Torn acl.. can you ever go back to the park?

Are there any people who have had their acl torn? Have you had surgery?

How was the feeling when you finally got back to the park after rehab? Were you able to do jumps?

I have tried a season without surgery and with intensive physiotherapy but it was not strong enough to do some jumps in the park. I've already had an operation on my acl, however, after six months I've had it torn again after a bike-accident. Therefore I wonder if it's even worth to go back to the park with an operated acl?

Im 21 years old and because of this story I had to expose two seasons without skiing. This is a terrible situation when skiing is so important to you!

definitely can go back on the park with good pt and patience. Ive found meniscal damage is way more of a bitch to deal with over time compared to the ACL

I tore my acl when I was 16, I've been skiing park every year since, about 12 years.

ACLs are a myth.

Yea, after hearing Tom had no ACL that year, I was blown away.

Also, love how it's under Snowboarding tag lol

I love watching his stuff back when he had no ACL, because he had to land almost everything switch or else he'd fuck it up even more.

Bump bc my girlfriend tore hers and is curious. How did you guys reintegrate into skiing? She is at 6 months and is wondering if she could ski groomers. She just started agility traingin

certainly. I'm 22 and have had 3 knee surgeries (ACL, reconstruction, 8x meniscus). i missed nov-march last season due to an injury and broke my collarbone 3 weeks ago...i hear your pain brother. seasons without skiing hurt more than any injury.

just do your PT and get strong. I only did PT 6 months and built my strength by just being a normal kid. i started skating and hiking again and within a month I was 110% stronger and healthier.

no matter what your experience is/was, it is possible. don't loose hope. freeskier mag had an article this month about losing your identity as a skier when an injury takes it away...check it out.

A close friend of mine (RIP) had inoperable knee issues after an avalanche. Basically the doctor said that your knee is almost done and a knee replacement will survive only 10-15 years of gentle use. He said to me that you have to understand the risks of the backcountry, that you can die in an avalanche. But you can also have a serious injury, one that won't let you ski again, which is almost worse.

My bro tore his ACL, had surgery, rehab'd his knee and is now back to skiing park and injuring every other joint in his body successively.

damn, I hate to hear that homie! Id take some time to heal up good n proper so you don't fuck it up even more and prolong park riding even longer.

Be careful, take it slow, and do your rehab.

I tore mine back in 2004. It got me to leave ski bumming in Tahoe after several years. I now ski 35-40 days a year, so I'm not the same skier I was, but had I stayed in Tahoe I probably could have kept skiing at the same level. You just have to do your rehab and take your time. I was actually lucky, my first year post surgery I was in grad school and I devoted myself to that, didn't ski much. That was probably a good thing.

I can't emphasize enough to really work hard at PT.

Had surgery on mine last week, was highly recommended that i should have surgery now and miss out on abit of the season next year (Southern Hemisphere) then not have surgery and fuck my knee up even more. Physio said if i rehab hard could be back skiing in 8 months. Id say get it done so you can shred hard next season.

Broken both collarbones, one of them twice. Obviously different than ACL but I started doing things too early and my last break didnt reset the collarbone very well. Been fixing it with posture and "excersizes" for over a year. Don't get back into things too early...

good to know...how long do you think you should wait? especially how much longer after it starts feeling "normal"

i was thinking of skiing in two more weeks which would put me right at the end of 6 weeks.

Sounds like you're past most the pain. Sleep on your back as much as possible, walk with shoulders back and strong posture. The 3rd time around I ended up getting a brace that wrapped around my shoulders to keep it in a neutral position. I started skiing at 4 weeks, would not recommend it unless its an empty mellow day. Wait till 6-7 weeks and you start lifting weights etc comfortably. My first break was good after 5 weeks in sling, the second took 7-8 weeks. Can depend on your type of break and other factors. I did not get surgery

remember kids, glory fades and pain lasts forever. don't fuck around with your body. you won't be 20 and a ski bum your whole life.

Fix your fucking ACL.

The reason it didn't last the first time was because you were being an idiot and not being careful enough. The graft is not 100% at the 6 month mark. They say it takes a full year to get back to 100%. Even if you had to take the next 2 seasons off, it would still be worth it in the long run to get it fixed. Your primary concern right now should not be skiing. It should be how soon you can go under the knife. You'll thank me when you're 30.
