Touring on Hellbents

Has anyone tried it? I have an unused pair laying around without bindings, and I'm not really sure what type of binding to get.

What you plan on doing? short trips with big jumps or long distance with minimal impact?

Frame binding for the first choice, tech binding for the LD.

Go frame, tech on hellbents is a hilarious thought, but a terrible idea.

Honestly, I would put touring bindings on just about any other ski over hellbents though....

No long tours, just shorter backcountry stuff and some jumps now and then. Tech bindings is not an option, but I'm considering the CAST system.

i used trekkers + fks on my hellbents for a few seasons, it was manageable but very heavy and loose. a frame binding will work pretty well but they'll be fairly heavy, that's what i would go for if youre going to be skiing inbounds in variable snow, and hitting decent sized jumps and cliffs on a regular basis.

I've got dukes on my hellbents and I'll be the first to say that they're my heaviest ski, but nothing beats getting them up above some crazy fun lines! Worth it in my opinion. It just depends on how playful your touring spots are.

I ride JJ's. I was super worried about the weight, but in the end the decision matched my skiing. Long tours, no jibbing, etc... It was more manageable than I imagined, but JJ's are quite a bit narrower than Hellbents.

I think you pretty much get used to whatever weight your setup is. That being said, I got my Hellbents off a guy who mounted them for touring and after a few days said fuck this and put them on CL. If all your trying to do is get a little higher than your average resort skier for some fresh turns on a busy day then you'll be fine. But your probly going to get worked in bigger hikes.

As a sidecountry setup, sure...

I use some Rossi S6's with dukes for shorter tours, or tours with low elevation gain.

Hellbents would break trail like fucking monsters, but they just won't do so well on extended tours, or for tours with large climbs.

Mount em with dukes, they'll be alright.

I had a friend who toured on hell bents for ever. I tour on a wide Reverse / reverse. i have never had an issue, nor has he.

If you are using a very well used/ established ski track, it cam be a pain in the ass. but why the hell are you touring in the same place as all these other people?

As for as the Day-wreckers thing goes.... They are generally an awful idea. rebrand them, call them what you will .. but you can get a pair of Dukes or Guardians for a very similar price, and they are awesome.

I use a tech binding on my revers/revers skis. Not sure why a tech binding on hell bents would be a bad idea. they have a super low stack height and a light weight. I use a G# ion personally, bomber binding. I even use them on my resort skis... If you have compatible boots, then tech bindings kill it.

You can tour on hellbents, just won't get much uphill traction on steep skin tracks.i sometimes tour in 192cm rockers without a problem, you'd want crampons for steep uphill sections

I would run into an Altaholic out in Catherine's rocking the clownbents every now and then. He was setup with a pair of Dukes. To be fair the descents looked like he was having an all time. However, hiking back into the lift access did NOT look like he was enjoying himself. The Hellbents are shockingly heavy.
