Thumb problems

i just fucked up my thumb at skiing the third time this season. the first two times it wasnt that bad, took about three days. this time its worse-everytime i take a hard bail i hurt my thumbs!

i know some guys that have same problems with their thumbs, do you guys have an idea how to prevent such injuries. prabably an ideao how to tape it or sth. like that!?

its called skiers thumb. and in its worser cases you can tear the ligaments in your thumbs. i did it to both of my thumbs in whistler this summer and i had to wear these gay brace thingys for a month but i only partially tore them. some people fully tear the ligament which requires surgery or you cant use your thumbs. and the easiest way to prevent it is to not wear your pole straps cause thats how the majority of cases happens. they land hard on theyre poles pushing the gap in between your thumb and your index finger into the pole strap and thats how it happens. id go see a doctor about it. the first couple times you probably only sprained your thumb but i bet you tore the ligament this time.

i never wear my pole straps... it happens landing stupid-i dont know how i do it!

does anybody know how to prevent such injuries?

you are probably putting your had down when you land backseat to save yourself from falling, correct? I did this a ton of times last year, and the pain can last a long time. The soreness went away in Aug, and the bad one happened in Jan. If you have full motion and just pain you can tape the crap out of your hand. If you have excessive pain, or limited motion, you need to see a doctor.

that is a lesson hard learned. At least you have to make sure you don't let your thumb back. I have definatly learned taking it like a man in those situations is the best stratagy. Usually the hand drop only save minor falls.

If you fall keep griping your pole dont let go or put your thumb off. If this is too hard then tape ur thumps to ur poles so u cant take them off. Then just walk around all day with your poles.

no dont do that. that could be really dangerous.

I always have problems with my thumbs. I usually sprain each one about 2-3 times a year. I accidentally stick my thumbs in the ground when I fall and they get pulled back. So its simmilar to your problem.

I wrap athletic tape around my hand and than around my thumb a few times so my thumb can not bend back or up. And make sure there is a slight bend in your thumb and than you can just wear your gloves over it. It has saved my life

yeah...was like a perfekt 810...because skis can hardly ride sideways you fly away and there is no way to not put your hands in front of yourself-thats just a reflex.

there must be a possibility to tape it to your hands or probably modifications of your gloves....

just tape your retarted hand hard core and take the pain like a man. Or go to your doctor and he will tell you not to ride for a month or two

hehe, my thumbs are fucked up too. I tried to save myself yesterday on a jump and jammed it. It's not to bad, but damn, I really should use a brace. My thumbs get hurt easy it sucks

i just jacked mine up this morning. went to nose butter a roller and double ejected out of the heels and just landed right on my hand. same thumb i hurt about a week ago. every stupid little fall for the rest of the season will aggrevate it again. thumbs suck.

Its cause when you fall your thumbs are getten all the impact cause they are wrapped around the pole they are not suppose to be bent that way I guess that shit always happens to me I have had 1 sprain a fracture and a broken figure this year lol

i fuck my thumb up almost everytime i go skiing. Usually one of the last hits of the day ill just go down quick and land on my thumb

wow, I thought I was doing something wrong to have my thumbs hurt every time I would fall, but apparently this seems to be a common occurrence. I might just stop using the straps, I'd rather hike a few feet to retrieve my poles than to have to deal with the pain for a few days.

learn how to drop your poles when you are falling...ive seen a few people do it. i broke my thumb like that speed checking a rail at night... haha so dont be like me. i had a cast for 6 weeks and still havent regained full strength in my thumb.

theres a thing that i used to use when i palyed catch in baseball cause i tore my ligament like twice, it doesnt really restrain movement either, u should look into it

I did that a few years ago, I fell on the point of my thumn into the ground. I felt like i was going to puke for a second and then it was ok for a little until i realized it swelled up to about triple the size at the bottom of the run. Couldn't move it for a couple weeks.

word skiers thumb... I get it alot its pretty annoying. Seasons barely started and i think im goong to lose my nail

i had this last year the sergery and everything and i taped it during football and it felt fine but i don't know if you would want to tape it for skiing not being able to hold the pole very easy or anything but its better than sergery and the doctors bill

putting your hands down is badnews, not only for your thumb but you can also hurt your shoulder, especially if your going pretty fast.

ha, thought I was the only one... my right thumb has been pretty jacked for a few days after eating it pretty good... luckily its startin' to feel better...

COOL! Your thumb hurts, its the most common ski injury there is now get over it and take it like a man its only a thumb, im skiing around everyday with a cracked rib and the muscles over the rib are pulled and 3 of the ribs have super bad bruising. Not to mention the fact that my knee is fucked up. Sorry i keep reading these pussy as threads, oh my thumb hurts what can i do, oh i broke my finger nail what should i do, omg the hair stylist made my hair not look emo enough what should i do!!

yes i messed up my thumb at a rail jam, i fell off on and caught my slef on the rail with my thumb, 5 weekes later is still hurts,i think i broke it or something but fuck casts

yeah its skiers thumb..it will be aggravated the rest of the season..i partially tore mine and it hurts until this day sometimes...but not bad...i went to the doctors and one said i needed surgery the following friday...well the thursday before it was healing so we cancelled the surgery and got a second opinion..bam only partially torn and a cast for 3 more weeks...saved me a lot of pain and down time...always get a second opinion

yeah i do that almost everytime i ski... it goes away in a couple days no big. learn how to fall without trying to stop ur fall with ur hands. usually it ends up with fucked up fingers or an arm break or shoulder seperation, hyperextension etc.

It happens to me also. The thing that sux is i am a catcher in baseball and it always gets injured when I catch for the fast pitchers. Ive had the problem for around 2 years now.

I know exactly what you mean the first time out this season i fucked up my thumb on a cbox going switch to 270 out. It all happens so fast to so its hard to find out what did it then i broke my ankle....

i dont understand how u do this, just dont slam your hands on the ground i dont find it that hard to keep my hands up. I never get fucked up thumbs.

i always mess up my thumb, one time, I fell and the muscle under my thumb swelled up and I could barely fit my glove on. i just keep on skiing and I usually forget about the pain, but it hurts later when your not doing anything. it healed on its own in a week. Anybody get this?

I landed backseat once and ran over my thumb with my skis...lucky the edges were dull but it still hurt like a bitch for a couple of days.

wow my thumbs never stop hurting when i go biking in the summer and do any drop over 6 feet i need to take a break because it still hurts from the ski season
