To anyone who thinks it's too hard to ride pow in your park skis

i mean you can obviously do it but it takes a lot more energy and still doesn't work as good if you had fat skis. I can't afford them so ive always used my park skis and its usually fine unless its like 3-4ft plus though

its not hard, but it certainly isnt as fun as it could be.

I've ridden steamboat pow on centered park skis and just poofed through it. I tried to ride mammoth snow with centered park skis........workout.

OP is right. Also, if your pow skis aren't floating, your not going fast enough. IMO, and this isn't directed at anyone, but I think the 'average' park rat these days really isn't that strong of a skier outside the park, like if you start skiing at like 13 and go right to skiing park. Again, IMO.

I kind of like this as a comparison to hockey goalies. When the start hockey at 12 or 13 and go right to goalie there bad goalies because they never learned how to skate. But those who play as a forward when their 6-10 then change to goalie later are usually stronger because they are strong skaters.

Yep, gotta get the basics down. There is a huge correlation between great park/pow skiers and racing as kids.

Or they switched to snowboarding......

And not everyone can afford to be properly trained and on the "race team" zbphoto so don't make too many generalizations on that topic.

I have skied in 2 feet of pow on 155 afterbangs and I'm 5'11. It was meh. But I would consider my self a pretty good skier

They aren't that bad if they are mounted back far enough. But if you are center mounted, you have to mobb and ride backseat, its really easy to tip dive or hook one tip and eat shit

Well obviously, racing competitively is so expensive. I'm not saying you didn't race when you were a kid your not a good skier or you can't be amazing at park. It's just a lot of pro skiers grew up racing or skiing moguls before park became popular.

size does matter i tried riding what little powder that vail got last year with my 178 laroses and i was having trouble...but due to my size of 6'3" i couldnt gain enough speed due to lack of surface area

I live in Utah, therefore I'm an expert. Now shut up and sit down and take a listen.

If you're having trouble, yes, you suck. However, you do have to change your form to ride centermounted park skis in the big fluffy steep and deep. You have to sit backseat and ride your tips. Does it suck? To some degree, yes. But I also enjoy slashing deep turns on park skis, or even single tip groomer bomber skis.

That said, powder skis are the best thing ever invented. Fuck sliced bread.

it is different fersure. you have to find your center in powder. more surfing motion and the fast you go the more control you'll have

completely depends on the snow pack. If its light enough skiing powder can be really fun on any ski. Skiing on park skis in wet heavy powder typically sucks tho. Most park skis have lots of flex in the front to make the ski playful. In sticky or heavy snow it make your feel like your going to tomahawk.

My rock skis are center mounted 182 ar7. I was actually stoked to be on skinnier skis this day because it made the snow seem deeper.

Dude what!? 3-4ft deep? Do you know how deep that is? I don't know if i have ever riden in 3-4ft deep snow that is insanely deep. You would be struggling, alot, in 8 inches of pow with park skis man. Park skis are not good to ride pow with, at all.

if your skiin fuckin deep deep semi steep pow on center mounted park skis its literally impossible to ski without leaning back extremely hard and turning can be very difficult until you get goin fast, but then you hit the flats of a pow run, and your skis sink in the pow and you double eject. So yes its really hard to ski pow on park skis regardless of how good of a skier you are

I remember this experience I had in deep, I mean deep pow in Flaine, France. To start the day I had my park skis and this very deep pow was tricky and tiring and.. well not as fun as when this skishop was lending in exchange of your skis as a bail fat powder skis. That's where I tried the ARG 2012 (which I reviewed) and I can tell you that powder skiing isn't the same with 86mm or 135mm...

I'm on the fence with this one, but I'll have to side more with OP. This is mainly because people need to learn to ski on shitty setups first. It really helps you become a good skier. Especially to the point above how some good park skiers can't ski the rest of the mountain. I don't want to start a shitstorm here, so like I said NOT ALL park skiers, but some. Learn to ride the rest of the mountain properly and you can do it. People managed to do it on pencils back in the day, so 90 underfoot shouldn't be impossible. I did it for quite some time before I got pontoons. That being said, powder skis might just be the best invention ever, because skiing on pencils is a fucking workout, and although you can do it, nothing lets you slay all day like something 110 or more underfoot.

Sparknotes: Learn to ski the rest of the mountain and yeah you can use your skinny skis for pow, but damn is it nice to have something that floats!

Learn how to ski properly before getting into park and all your wildest dreams will come true.

Properly doesn't mean professionally. You don't have to master carvings and many other things which I don't know to go in the park and ski in powder. As long as you can ski, well, I can say that I can ski everywhere on the mountain.

We had about 3ft of fresh last week in the alps and I had my center mounted step ups, and i can tell you just wow.

When i plowed trough that powder i just couldnt get my skis to float even tough it was steep, the snow was attleast up to my knees and my skis were just under, it was different, but still amazing. After a few runs, i just felt that i'd rather ski park now..

I don't think its too hard... and yes if you think skiing in powder is hard you likely do need to learn a few things.

However, I certainly PREFER to have my pow skis on a pow day. Nothing wrong with that.

Skinny park skis mounted dead center on a pow day is a crying shame vs. having EP Pros on your feet.

you just realize this now? Go to any decent size mountain especially on the east coast and watch how all the park skiers are. TErRIBLE outside of the park

Just saying there's no way you were ridiing two feet of fresh on a pow day; pow seems alot deeper than it actually is. Two feet can be a day of legends.

Man, where are you finding all these mountains with really awesome parks and really awesome pow on the east coast?

I feel like I'm missing out.

Yep, it's tons of fun man!

Okay so the thing was only like 8 feet once you landed, but I had no problems stomping it and riding away hot.

They floated fine too as long as you A) ski backseat, or B) are a real man and ski really fast and strong. This was like 2 years ago at whistler, I was on centre mounted volkl ledges (super soft) and they were a good 10cm too small.

my park skis are centre mounted and i can ski pow on them but i'd rather use something different. I dont have pow skis but i do have an all mountain non twin tip setup and they are waaaay better for pow than my park skis. I don't like the backseat bandit stance you have to take when skiing pow on a centre mounted ski.
