To become a ski bum

from what me and my friends have done- here's my tips:

1. search your resort by your skiing type. for example- my friend did a season in ferney,bc and chased fresh lines for the whole season. on the other hand-i spent a month of ski bumming in avoriaz, france, because i wanted to live on the mountain, and have my time split just around 50-50 between park and pow.

2. find out what's your budget, how much time do you want to spend there, and if you want to work there.

i'm not really familiar with living costs in north america, but in europe it starts at around 700 euro/month and goes up- depending on what kind of a place you live in and on the food you'll have..

3.find yourself a roommate- to lower the living costs. (rent is cheaper, and if you buy groceries together it would come out around 20% cheaper)

as for good cheap places- i'd look for austria resorts like mayrhofen or st. anton. prices are pretty good and there's a lot of seasonaire accommodations over there. + they have sweet parks and side-country/backcountry

Other than whistler, what mountain in Canada stays open in the summer and has a decent terrain park?

stayed 5 night in the crystal parking lot doing this exact thing. except id shared a sube with another dude and id go swim in a heated pool to clean up

There is none. There is a shortage of good terrain parks in Western Canada in the winter, and Whistler is the only place open in Canada past May.

Where did he live and what kind of job did he get in Fernie? I was seriously considering taking the winter term off with some friends and going there, but I'm not sure where we could get a place or where I could find work to make enough money for rent/food/tickets.

No idea, I haven't been up on the glacier in the summer in a decade or so. Whistler regional forum could probably get you a good answer.

i live at a mountain and can vouch for the thing someone mentioned about girls. most girls in ski towns are taken already and meeting new girls sucks because there are way too many guys. get ready for that

Try to get laid off (but not fired) and collect unemployment. That'll make it easy.

You can try male escorting (you'll make more if you cater to gay men than ladies fyi) as a good job that will let you ski.

If there is a will there is a way. Anyone can rock up to a mountain and find a job as a liftie and find roomates or employee housing. And thats worst case scenario if you don't find a better job and have a good plan for housing.

I sell shit online so I can go/do wherever I want. See if you can do something that lets you work remotely.

I may be mistaken, but I believe getting a work visa in the US is nearly impossible if you are Canadian. If that's true, then a lot of awesome places in the States will not be possible for you. I was told that Canada doesn't issue many work visas to Americans and vice versa. I live in Vail and there are no Canadians.
