The You Are Not Alone Concussion Thread

Have you suffered a concussion (skiing or otherwise) and felt withdrawn, alone, and mentally cloudy for longer than it took for the concussion to "heal?" YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

I suffered a TBI skiing in 2015 and didn't feel like myself until over 2 years later. To this day I wear glasses and have an eye disorder from my head injury. I lost many friends because I wasn't myself and became depressed for a period of time because I felt like I had no one to lean on. Despite not being expected to graduate HS, I now attend Montana State University as a Presidential Scholar studying Neuroscience. I've rewritten the ImPACT test and am a researcher in the Repine Laboratory at CU Medical School studying concussions in rats. I intend to go to medical school to become a concussion rehabilitationist.

I'm posting this because we need to lean on each other more and that starts with telling your story and realizing you are not alone. Please feel free to share your concussion stories below and leave a positive comment on others stories.

Spread love today.

I'm no stranger to concussions. I've had 5 documented concussions in my 16 years, none from skiing. The latest and most severe being on October 30th of this year. Was popping a wheelie on my dirt bike at about 45-50 mph, and fell hard. Was out of school for a month and work for two. Still don't feel completely myself and it's horrible. Not sure why. I still am skiing all the time and sending it, but just can't put my finger on why I feel weird.

Head injuries are bad mmkay

Being the test dummy for park features for so many years has not been kind to my body. I know you can relate. I've definitely had head injuries over the years but nothing ever really documented. I put my knee in to my chin YEARS ago testing a jump for one of our big air events and cracked a good amount of my teeth. That definitely rocked the dome pretty good.

definitely know how you feel. for me it was almost like i was living in a mental “cloud/fog” that kinda distanced me from my body. some days i felt like i was watching myself make decisions, pretty odd

This. smashed my knee on my chin on thursday and bit all the way through my lip. luckily my teeth are intact and i didn’t get a concussion this time around. lesson learned: don’t forget a mouth guard on the deepest day of the year

Hey good for you man:)

also awesome that your spreading your story to give others hope after injuries such as this one!

I’ve been knocked unconscious several times; once I was out for few minutes supposedly. Thankfully I didn’t receive a concussion any of those times; at least none that I was aware of.

They didn't used to have concussions back in the day. Just dingers. But if you got knocked the fuck out then it was a heck of a dinger.

Vibes op. Growing up is weird and in my case you never know how much is just weirdness or if something is up because of all those dingers. Gotta just keep on trucking though.

Thanks for saying all of this, I really hope that you and others in your feild are successful in finding a cure for some of the damages that TBIs leave.

I’ve had several concussions and have a big issue with short term memory loss. Would be such a blessing to remember the everyday stuff again.

Good luck to you:) Thanks for sharing, I feel like a freak sometimes when I forget things that happened 10 minutes ago... good to know I’m not the only one with this type of stuff.

Hi friends, I feel like most of you (or maybe some of you??) know my story. TBI at the age of 17, turned 18 later that year. Relearned how to walk, read, write, literally everything again-- all during the year when I had to take my ACT and go into my final year of high school. Life was pretty fucking rough for me, started Montana State ~ a year 1/2ish after the injury. Ended up getting kicked out a few time, had some more concussions. Graduated thanks to accommodations.

Never fully recovered but able to live my life now.

Happy to expand if anyone needs some tips etc.

Any updates on your recovery / studies at this point so far ?? Any cool breakthroughs? Love that you chose to study neuroscience after your TBI I respect that

was just reading some articles about how exercise may actually be beneficial to recovery instead of just laying in a dark room for weeks. Interesting to see how the recovery approach may be changing now that they’re researching TBIs more

Like a ski scrub I cased on Mountain High's "big" kicker in February of 2021 which resulted in me giving myself a double dead-arm from the big booty boost buckle and later back/spine soreness but thankfully wasn't too concussed. Early March this year at Bogus Basin my Chronics got its inside edge dented in and ultimately tore off not long after so I snagged a pair of Revolt 95s. Unaccustomed to the new skis, like a shit head I went shrub hopping off the sides of the run and still sus with the snow stick's pop, my binding brake grabbed hold of a lil homie from not being hip enough and cucked me mid air like a milf from Bel Air. One ski dug in and slung me face first near some young thug ferns which I nearly French kissed but thankfully I ducked dat shiz and went straight for some good ol white powder. I didn't have a line, it was a whole bowl. In utter shock of my trajectory and my relatively uncompromised condition, I sat a stared off alone, like a good idiot. Head felt woozy the following days and yet the only thing that was discerning to me at first was my knee. Only have had 1 concussion so far and that was from senior year of HS. My best friend has a horrendous concussion record from being such a fine filthy animal out there so I can't imagine being that badass

