Thoughts on the Subaru Outback

Killer ski car. Hatchback for room and skis, awd for snow, reasonably priced, reliable, what more could you ask for? Google them up, look for common problems that some years/models may have and search around for a deal.

solid car decent reliability good car for what it is ...... if your buying a new one don't get the 4 cylinder its slow as shit

these are wayyy cooler though.

But forreal, get one, you won't be disappointed, i love me a dope outback

outbacks are nice dude, they won't breakdown for no reason, they drive good in snow, and you can take them off road (within reason).

Since 90% of the kids on ns are biased and think subies are the greatest cars on the planet, the answers you'll get are going to be limited and almost always pro-subaru.

I personally hate subarus simply because of the way they look. You'd be hard-pressed to find one I actually like.

I'v got my temps and my family owns two subaru outbacks. I drive the older one and my mom drives the new one. We bought them for their dependability and all time four wheel drive and the cvt transmission. I love driving the 2011. Something about the engine braking in the 2013 I don't really like when coming to a stop and slowing down. Just my opinion though.

outback is probably the most economical suby, decent mpg (22-24 not really all that great but oh well), will run for just about forever after you replace the head gasket.

i have one and it's a beast in the snow, gets me to baker and back safely. and if youve ever driven the 542 on a pow day you know how crazy the road can get.

highly doubt that...

we have a 2001 so that might make a difference but ours gets between 20-25 depending if we have a rocket box on it.

My first car was a 2003 subaru outback that I bought used. It was a really good car and needed minimal work. Subaru's are notorious for having poor quality OEM exhaust systems so I did have to get mine replaced (kind of on the expensive side). 4 Wheel drive is awesome because you can take it almost anywhere especially if you get some good tires for it. I sold it to a friend after a couple years and he still drives it with no problems. Solid car!

I drive a Subaru outback with 240 on it runs like a charm, nothing a little tint and rear spoiler can't do to take away the dikyness

Subaru Outbacks ====== best thing since sliced bread. But for real i have a 2003 LL bean edition almost 156 thousand miles on it and still going strong. i got it from my grampa up in new hampshire and have beaten the hell out of it since i got it, nothing has gone wrong yet though and its made it through every off roading excursion ive taken it on. i wish it had a bit more clearance though, i mean 7 inches is a lot for a car but still a bit more would be good.

A jeep is going to break more frequently and cost a shit load more in gas. My vote is for outback.

That's because 90% of the people on NS are looking for an affordable, reliable car that can handle snow and carry gear. The hatchback WRX and Outback are exactly that.

insert sarcastic comment about the difference between AWD and 4WD.

but Subaru's Toyota's and Honda's run forever and are cheap to fix.

Honda crv. seriously suck a durable car. more clearance than a Suby and it has more trunk room. all I put in it is gas and occasionally new oil and it runs like a charm. any Honda owner knows that those cars just don't die.

subaru's are super reliable, they wont let you down. My legacy is at 180,000 and still runs great. Perfect ski bumb car

well uh no. jeeps have a terrible maintenance track record. very unreliable especially compared to the likes of them japs over at toyota and honda.

My family just purchased a new outback, it's super nice with all the bells and whistles. 3.6 ltr engine actually hauls ass and it has paddle shifters so it's pretty fun to drive

I dunno about that. Well, in comparison to the Jap products, perhaps. My '97 wrangler is still holding very strong with the only maintenance being oil changes as needed. Perhaps I have the lucky one.

3.6 litter in a Subaru Outback? my big ass Toyota 4runner only has a 3.4 L. That car must have insane pickup.

i have an epic subaru outback story.

back in like april or may or something i crashed my bmw 325xi and parked it in my garage to slowly buy parts to repair it (bmw parts are expensive and i am poor and in college)

in the meantime i bought a red 199something legacy outback for $900 and drove it for 14,000 miles in three months. when i purchased the car it had three different kinds of tires (they were all new though) scrapes and dents on every body panel and the interior and most of the trim was falling apart. the selling points were

"the radio mostly works and it has been recently inspected"

i did not change the oil. one day on my way to work i rear ended a pickup truck, crushed the radiator, smashed the rad support against the engine and belt pulleys, crushed the hood and left fender, shattered the battery and bent the fucking frame on the left side and broke the windsheild and DROVE the car to work (with no coolant in the engine) there i picked up some tools and showed off my fucked up ride to my fellow employees (i am a mechanic) and then i DROVE it to the junkyard down the street where i bought exactly $160 in parts off another outback, continued to drive the car down the street to a vacant lot with construction equipment parked in it. i used two 3500lb ratchet straps and a "borrowed" (stolen) steamroller to pull the front end of the car "straight" (straighter than it was after i hit the truck) after i got the front end straight enough i installed a new radiator, headlights, hood, fender, coolant expansion tank, battery, and some other odds and ends on the car (remember i was working with hand tools in a fucking parking lot) once i finished the car i started that peice of shit up and drove it back to the junkyard to drop off all the scrap i had pulled off the car (its worth money) then i drove the car (still with NO FUCKING COOLANT) back to work and poured a small amount of water in the radiator (i figured it would eventually start to like, overheat, or something) then later that day i drove the car to class.

i continued to drive the car, in its mostly wrecked state, for about 3000 more miles. i never did change the oil, although i did eventually pour some iced tea, a bottle of pepsi some guy gave me and some water into the cooling system to top it all the way off. i also drove the car 75+ miles daily, in mid summer, sometimes in stop and go traffic with no cooling fans to pull air through the radiator. i would turn on the heat to bring my engine temps down and it melted the fucking plastic around the vents in the car.

the only other maintanence i did to that car involved replacing a seized caliper, and the brake pads on just the front right of the car, after driving with the pads metal to metal for 700+ miles, i did not replace the brake rotor. also a few lug nuts fell off. so i put a few new ones on. and i removed the air filter housing and assembly because it rattled and that annoyed me. so for most of the time i drove that car it had no air filter. and two of my fender linings removed themselves. so did some door trim. also one day the oil pan developed a pretty serious leak because of a hole in the side of it, so i put JB weld over the hole.

also i got drunk and threw alot of empty glass containers at it, jumped it, drove it over lots of things at high speed and in general just ripped the fuck out of it.

in summary, the subaru outback, with its 14x,xxx miles, several accidents and only minimal, cheap maintancence was quite possibly the most resilient fucking car i have ever owned. it was cheap to fix, simple to repair, and very fucking difficult to kill. in fact, its not even dead. i just no longer needed the car anymore so i towed it through some mud and into my woods with a tractor so i dont have to look at its crooked fucking smile anymore. i could probably walk out there any day, throw a jump box on the battery and fire that peice of shit right up.

i highly recommend the subaru outback.

My parents bought a Subaru for me and my two older sisters to drive during high school. we're rolling around on its 8th year of teen driving 150k miles and she runs great. My friends hate the look and give me crap all day about it but they don't deny it out drives any of their cars in every condition. So it's a beautiful thing, but if you get one you've gotta be proud of it and rock the shit out of it!

yeah I have a buddy who just sold his 90 somethin Jeep because he was tired of paying for gas
