Thoughts on shorter skis?

I am 5' 10", 150 pounds, and I ride short skis. I was a little tight on cash for the past couple years, so I have been riding 161cm very old full camber Chronics. Last season I had enough money to pick up some new skis and I bought some 179cm Blizzard Peacemakers, which have tons of rocker. Now I'm in the market for some new park skis, and was looking at Surface Blanks. Since I'm so used to shorter skis, I was thinking I should get the 170s and not the 180s. Thoughts?

Heard bad things about the durability of the blanks but all depends on if you want fast turning or high speed stablility.

i made a similar thread just the other day re a pair im looking to buy. Having only skied on classic cambered skis the twin tip with rocker/camber/rocker profile really puzzles me in that i cant find (or figure out) what the effective edge is. My old skis were 1,75m and the effective edge was almost equal to the phisical edge (sans the rising tip)... with the rocker/camber/rocker im thinking maybe a longer ski would be required to give me the same effective edge but personally im still researching it. Good luck.

rockers insanely over rated unless your skiing out west / power / crud type snow. I wont give up blanks because they are one of the few solid solid twins that have full camber left on the market

I usually do groomers and powder which around the parts i ski most is mostly through wooded terrain. I haven't bought a new pair of skis in a almost a decade so im just getting up to speed with all the new tech. Care to ellaborate on those skis you mentioned? whats the maker and model, maybe a link somewhere? ty.

Not saying to go out and buy them obviously do the research.

I love my surface blanks. I have the park model. Mounted slightly back from center for all mtn skiing on the east cosat. I also have pow skis. They are super stiff and charge very hard. Hold and edge nice and are pretty quick given their size. I love normal cambered skis...than again I also have a race background. I find rocker so pointless on the east coast it just takes so much away from the effective edge on the hard pack. Rocker is nice but I only tihnk its useful on pow/crud days and west coast skiing

I honestly have no clue about either east coast or west coast skiing as im european ;)

...but i am looking for twin tip all mountain skis atm as my old carving skis are not particularly suited for off piste. Im currently looking at the salomon rocker2 100 but am open to suggestion... Also re the length i should go for on rockered skis (im 1,91m tall so around 6'3" and im heavy build).

i wouldn't overthink it too much. a general rule of thumb is start with a ski length that is your height (so at 5'10" the 179s sounded good), give or take a a few centimeters based on your skill, what type of ski it is, your preferences, characteristics of the ski like rocker and the mounting point, etc

so if youre looking at surface blanks, id def say the 180. theyre park skis, easy to control, probably have a pretty forward mount... im assuming youre a proficient skier so there's almost no upside to having the 170 for you.

also i think your last post mentioned some rocker2s or something? in that case def dont size down, that kind of ski isnt supposed to be small

I'm 6' 1" and I've got a pair of 181s and 171s i ride. super comfortable riding the 171s and the 181s are just bigger. I'd prob go with the 170s.

I mean if you want a solid stable ski get 180's also longer skis = Pussy

Gus K. Skis on short skis and look where it got him. Gay

im 5'10" and I have ridden 178 stingers that were custom stiffened. Before that (and after) I ski on APO Kai's from 2014 which are basically flat with rocker at the tip and tail in 177. The stingers were so solid on everything and I loved it except for the occasional gnarly edge catch that comes with full camber. I personally think that full camber is amazing and should be taken over rocker if you are unsure what you like since it is so reliable on every type of condition. That said, the APO's are my favorite ski that I have ever used and I would prefer them over anything despite basically no edge hold on ice. So camber is your friend and while the stingers felt HUGE when I first started skiing them (especially switch skiing) I got used to it and enjoyed the solid feel that camber brings.

On the issue of size, the other day I picked up some liberty Antigens in 184 for mad cheap and didnt even consider that they might be too big for me. I used them until they broke 3 days later and compared to the APO's they had so much more power and charginess and effective edge. This didn't cause any problems in any way and I actually really really liked it. If they weren't too stiff for my liking I would pick up more skis that size.
