Thoughts on Vail buying Perisher

Just wanted to see what people had to say about this recent purchase from Vail. Most people seem to seem fairly negative about it.

I myself am waiting to see what it brings, can't say I am a fan of Vail closing in on the Australian market to make Perisher even more of a tourist trap than it already is though.

Perisher? Tourist trap? What tourist skis perisher? It's all local traffic

I'm talking about Weekend Warriors from Sydney,Canberra and the coast who only go up one or two days year, it is a bit of a trap in that respect.

um so do you expect every single person on the mountain to be living in jindy and skiing 5 days a week?

It's probably the best thing that could happen to Perisher.

Vail has money, and I think they will develop the elusive village that never happened.

It's awesome for Perisher season pass holders, we get to ski all over the place for free.

It will bring more people into the area, foreign tourists will help boost the local Jindy economy.

Finally i can buy one seasons (epic) pass with access to Nth america and perisher. Better then buying two seasons passes. Sounds like a good move for the Aussie snow scene

eh i am about sceptical about some of the points you guys bought up.

i doubt this will bring many foreigners. its shit compared to south america.

the village will be a struggle with the parks. if they build a village jindy will be hit hard. also we dont need more beds. the mountain is already nearing capacity. we need more terrain before we make more beds.

and realistically what are they going to put in the village? we cant have a nice village like whistler or vail. aussies dont spend that much.

i just hope the reorganize lifts for better placement. take away useless lifts. PV double into a quad. ditch the double and triple make it a high speed 6.

are your sources reliable? if you build it they will come. there were a hell of a lot of pros at perisher towards the end of the season last year which will undoubtedly create hype.

says who? believe it or not the average wage in australia is around the 75k mark and we have the 12th highest gdp on the planet. that means lots of disposable income and cunts with tonnes of cashola to blow on bringing shaz and the kids to the snow for the school holidays.

this deal was mainly to poach aussies that go to BC or japan and get them going to Vail Resorts.

Its difficult to articulate what i meant but a nice village on par with vail/whistler etc would mean the prices would be ridiculous. people arent going to pay thousands per night for australian skiing when they can stay in jindy.

even if they built an affordable village one of three things would happen. 1) village is successful, everyone stays there, jindy dies. 2) village is successful, people still stay in jindy, resort then becomes un-skiable due to too many people. 3) village isnt successful, they will pull money from other areas to pay for the loss.

think about it, we're already pretty much at maximum capacity. the runs are too short for the amount of people we have. they go up, ski down 2 mins later and join the lines. its not like overseas where they can catch 4 vertical lifts and then choose which level to ski down to.

look at smiggs. you can service that entire area with one chairlift with a good cat track and then a t bar for beginners off to the side where they currently are. but all that means is everyone is on the one lift and skis down 30 seconds later to join the line.

we need more terrain before we start building more beds. atleast thredbo has longer runs to keep people off the lifts. perisher its a max 30 second run anywhere before you have to get on a lift.

well ill take your word on most of that, haven't stayed in a ski village overseas before so i really cant comment on that note.

i for one welcome our new american overlords.

I would have thought they would do it the same as the Thredbo village. This deal will take a fair amount of skiers and snowboarders away from Thredbo, so the market for a semi-upmarket village would be there.
