Top 5 Bands

just wanted to drop that this is the douchiest post of all time. it's finally happened.
"if you understand real music and the technicality/improv of jam rock you will understand why my (and mostly everybodys) list is 3000x better."
are you serious? jam music is... good. i'll listen to it with anything else, but just because they're talented musicians doesn't mean that write good songs. If it sounds good, then its good, no matter the amount of effort put into creating the music. I feel sorry for you that you limit yourself to one kind of music based on a reason that has nothing to with how good it sounds.
sort of a rant, so/rant

Styx, Guns N Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath

^ not really in any order

It's Black Flag!

and fuck you. you have absolutely no appreciation for music if you think Black Flag and Grateful Dead are horrible.

thing is if not that much effort goes into making a song it ends up sounding boring to someone with an ear for music (not in all cases). Take a band like Fall Out Boy or All American Rejects for example. A lot of people would argue that their music sounds good (if you're actually reading this, i don't like their music they're just examples). Thing is a lot of their music sounds the same because their chorus and generally the whole song consist of a handful of power chords. With a jamband (i listen to a lot of other music by the way) you get a group of guys who can improvise, and are very talented musicians. This helps in the studio as well as live. Each artist brings a little something to the table, whether it be a transitional drum part, or a face melting guitar solo. I'd listen to a Umphrey's studio album over any album by the bands posted by that girl earlier in this quoting bananza, just because listening to the same style of music in every song bugs me.

That being said Jam bands aren't the only good bands out there, but the main idea i was getting at was that effort and musical talent do in fact go along way into making music more enjoyable.

HAhahaha, you're too dumb to realize how much the dead influenced many of the bands today. Even the crummy bands you probably listen too.

Kids these days

SUBLIMEis in my opinion the greatest band ever. Not my favorite band, but the greatest band ever. I rarely meet someone who does not like Sublime and usually those people are lame anyway.
then, in no particular order:
The BeatlesErik Petersen/Mischief BrewCelph Titledtoo hard to pick, maybe Bob Dylan, or The Specials or something.

Talented musicians kind of delves into being a good song writer and good at playing. At least for me.

Just to be able to stay together through the whole song is pretty crazy. Plus the fact that no show, or even song is ever the same. Some bands every show on the tour is the same setlist, played the same way. It's refreshing to go to some phish shows, you never no what kind of a show, or what songs you're going to get.

you know a bands good, when they can change the style they play multiple times in their career, and keep selling out venues.

First of all, i don't listen to 'pop music'. None of the bands I listed are in that genre, at all. Secondly, just because I'm a girl I think you somehow feel the need to be all 'manly' and 'tough' on the internet and bash my taste in music, when many of the bands I listed are also in previous posts, i.e. MGMT, Sublime, Dave Matthews, the Beatles, etc.
The point of the thread was to post YOUR top bands, meaning everyone is entitled to their own opinion. If you don't like what I like, then fuck, who cares? Does it really bother you that much that you need to bitch about it on an online thread? And for me personally, it's not only about the music. Alot of my favorite bands have to do with people or places or times in my life they remind me of and have alot more value to me personally or emotionally and HAVE been life changing.
Jesus christ get your head out of your ass and grow up.

i'm more hardcore than metal but i love veil of maya, so technical. I think all the sumerian bands are by far the most progressive out there.

So you still think the Grateful Dead influenced the bands I listen to? Exactly, go listen to your hippy fippy BULLSHIT!

You're such an angry little douche. Chill out. I listen to many different style. your lack of respect for music is sad.

Have fun being angry at everyone.

there is good taste on NS!

here is mine i guess but picking 5 is pretty much impossible

Modest Mouse

Arcade Fire

The XX

Beatles

Blue Scholars-sort of a joke

I didn't even listen to it, but I'm gonna go ahead and say the technicality of the guitar playing. Also, The Grateful Dead were Greg Ginn's favorite band. This means they heavily influenced Black Flag. If that band you posted is anything with the "core" suffix, then they have some debt to pay to Black Flag. Also, Henry Rollins is one of like, 4 or 5 different singers who were in Black Flag. I had a stage where I preferred Keith Morris better myself. That said, calm down dude.

Broken Social Scene

The National

The Clash

Against me

XX or mountain goats or M83 or electric president duno about that last spot

good for Gregg Ginn, the fact still stands that the music I listen to was not influenced by The Grateful Dead and if you bothered to listen you would realize it was not influenced by Black Flag either.

Maelstrom: Do you care to name the kind of music that your band plays? We at Maelstrom like to think of Heaven Shall Burn as a metalcore band: sort of taking the best stuff from metal and hardcore. What was the inspiration in choosing your musical style?Matthias: We also think that we are a metalcore band, although we don't care that much about something like a "kind of music." Actually there's just good and bad music. Unfortunately you need to name the style of a band ...just to give the listeners a small hint what they have to expect. We always loved metal. I grew up with bands like Iron Maiden, Accept, Judas Priest, Slayer, Manowar, Anthrax and Metallica. Later we were fascinated by all the early 90s death metal bands like Dismember and such. One thing that always bothered us a bit was all those dumb as fuck lyrics. Okay, it's just entertainment, but we became kinda tired of it. That's why some of us got in touch with hardcore or even punk. I really don't think that there are more intelligent people, but some of the bands have lyrics that are much better than all this gore- and splatter-cliché. In the mid 90s this whole metalcore thing caught our attention. Belgian bands like Congress and Liar mixed the 80s thrash metal with hardcore attitude. That's what we liked... So I guess without these bands, bands like Heaven Shall Burn would not exist...at least not like they are now. Earth Crisis was also one of the most important bands for us...

There ya go!!

Depends on what kind of Top 5... top 5 of all time? Current top 5? Because although there have been some damn good bands posted in here, if these are peoples' top 5 of ALL TIME... damn, brotha. It's pretty pretentious to list a top 5 of all time to begin with... no matter how much you think you know about music, there's thousands of incredible bands you never knew existed. So here's my CURRENT top 5...

1. Between the Buried and Me

2. Soulive

3. George Thorogood and the Destroyers

4. The Mars Volta

5. Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble

Grateful Dead (including all branch off bands futhur, Ratdog, Phil and Friends, the dead...)

tool

Moe.

Yonder Mountain String band

Phish

there is nothing like power cords and horrible solos to get you into the pit huh. You sir have a lot of say but can't back shit up. Please close your mouth and stop telling everyone how terrible their music is. If you think we are all ignorant then take a hard look at your self.
