Thinking about joining track.

Ok so im a senior in high school and the only sport ive ever played for the school is wrestling. But in wrestling we run for 16 minutes straight and thats our warm up. I really want to do another sport before the end of the year and at my school we only have either baseball/soccer/track during the spring. I can jump 10'10". And can touch rim on the on a basketball hoop. Also i can run practically as long as i want, i dont get tired. But my 20 yard dash is only 3 seconds flat..so im not that fast. I was wondering if somebody could give me some info about track because i practically know nothing. And recommend something i may be good at.

I decided to do track senior year after playing soccer all four years (my high school played soccer in the fall). I knew I wasn't going to dominate in anything, but have always had good stamina from playing soccer my whole life so I decided to do distance. Ended up switching off between doing the 800 and the mile at meets and finished middle of the pack in the beginning of the season, and by the end of the season I was starting to place in races.
I did track more for the social aspect, but I'm also a competitive person so I forced myself to work hard because it really annoyed me finishing middle of the pack in the beginning of the season. But distance is fun because while you do do some hard training exercises you also have those days where you go for a "town run" type of thing and get to socialize with your friends during the run.

fuck off. wrestling is the hardest sport that you can possibly do. Football players come to the first practice of the season and are puking and have to sit out. No other sport is as demanding as wrestling. so dont talk shit about something you know nothing about.

lol.
but i run 110 hurdles and 400 hurdles and the workouts aren't usually too bad. plus you will be able to three step (take less steps between each hurdle) because you can jump high, giving you an advantage. so i would recommend hurdles and high jump. hurdles takes the most skill out of all events imo.

pole vault bro!

it might be hard to pickup well in one year since you're a senior. but it'll be sooo fun.

I pole vaulted it was a blast!

plus I have my high school pole vault record 7 years running!

I hold a school title for Cross country /claim.

Field events are pretty gay. A lot of waiting and not that much hype. The 100 meter dash is sick if you're good. But if you want to have a good time if you run spring track, run the 400 or 800..

Then it must be the lineman.

Our team is conditioned to the point where every one of us can play both ways in a 60 minute game. Maybe that's atypical, I dunno.

i betcha i could go to one of your wrestling practices and be perfectly fine and i dont wrestle, just my .02

i fucked my knees doing track and X-C if u have even minor knee probs, take it easy out there, luckily my knee cured itself after X-c so im good for skiing this year.

sparknotes: watch out for ur knees

No, i dont know my vertical so i just measured my jump height, i can touch up to 10 foot 10 inches. i have no idea what my long jump is. But im not scared im just trying to get some feedback into what activity? *If thats what you call them?* that i should join.

pretty sure there's only one event longer than one mile.

and if you're into running distance do it on the cross country team way more interesting I hear

damn that's crazy!

we only has the one and the two mile. I'm pretty sure there was a 3200 in the decathlons though. it's almost been 10 years for me.

quad post. my opinion of the 32 is that its kinda meh. i just get bored racing 8 laps but thats imo. im more of a mile kinda guy

YES DO IT! Im a freshman and already running 4:40miles and one of the best freshman in the state. No biggie or anything. lolol

this is terrible advice

just lose the shoes man, more cushioning, more support just leads to worse form and more injuries

also, track is awesome, the 200m is my favorite race, but im a long distance kid still

400 is good also.

i'll be honest im pretty darn fast, like id be in a speedsuit if i did sprints, but the coach is a dick so i just chill and do shitty in the mile haha

track is definitely all about being social though

pole vault was my other source of adrenaline than skiing in high school, falling from 14 feet is pretty awesome and if you get good teammates it can be a blast. Also ran the 100 and 4x1, which were pretty fun as well.. id say go for it

i did track in high school but i didn't really try, put more effort in soccer for my city. did it mainly for the social aspects and the views (hot chicks in spandex shorts) pretty much i would run the 100,200,400 and relays and get 2 days of school and just walk around all day just taking in the sights and chillin with friends.

i only got to do that though cause my coaches knew i would still train and compete at a relatively high level

i'm sorry but that isn't correct.

look into barefoot running a bit, heel striking isnt natural, you can only heel strike in modern trainers.

people have been running for millions of years unshod, running is why we surpassed the neanderthals.

Actually, the mile and the 3200 were my main races and I was pretty good at them. It sucked though, but my mom put pressure on me to run since she is helping to pay for college, and I felt entitled to help my team. It was definitely not fun though. The worst part of my day was not going to school, but staying after school for 2.5 to 3 hours to run through boring suburban neighborhoods and get yelled at during pointless warmups in 90 degree weather because Im not wearing a sweatshirt and sweatpants.

Wrestling is dope.
A lot of my friends wrestle. So fuck the haters.
If you're looking at doing track, and have a lot of stamina, think about distance running.

I also did track in highschool for 4 years. I ran all the hurdles except the highs (i'm too damn short). If youre a tall lanky kid you should do pretty well. Your speed will improve when you get good running form down.

Oh and 400m Hurdles is for real men.

Not to be that guy but....

The actual reason we surpassed neanderthals was a complete lack of respect for those around us. We had no qualms killing each the neanderthals..but they had problems killing us.

He must have crazy hops then. I'm 5'6" and ran one or two high hurdle races and was scared shitless in all of them. It definately wasnt for me.

400 hurdles is where its at though, after running that you feel such a huge sense of accomplishment/are fatigued as hell haha.

no, i know plenty about barefoot running. If your parents were indians or africans and generations upon generations before you have been running barefoot you'll be fine. but if you're parents are typical white suburban jabroni's then you'll be fucked and injured all the time. Unless you gradually (month by month) get lesser and lesser support until your feet are used to barefoot you'll be fucked. That would take several months (5-6-7ish) and in this kids case thats just stupid considering he's considering track for 1 season and prolly nothing more.

i know barefoot isnt natural but generations have left us with having to run w/ lots of support

If you do them you're pretty much guaranteed to eat shit a few times regardless, I sure as hell did and still do lol. It's similar to skiing in that aspect, it's part of learning. But once you get around that it's a blast.

evidence suggests that neanderthals had difficulty getting food after the ice age.

homo sapiens can run down an antelope, neanderthals could not.

they followed the herds of things they could hunt (mammoth) right into extinction.

for all intents and purposes, if neanderthals could run wed be sunk, they were stronger and smarter than us, but they couldnt adapt to a changing climate.

heel striking didnt really begin until the early 70's, i wouldnt call that generations.

my dads old running shoes from 69-73 pretty much didnt have a cushioned heel.

Bill Bowerman brought about the idea of longer "more efficient" heel striking strides in 1969 (i think) and then his first Nikes to be a succes came out in 1972. i believe, these dates might be off by a couple ears give or take.
