Torn Meniscus

Is it possible to continue to ride park on a torn meniscus because I've been told that its not a good idea to but it wasn't too aggravating when i was the other day...Any inputs??

usually, when you ride with a torn anything in your knee, you just put yourself at a higher risk of injuring other important stuff in your knee. so, with that in mind, do what you wanna do.

The meniscus is the cartilage that surrounds the kneecap on the top and the bottom to prevent bone friction

There was a 1 in a million chance you understood the reference. Guess you couldn't rise to the challenge

I competed with a torn mcl & meniscus a few years back, I chilled for about a month prior to the comp, not really skiing anything other than small rails. I was doing rehab at the time also.

FYI knee braces do jack shit for this type of injury so don't even bother. Your best bet is to not land backseat at all while its still injured. Switch landings are a lot easier to absorb and avoid the backseat.

Goodluck and don't push it

I too suffer from a torn meniscus. if you want to ski on it, it depends on where the tear is and how big it is. I avoided switch landings and kept it pretty strong and it's been fine for me. I get occasional pain from running or mogul skiing but it's tolerable. Also my knee clicks when I walk sometimes, it's really loud.

The meniscus is actually located on top of your Tibia. They are two semi circular shaped wedges on both sides of the knee sloping inward. Along with reducing fiction, it also helps keep the knee in place and absorbs impact.

As long as it feels ok, go for it. But, if it starts to get worse, ,you may want to consider resting it a bit. No reason to make it even worse and have to get surgery.

I skied all last season and played high school ball with one last year. The pain never got too bad because I didn't go full out at all last ski season after it. Take a couple mellow days to see how it feels and go from there

ding ding ding

This guys got it.

Tons of people have torn menisci and do nothing about. Pending where the tear is, you may not need surgery. It would also be likely that if you did need surgery, they would just shave off the torn bit - which only takes a few weeks to heal

Getting your meniscus repaired is a different story. Much longer rehab

Unless your knee is physically giving out on you, locking, or the pain is terrible, you can probably continue to function normally on it.

Go beast on those glutes, hamstrings, and eccentric quad strength, it will help bro.

It really just depends on the type of tear you have. The biggest risk is that you'll tear parts of it off and then it becomes a whole worse problem. You should go see a orthopedic physician and have him evaluate what's best for your knee, not the guesses of people on NS

That sucks.

For op: just have the surgery. You don't want to put it off and just put yourself at a higher risk of injuring it more. The surgery is very minor. They make an incision about the size of a dime, remove the damaged tissue, and stitch you back up. Withing a week or two you will be off crutches and within 3 or 4 you will be 100% (unless you are alexsupertramp)

I'm sorry but this is pretty much wrong. It really depends on where the tear is and how big it is. I have not had surgery because it healed pretty well, and was not in a bad spot. You should consult and orthopedist, and see what he thinks. If you let it heal properly there's a chance you wont need the knife, just a little PT.

Or me. I got surgery and they didn't scrape it. They put a couple stitches in and it took me ~4 months to be back to 100%.

I've had a small tear in mine for almost 2 years now. I ride 75+ days a year but its definitely a painful injury. I'm skiing mostly pow and big mountain lines these days, and try to avoid the park. When the snow is dry and light I don't even notice it, but when it gets heavy or choppy it hurts like a bitch. Also find myself having to ice it most nights to keep the swelling down.

If its not a big tear you could probably make it through the season (in a lot of pain). If the tear is serious, I would go ahead and fix it tho. Recovery its pretty short (6 weeks I believe) and leaving it untreated can result in more serious complications (knee dislocations)

I'm thinking about getting mine fixed this spring.
