btw, light can have a VELOCITY of zero, but still have a SPEED of 3.00*10^8 m/s, so make sure you got the right terminology.

Of course when you look at a start you arent seeing back in time. You are just seeing what the star looked like how ever many lightyears away it is.

Also, faster than light travel is most likely not possible, and light speed is probably not possible. We could get close to the speed of light, but if we went any faster some weird things will happen. I cant remember exactly but I will find a link about it.

 
well you can't go as fast as light because as you approach light speed you (or you spaceship or whatever) actually becomes heavyer. because energy has mass (the whole E=MC squared equation) when you put energy into something like when you throw a baseball the baseball actually gains weight. (very very very little) but if you had to throw it the speed of light the energy needed to throw the ball would be greater. So as you approah the speed of light Everything gets heavyer and... slows down. So you need an infinite amount of energy to reach the speed of light, which is impossible. In theory if you went the speed of light you wouldn't appear motionless (unless you looked from behind because the light won't reach your back and bounce to your eye) because the light you're travelling through is bouncing off of you in all directions but you yourself would appear almost motionless your watch would tick much slower every atom of your body would slow down including your brain functions, you wouldn't age compared to everyone else. But to you your watch is ticking at a normal rate because everything has slowed. (that's the whole theory of relativity) Light is simply a material thing, if you went faster than light even though it's not possible then you'd just be going faster. Light would be bouncing off of you as you passed it, like a car going through the wind. (which would probably look fuckin cool)

This also brings up the fact that there is a difference between perception and reality. You may see those stars that but they may not exist today. If you're going faster than light or not you still exist in this time and space, weather I can see you or not.

I don't think you can say light can have zero velocity, because that means that either the light has no speed, or no direction. Light does have a constant speed, but not a constant velocity because it can change direction.

Ski instructor Mike I think you're on the right track but I think you're a little mistaken about things not being able to reach the speed of light. The speed of light is indirectly proportional to the mass and it's constant. And for enough energy to be available to reach the speed of light your energy has to increase along with the mass. Hence a VERY dense substance. This is exactly why light doesn't escape black holes (well actually it does somewhat in the form of radiation which is necessary due to the second law of thermodynamics). But I think Mike and I mean the same thing because technically the black hole isn't traveling but it just is do dense that it's gravitational acceleration is actually faster than the speed of light. If you want to get into quantum theory though light actually is emitted from a black hole in the form of radiation and is quantified as the horizon area of a black hole. For these particles to escape the black of hole they have to momentarily travel back in time.

 
Its funny to see that most of you guys are right... are you guys in college or something... and we must remember that we are making statements based on Einstein's theorys(which are fucking hard to understand with my grade ten education)and they are still theorys, even he stated that soem of his poionts could never be proven.

yeh sorry guys I meant constant speed ( 186 000 miles per second give or take)... plus yeh the fact that we gain mass and decrease in size as we go faster does make it impossible to travel the speed of light... In theory if somehting would be travelling at the speed of light, it would have infinite mass and it would require infinite energy to travel at that speed(or something like that) but it would have no physical size... fucking hard to understand I raed it in a book..I get most of Einstein's points but as they are theorys that require a high level of comprehension and education ( which I don't wholy have right now)

Velocity is not the same as SPEED!!!!! eg, a beam of light heads due north, its velocity west is ZERO!!!

And in space, u are almost completely weightless, its MASS, not weight. I know it seems like i m freakin out for no reason, but the thing is, all of my past physics teachers/profs forced on me this constant 'know ure units' crap.

And another thing, when u go faster(on earth), you 'appear' to be lighter, and it is true. Think of a car making a sudden deceleration(stopping), notice that the front of the car slightly is pushed down. because in that deceleration, it becomes heavier because the loss in speed.

but einstein theorized that if you go close to the speed of light, that time slows down, and that ure mass becomes greater and greater. That if you were at the speed of light, you would have a near infinite mass, and nothing, even in a vacuum could propel something with an infinite mass

Petek the car doesn't become heavier, the normal force from the shocks and tires of the car become less. This happens because the rotational motion of the wheels is decellerated. But the translational velocity of the parts of the car connected to the wheels doesn't decellerate at the same instant. So you still have parts of the car going forward and the the restoring force of the shocks makes the car come down because it's attatched to parts that have slowed down because its connected to the drive shaft, and the restoring force of the shocks is what pulls the car down. You feel heaver because when when you are decellerating there is a net force on your body in a direction (for all general purposes) perpendicular to your translational velocity. We are always under a constant net force based on atmospheric pressure but now that you have a mass that is decellerating (force = mass * accelleration) you feel a force which makes you feel like you're heavier (because your weight is the force due to gravity). You're not getting heavier you are just experiencing a larger net force, and the car sinks down because the springs exert a restoring force (F=-kx).

ya petek you're freakin out about nothing. I said heavyer so that it would be easily understandable (and I knew someone would say something about it) And generally when someone refers to velocity the direction that they are talking about is assumed to be the same direction as the movement, this ain't a lab.

And gravteck you obviously know a bit more about this than I do, I don't really know much about blackholes and etc. I've never really looked into it much.

in regards to the original post: that guy is a crackpot and his 'theory' holds no water. What he is talking about is 'frames of reference'. If you look at earth, it is said to be travelling through space at so many thousands of kilometeres per hour. fine. that uses earth relative to the universe. All he is proposing is that if you change the frame of reference to the center of the universe, wouldnt there have to be some planets or galaxies moving faster than the speed of light? The answer is no. light (photons) have no mass. anything with mass cant travel the speed of light. Thats why you will never travel at light speed, unless you could convert yourself to light, travel, then reconfigure yourself. good luck.

did you know the way most people think of what an atom is incorrect. there are no definite 'rings' in an atom the electrons are moving extremely rapidly all over the rings as they once were called are actually where the electron spends most of its 'time' its like the helicopter bladesand appears to be solid. also to note electrons are moving so fast they are pure energy and then could pass through the nucleus of the atom!

on another note if you want a humorous look at all this stuff read some douglass adams, the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy and all the books in that series are hilarious, made me laugh out loud while i was reading.

Lol some physics in highschool, I had physics in highschool, got a 700 on the physics SAT 2, and have been in physics courses in engineering school, chem, and thermodynamics courses.

First of all the theory of the light relativity has been proven. And time travel is possible. Austronaugts returning from the International Space station come back to earth a few millions of a second or so ahead in time. Imagine traveling very far away from earth for extended periods, you would come back to earth many many years in the future. Yet some circumstances in the universie could perhaps go back in time.

And light and time can be manipulated by lasers. Some scientist I saw said that by constructing a helix form of lasers you could send light into a slower spiral, thereby sending bits of information back in time. Theoretically when you would switch this device on, you would automatically begin to get messages from your future self.
