Thoughts on Johnson state, Lyndon state, and Castleton state colleges

Wanted to know if anyone has/goes to any of these schools and their input on them in respect with academics and the skiing + if getting rides to mountains is difficult or not. Thanks if anyone can chyme in.

My roommates older brother just graduated from Castleton. Apparently that school blows. I'm pretty sure a few NSers go to Lyndon though. Just come to plymouth, when of the best ski schools in the east.

If you like living in the middle of nowhere, busted girls and getting an ok education go to 1 of 3. If you like suburb/small city living, honeys, and great education check out Champlain, UVM, St Mikes

haha dont go to any of those 3 , I go to Lyndon and it blows. The only good thing is Burke mtn is 15 minutes away, If you really just want to ski east coast and dont want to spend shit loads on college and want to live in the middle of fucking nowhere then maybe consider it but still be warned.... really if you want to ski you should check out some schools out west, University of Utah in Salt Lake or Montana State University in Bozeman are both sick and not a whole lot for out of state when compared to other schools. If you want to get real wild you can even get residency after a year and pay like next to nothing for instate tuition.

hey thanks man, I took out all three of those schools from my choices. I applied to Utah State University and I'm planning on applying to plymouth state in newhampshire.

Ive applied to UofU, UNH and ive already been accepted to Montana State(relatively cheap out of state tuition compared to other school and 20 minutes to the closest mount)

I spent my freshman year at Johnson State. It wasn't unbearable but it was pretty shitty. Busted ass girls, The food is terrible, zero parties and the tuition there (depending on your major) is a joke. Pretty much the only upsides to it was skiing everyday.

My Advice: Steer clear.

Go to St. Mikes. Burlington is nice and you get free busing and a $60 season pass for Smuggs. It also easy to find rides to other mountains.

Threads, visited UVM, Champlain, and St. Mikes a couple weeks ago, interested in hearing about other schools in the area

I LOOOOVED Castleton, we had a backyard park, we had railjams with LSC (Johnson never showed up lol), I shredded KTown all the time and its within easy access of a bunch of other mountains, NYC, Boston, Montreal

I made sooo many good friends that are now all over the States, most Castelton Ski Team alumni are full time ski bums (3 of us worked for MHSSC and at least 5 now reside in CO, and thats just the race team). A lot of really good skiers and snowboarders from the ice coast start out there and then spread their wings and move out west as they get older. For me personally I grew up in the same house down the street from the only ski area in RI for 18yrs, so I wasn't gonna leave New England for college. Now I've moved back and forth around the country wayyyy too many times haha.

The education is really on the upswing, I say the school I got accepted to is different from the school I graduated from because they did a bunch of construction and additions (like an awesome athletic center) and when I got accepted it was the first class that people got turned down haha (I'm not stupid I literally wanted to keep ski racing for a while, I got an early acceptance to UVM but I'm not that good at racing. And before you call racing dumb remember thats where the $$ is) From what I hear it's actually kind of hard to get in now. It's earned the nickname "mini middlebury" or something.

They're trying to look all fancy, but don't be fooled, it's a party school.

LSC is good for ski area management, my ex earned his degree there and runs the park at Burke, and some of his friends with that degree also work at Burke, and all over the states at major resorts. I actually grew up skiing at Burke, our family has a house up there and I was on skis at age 2 so I'm very familiar with the area. Lyndon hosted the VSC Throwdown rail jams up there, really fun time to get together. Also a party school. More of the "local" vibe in the ski community, since Burke is smaller and less popular than Killington. Basically no liftlines at Burke which is awesomeee, really good tree skiing, and while they don't have the same money and manpower as Killington does to build a park and change it around all the time, it's the perfect lap park.

Oh yeah I meant to include this, it's Team Castleton holding up our prize for wining the Throwdown in 2010. Ski and snowboard slopestyle (I said rail jam earlier, I meant slopestyle the whole time haha. Though in 2009 the Packing House bar hosted a rail jam at night after the Throwdown)671795.jpeg

oh one more thing, my girl Brynn and I may look like "busted ass girls" in this picture after getting all sweaty n shit winning a competition, but believe me, we're fucking gorgeous.

what year is that? is that red building at the bottom of the poma, above mid-Burke?? i havent been since 2010.... i'll be up there this season forsureee. I think I recognize the pits haha

this was last weekend, and yeah, the rail's in my yard, and the jump and pvc are right above mid burke. are you from the ville?

I agree with your first sentence, its dead on. but your advice is retarded. OP mentioned 3 state schools with moderate tuition costs and you suggested 3 of the most expensive schools in the northeast.

UVM is the highest out of state tuition in the nation im pretty sure, and champlain is only a few grand less.

^^^ another huge factor in my decision was cost. Castleton's tuition actually went up while I was there cuz of all the new stuff, but still way cheaper than all those other VT school and universities being mentioned (as their tuitions are going up also). I lived off campus to save money after freshman year, I lived in the shittiest freshman dorm for a year and it was still decent. Its not a big deal in the long run. I'm pretty sure CSC is the most expensive out of the 3 VSC schools though.

but hey if you can afford a really prestigious school and get in and use it to establish a career, and that's what you want, then go for it. I have never used my degree to earn money, though I did acquire a great deal of knowledge, and my minor in coaching turned out to be pure gold. i got shit done at CSC but I also had fun, skiied n made connections, and now I make a comfortable living coaching and working in the ski industry.

yeah I know most of those guys, anyone there before 2010 at least. I'm not from the ville but i grew up skiing at a family house in e.burke, and I dated someone there while i went to csc so I partied and skiied there a lot too. shitty 2.5hr drive but thats love. got to ride around in groomers n stuff. one new years we brought the xmas tree up to the park and set it on fire in a gap n jumped it, and my rottweiler followed someone off a 30ft booter n knuckled wicked hard. always shenanigans.

I graduated from LSC. Place was alright. Pretty good if you wanna ski since there are a bunch of mountains real close (Burke is 10 mins, Jay is 40, Loon is an hour, Waterville 1:15 etc.)

Do any of you know if it's hard to get into Montana state university?? Only reason is because some of you said go out west and put that down for an option and I've been looking there but don't know how easy it is to get in there.

Yoooo if this is still an option go to Castleton, I just graduated and I'm staying in the area for the skiing until I can afford to move out to park city. Killington is dope, and the new college pass gets you Killington, poco, okemo, and sunapee for like 300 or 400. Easy education with tons of shredders always looking to go to the mountain daily. Also a park on campus an a decent ski am snowboard club

I made it a semester at Lyndon and had to transfer. that place is just a dead end. Seriously so many people start there and never end up graduating. I also imagine you are looking at the mountain rec/ ski resort management programs and all I can say is don't pidgin hole yourself. You will learn way more at a real college and interning at local resorts. And I do mean to imply Lyndon isn't a real college.

*I will say I met some of my best friends there but they for the most part have transferred themselves too.

what do you guys think of green mountain?

Green mountain is lame. LSC is the best of the three. I'm board excuse I went there, but also because it is. You can live right on Burke mountain, you're within an hour of jay and a bunch of other good stuff and the parks are on point.

Plus the rec program is awesome and works well with the mountain.

Hit me up if you want details. Was a terrific school, and I got a good education.

Plus skied a shitttttton
