more companies means that the sport is growing. look at snowboarding. they have too many board companies to name and their sport is huge!

Poniverus and 4frnt

nothing wrong with more skis, just means more to choose from

hardcore lousiana fanboat shit

'fuck! there's a damn boulder on the slope'

'put butter on my butt and call me a biscuit!'

More skis to choose from, which aren't own by one of the majors. Also more companies competing for business means prices will go down and the quality has to go up. Its all good for us and the sport.

The rebirth of a legend...try not to wet
yourself.

yeah it's supply and demand. And once these new companies get there bugs worked out, they're all decent skis anyhow

Supply and demand...hmmm. I don't think there's gonna be enough demand for these small companies to stay in business especially with huge corporate ski companies like Salomon, Dynastar, etc. to smash them their huge quantity of resources. I could be wrong (obviously), but I think a lot people exaggerate how many people are into NS skiing enough to BUY a pair of skis from a relatively unknown company.

I think it's cool that they're starting up because it creates competition, which is good for us as consumers. It will also force the larger companies to get their shit together. In the long run, the larger companies will win, but these small ski companies can fill their niche markets as long as they don't over produce.

They'll survive as long as they don't get too ambitious and as long as their product is quality. Making quality product is difficult and expensive. Line did a great job of making good shit and even better job of marketing it. They also only made as many skis as they could sell, so they didn't drown.

Should be cool to see how these companies do.

i think the new companies have a shot. i mean look at line(i dont care if you think they suck) they started 5 years ago when the only companies that were around we the big names like rossi and salomon. needless to say line held its own and is still here. if these new companies make a good product and market it right they have a chance.

actually, it may not be the large companies that will win in the end, at least in this aspect of sking. the smaller companies know what we want because they are deisinged by skiers like us and they listen and take advice. Dont get me wrong, large sompanies are steppin it up and puttin some more effort in but they make the large amount of money from other aspects of skiin like recreational, and, gasp, race skis. With the huge efforts put forward by the smaller companies they make better skis for the kind of skiing that we all do and love.

Also, i know i love supporting these new companies becasue of this. i would rather buy a smaller sompanies ski like ninthward or liberty or armada because i know my money is going into the research and development of better and more advanced skis. Where as the money spent for a pair of 1080's might go toward a totally differnt type of ski.

^^Yeah, I don't mind buying skis from a small company as long they don't suck. Sometimes, it can be difficult to gauge the quality of a new company's product. So I'll let all you people try it out first.

Seriously though, when you buy a computer, who do buy it from? Some bs company that you've never heard of? No, because when you hardrive melts you don't have a warrantee. Same with skis. Of course there are exceptions.

theres lots of people who are buying Armada and 4FRNT skis, and they're both small companies. Besides, a lot of NS skiers would rather support a small core company than a giant like Salomon. Oh and there is a demand for twintips, I know I just bought some Fujatives and they were hard to get.

Sure there's a demand, but just like you said, you tried to get Fujatives...from K2. K2 is huge, just like Salomon. I see 45 year old firstimers on those skis. I'm talking about start up companies. We'll see if they're around in 5 years.

with snowboarding burton and forum are still leading the way...i am not against the new companies, it just seems like to support themselves they have to charge lots of money. and there is now way that they worked out all their kinks after one season of prototypes

Theres no doubt that skiing is growing and getting bigger by the day, but i feel as it gets bigger it gets less cool, back when i was busy being a fetus and all in the late 80s, snowboarding was still underground, and only kids who loved it did it, there was no kids faking it, thats how skiing is now, but as it grows i kinda fear that its gonna become like snow boarding in that for every1 sick skier whose also a nice guy, theres gonna b 10 who are god awfull and are total dicks. I wish the sport could just stay where it is now in that its expanding, but without the results of expansion

i think snowboarding got to the point where it was so mainstream that EVERYBODY wanted a piece of the action. there were so many companies that got into it because they saw a bunch of kids spending shitloads of money on brand name stuff and they wanted in. whoever said it up higher, you're right..the companies have finally started to 'weed themselves out' and now (basically) only the 'real' brands have survived. i don't think freeskiing has gotten to that point yet, but it probably will in some way, shape, or form in the future. then, it'll do the same thing and weed itself out.

Newschool skiing will most likely develop as snowboarding did. The major brand names: rossi, dyna, salomon, k2, etc, will survive. However, out of the independent smaller companies, in all likely-hood only a couple will survive.

Look at snowboarding. Initially snowboards were manufactured by major companies just like skiing. However, over time a few core companies arose out of quality of product/marketing/sheer luck to stick around today. A few good examples of these are Burton and Forum. Burton was started by a guy making boards in his living room, and has progressed to be one of the leading names in boarding, just as Line seems to be progressing.

In the end, the major brands will stick around, so long as the market exists. Other than that, i predict the major companies to be Line, Armada, 4frnt, maybe another one will survive or appear. But lets face it, not all will make it. As the other guy said, snowboarding grew to over 200 companies before killing itself off down to 20. The same thing will happen with skiing, its just who will survive thats the question.