what am I reading

Knocked my self out on Saturday at Copper. Don't remember how I crashed at all. I remember my whole run through the jump line but have no memory of the rails. I just woke up with my face down on the snow, so out of it. I look up and see this girl I go to school with just looking at me, put my face back down, then look up to see my friends. A snowboarder said that I am super lucky but was so out of it I didn't really comprehend or ask questions. I asked down to ski patrol. I gave my friend my keys laid down. My concussion isn't that bad just it was my 8th, and second in 4 months so the effects were bad. When I was in the clinic I heard alot of yelling and screaming out in the reception. It turns out my friends got kicked out of the clinic and had to sit out side. This was super funny to me for some reason. My memory from that whole day is extremely foggy. I don't remember what is a dream, what is made up in my head, and what is real. I cracked my helmet badly. I hit the side of my head I guess from the cuts on my face. I guess I must have hit my ear because when I got home, my ear started to bother me. It got worse and worse until 1 in the morning were I couldn't focus on anything or sleep because the pain was so bad. I went to the ER because head injures are no joke and I wanted to get looked at. After being horrible pain for a few hours the doctor finally met with me. The hospital was empty, I don't know why it took 2 hours to see me. They took a ct scan, took another 2 hours before talking to me again, and then said they don't know what is wrong and handed me tylonal. I was pissed. The pain in mostly gone but I still can't use head phones in that ear. I was so hyped on this year. So bummed it came to an end a bit early but not trying to get any brain damage so not risking anything for a couple months.

Yeah! i graduated with an honors degree in cell bio and neuroscience and spent 3 years interning at CU medical school in a concussion research lab.

Mine really cool breakthrough that our lab was helping work on was a breath detector for TBIs. sorta like an inhaler but you exhale into a device and it can tell you with relatively good accuracy if you have a concussion. should be useful for EMTs, trainers, athletes, etc. a consumer version of the tech is still probably 5-10 years out.

some research i conducted at that lab is also supposed to move to clinical trials next year. i found, in rats at least, a stat is ally significant pattern of females being more prone to more severe concussion symptoms, but also showing increased rates of healing in brain tissue when compared to male rats. we will see if this holds true in humans in about a decade when the human study is complete!

This whole thread reads like one of those advertisements for lawsuits against a medical company. “Got a concussion in the summer of 1987? You may be entitled to compensation.” Anyways hope you get better buddy I barely read anything you have to say.

Not in my case— it’s never been quite the same. It’s good but it’ll never be as good as it once was.

Not for me. It’s 100 times better than my last major head hit. But oh boy it’s awful compared to normal people

I have definitely had them in football and wrestling. Throw in a bit of boxing in there too. We called it getting your bell rung. I can think of twice in the last year or so skiing where I’ve hit my head and probably gotten a concussion. I really need to follow up after those but it’s so hardwired to try to just brush it off. Which is major bad news.

On my 18th birthday, I was driving my car with my 15yo brother in the passenger seat. Some dipshit old fuck on an oxygen tank ran a red light and T-boned us with his jacked-up pickup truck. It completely totaled my car. I broke my wrist in the accident. My little bro got whiplash and the airbag slammed his head against the headrest. He was bleeding out of his nose and was dazed and in shock. The EMT told me that if we got hit a tenth of a second earlier, it would've killed me.

The ambulance took us to the ER. They asked my bro to recite his ABCs, and he kept fucking up. He couldn't get through them. For some insane reason, the ER staff decided not to give him concussion protocol and discharged us from the hospital after putting me in a cast. Two weeks later, he was still cloudy and was diagnosed with a TBI.

It's been almost 7 years since then, and he just graduated from engineering school and landed a really cool new job. I'm happy for the success he's found. But it's been a journey. He lost friends, his personality changed a lot, was suicidal for a few years, and he suffers from debilitating migraines on a daily basis. He can't be outside without a hat and pitch-black sunglasses. I know it was a freak accident, but I still feel guilty for not paying close enough attention in the car that night. Maybe I could've seen that guy coming.

Hang in there, guys. Protect your head. Brain injuries can make your life very different very quickly.

I dosed a bit of molly a couple of days ago while I had a minor concussion. I have fairly bad de-realization rn and am wondering if this will go away or if there is anything I can do to help it go away

how much mdma did you eat? Very good chance that if you ate a high dose that it's just the mdma comedown, and you'll feel much better in a few days/week

I used to abuse the fuck out of mdma. The amount you do is directly proportional to how long you feel crummy afterwards. One time I gave myself a 2 week long hangover by doing a truly irresponsible amount.

You can also try taking 5-htp for a week. It is the precursor to serotonin, it will help your brain regenerate the serotonin that is devoid of after mdma. I take it for a week after every time I use mdma

Also by the way, if you are taking mdma more than once every 3 months or so, you re significantly increasing the likelihood of having a bad comedown/hangover. This is because that's about how long it takes for the brain to fully regenerate all the serotonin you dumped when you rolled. If you use again sooner than this, not only will you fail to get the full effects, but you will also be damaging the serotonin receptors and axons in your brain.

You should also aim to do no more than your initial dose + 1 redose in any given use. If you do multiple redoses the comedown will get exponentially worse.

MDMA is still my favorite drug, but it must be respected because it can fuck your brain up way faster than any drugs. Stay safe, if ya have anymore questions my PM is always open

Some people say meditation helps with de-realization. While you wait out your come down, this might improve your well being and the situation overall.

It’s a been about a week and I feel better now. I usually dose more than what I took so I think the prior brain injury made the come down last longer/worse. If you have a brain injury just smoke, don’t do phycadelics

Yes I do respect the fuck out of all “hard” drugs. It had been 4 months and 2 weeks since I last dosed. I just wasn’t thinking about my concussion until the day after
