though i haven't heard any firsthand accounts) and the sidestash is phenomenal just about anywhere is any snow condition. coomback's a crowd pleaser as well.

Haha, I was wondering what sort of sicko would suggest PFs for touring.
If you're looking to dodge Chinese manufacturing, ON3P is doing tour builds on both Viciks and Billy Goats this year. Instead of our usual two sheets of glass/bamboo/carbon stringer, it's two full width carbon sheets and a thinner core. Drops a pound off each ski.
Really excited about the 191 BG Tour. I'm mounting some up with Dukes so I can ski my AT boots inbounds for coaching and have a good option for short tours around the resort.
