Toronto teen shot 9 times then tasered by cops

the dude was holding a Swiss Army knife. a little tiny blade. was standing alone on a deserted bus surrounded by armed cops. then they lay waste to him. shoot him 9 times THEN taser him. so unnecessary. They could have just tasered him and been done with it or talked him out of whatever he was doing easily.

here's a video

While I think the force was excessive this is another clear example if you advance towards the police with any kind of weapon you're going to get blasted. Law enforcement is trained that way and when I comes down to it, it's always going to be a us or them mentality. Shoot first, worry later.

Yeah, I mean did they have to shoot him? No. Can they legally? I dunno about canada but if you don't listen to a cop in the USA they can shoot you, usually I feel like they go for non-lethal shots first. Not sure why they didn't taser him first, if he had a large knife or a gun, I could justify this situation but pretty fucked up he has a tiny knife and 5-6 officers couldn't just flank him and taser him.

actually watch the video. you'll see that he clearly is backing away from the cops from being beside the drivers seat to behind the drivers seat just before he gets shot. he is a threat to no one.

don't say shit till you watch the video. it's honestly despicable behaviour by the police. they could have EASILY disarmed him without lethal force. he could easily have even been talked out of it with a little more patience. not like Canadian cops have much else to do.

also they didn't even contact the emergency forces whose sole jobs are to diffuse situations like this without harm (or minimal harm) to either party.

No they dont go for non llethal shots. When a police officer draws his weapon and fires, that person is going to die. A non lethal shot is just a massive lawsuit.

Seen this on breakfast television this morning. Another case where we will just have to wait and see where it goes I guess.

i'm usually all for cops shooting mother fuckers that deserve it, but this just seems wrong. and what i don't understand is why they shot like 3 or 4 rounds and then waited, waited, waited, waited, waited, and then opened fire again. i mean, really? and THEN you have to taser him? what the fuck? there has to be more to this story. i'm interested to see how this plays out.

not even in canada are the cops nice. once more are they using there authority to much. couldnt have confiscated the 2 1/2 inch knife they just had to shoot him

LOLOLOLOLOL tiny swiss army knife? I heard he pulled a big ass butchers knife and proceeded to threaten passengers off the bus, yes 9 shots are excessive, but the kid defiantly wasn't innocent.

Yes because tasers are ALWAYS 100% effective... especially against people who are obviously out of their minds due to drugs/mental illness.

fully agree. Based on that video, there are a few things here that don't add up, no matter what he was doing beforehand

~ NO ONE was on that bus. he was not an immediate threat to police. he's contained. they could have sat there all night rather than jumping to lethal

~ that happened wayyy too fast. there was enough time to make a rational decision and go non lethal, or try and talk him down, yet somehow they jumped to 9 shots

~ why the fuck did they taser him after shooting 9 times? that office is one shitty shot

~ should have called SWAT or DART or whatever tact team they have in toronto, if those morons couldn't handle it themselves.

~ didn't attempt to negotiate at all. "one step forward and you're finished" is all well and good in the movies, but here in real life, it doesn't really cut it

i just think there were so many other options that they didn't even consider.

I live in Portage part time, and hour away the rest of the time; so this is pretty local for me:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_of_Tim_McLean

So who knows, maybe after incidents like this the way Police are trained then handle these situations are a lot more strict and so forth... Alternatively Vince Li was still armed with a knife and a big one at that, and was holding Tim's decapitated head, and they got him off the bus alive by tasering him twice.

Personally taking these two scenarios and comparing them, I feel like the Police acted too quickly with this Toronto happening. For the Police they clearly had the teen outnumbered and it seemed evident that everyone had evacuated the bus and made it off unharmed. The teen didn't appear to be advancing on the Police at all, rather the opposite. So why the Police had to act so quickly and so lethally, just seems unnecessary.

At the end of the day, it happened and can't be reversed, and I assume everyone involved will be dealt with accordingly, or at least I would like to think so.

lol dude, fuck what you feel. the cop did what he had to do, 9 shots might be excessive, but whatever thats what happened.

That was way too excessive. There was no imminent threat to the public or police. Could have just waiting until he got off the bus and tasered him, or tear gassed the bus or something. He didn't need to die.

Cops dont go to jail. They lie and get away with it.

When they are caught lying, the judge dissmisses perjury charges.

Look at the Robert Dziekanski case in Vancouver

just fyi anyone who thinks the shots were justified, watch this video, no shooting. one taser and they're able to bring him down with a MUCH bigger knife in a much more public forum. the shots weren't necessary at all.

apparently, in public forums (i know different countries and all), things go down a little more like "they should" and not how a single maniac cop wants them to.

This.

No such thing as "non-lethal shots". This isn't some fucking hollywood movie where you can place bullets knocking the knife out of a bad guys hand, or hit him in the kneecap so he goes down and is incapacitated. You shoot to stop the threat, simple as that

and what are they going to do open fire around a crowed a people? have a knife pulled on you first then judge what you would do.

holy fuck, im

so sick of people complaining about this.

kid had a knife, he pressed it up against the ttc drivers chest, he was

threatening to kill people on the street car. when all the passengers were

removed (by police) from the street car, the attacker ignored police, advanced

at them, was shot, and unfortunately was killed, justifiably.

i think quite

simply, society just likes to criticize the police, regardless.

no matter

what they do, they are wrong.

what if this

kid stabbed and killed someone? what if he killed a cop? you would all be

saying oh, the cops are useless, why didnt they shoot him??

9 shots is

too many?? says who? how many shots are ok?

why did they taser him? maybe he was still a threat, can you see through the

side of the streetcar?

about 7-8 years ago now there was a guy who ran through union station with a

sawed off shotgun looking for his girlfriend. when police finally found him he

was outside on front street holding onto a girl with his gun at his side.

again, the police could have used non-lethal force to stop this situation.

instead, they set up a sniper across the street and put a bullet right between

the guys eyes killing him instantly.

not a single peep out of that story, the city as a whole congratulated the

police force for their quick action and thinking, even after the SIU

investigated the scenario.

for those that are unaware, Toronto is Canada's largest city, by FAR.

its actually the 6th largest in all of north america.

for the size and population of Toronto it is actually ridiculous how little

crime there is.

why?

well i think its obvious, and agree with me or not, its just my opinion.

but Torontonian's know, that if you run around Union Station with a shotgun

threatening lives, youre going to get shot and killed.

if you pull a knife on a street car threatening lives, youre going to get shot

and killed.

and honestly, as a 30 year old who has lived in Toronto his entire life, i

wouldnt want it any other way.

this guy pulls a knife and threatens the lives of INNOCENT people, on a public streetcar, in the middle of downtown Toronto.

he winds up getting shot and killed by police.

GOOD!

surely i cant be the only person who thinks this way.

I personally love it when asshats say "they should have shot him in the leg" because it lets me know they have exactly zero functional knowledge of how that shit works and I can now just ignore everything they say from that point on.
