The X-games, Simon Dumont and the new big hit X-games event.

Wow, I cant believe some of you who are hating on the x games, simon dumont and the big hit competition, Seriously.
I will admit that EVERYONE is entitled to their own opinion, so if thats your opinion then so be it. However, most of the people in that thread are coming off in the way that they are just going along with what other people have said so they won't get their karma lowered or they might be able to get someone to quote them with a "haha +K".
What is with all the hate on the X-games lately? I remember back in the day when the X-games used to be THE event that everyone would wait for, it was the most looked up to competition ever, in all sports classified as "Extreme". I remember reading quotes of pro skiers in old magazines stating that they would rather be apart of the X-games then the Olympics. The X-games has progressed our sport so much and most people don't even know it. My guess is that all of the people hating on the X-games are new to the sport and have only seen the most recent X-games. The reason that the most recent X-games don't seem to have the same effect as some of the earlier years of the X-games is because now instead of waiting a whole year to see the next big thing, you can see that "new trick" the night someone was learning it with edits. The X-games have brought more then a two handfuls of new tricks to the table, JF Cusson landing a switch 7, Not just bringing amplitude in half pipe to skiing to a new level, but bringing amplitude in the half pipe in snowboarding to a new level. Although the Slope style course may have been a little dangerous as you guys say, thats not the X-games committee's fault, they were not the ones who built it, Snow Park Technologies was in charge of designing it. To add to that fact, the X-games is an elite competition, it's supposed to be the best of the best. if you are good enough to make it there you should probably be able to take on any course that's in front of you. It's those who overcame it and continued with their run to the best of their ability that deserved the win. I mean when Tanner Hall broke his ankles on Chad's Gap did you think to your self "Oh thats dangerous they should have set it up better?" No, obviously it's meant for people who are good at skiing and can assume the risks. If you cant assume the risks and accept that you may just break your ankles on a jump, you my friend should not be hitting the jump. So what about the text voting, I am hugely not a fan of it but hey, they tried it one year, it didn't work. Everyone makes mistakes.
This hate on Simon Dumont really needs to stop. Are you guys seriously hating on him for being good at something? Everyone is SO quick to call him out on everything bad he does, but when it comes to something he's good at you guys call him out for that too? Give him a break. I bet you if you asked half of the people in that thread why they are hating on him for, they would reply "I don't know". Just because he could dominate the pipe scene because he focused on that aspect of skiing doesn't mean he sucks at skiing, he did win a fair amount of Big Air and Slope Style competitions when got his big break. He was really popular when he broke on to the ski scene and had his first appearances in ski movies. He was always that Young kid who was really good. How many people hate on Tanner Hall? Almost no one. Well in fact when he first started to compete pipe, he sucked at it. Everyone laughed at him and made fun of him, but he worked hard at it and came back and look at how far he made it in pipe skiing, but when was the last time he won a Slope Style or Big Air competition? This is my point, there are no skiers out there who can be/ are the best in all aspects of skiing. Yeah, Tom Wallisch is good at Rails and Jumps, but you put him beside the Simon in the pipe, or Tanner in the back country he is going to get destroyed. In response to Tinga's Hats about your comment "anyone else remember back when simon was going for the record and they made colby stop hitting the jump because he was getting close with simon in the warm up hits????????????". Well I will answer your question with another question. Do you remember when Jon Olsson switch Misty 9'd Chads Gap on the same day that Tanner Hall switch cork 9'd Chads Gap and broke his ankles and the footage was never released in a movie because they didn't want to take away from the drama of Tanner's crash? Now I am not trying to hate on Tanner at all by using him as an example, my point is yeah there was hate, but people got over it. This hate with Simon has seriously just been taken to extraordinary levels for no reason. Simon Dumont hate has gone on too long. We get it. You can move on.
As for the "Superpipe High Air" event. I think it's cool. This is no brand new event to skiing, as mentioned by a few people, the Super hit competition has been in WSI and other competitions. I don't believe there has been any serious injuries in the competition ever, but if they should have happened to anyone it would be Scott Hibbert, Mind you he is still here today. Yes it is possible to blow out your knees and get seriously hurt, But where in skiing is it not possible to do that? Even on Jon's perfectly sculpted features that were designed to be safe you can blow out your knee as shown by PK Hunder in the last JOSS. I have never seen anyone hate on the "King of Quarters" competition. Also the 6 people they choose to be in the High Air competition have rights. They have obviously picked the 6 people already and have discussed the competition with them. Even if they haven't picked the 6 people yet, they do have rights and they can refuse to participate in the event should they feel it be unsafe.
All in all, I am getting tired of the same old, same old. This may be a bit long but I encourage people to read it and reply. Arguments are welcome.

I must say I did not read your entire post, just merely skimmed it. But here's how I see it: Tanner vs. Simon was a huge publicity thing for the X-games. They played that shit up so much, and it must have gotten viewers from outside the ski community because they kept doing it every year. Now, Tanner is out. Last year, Simon proved to be one of the most popular skiers in America in the text-to-win best trick competition. So, what can be done to draw more viewers? (more Simon fans I might add) Let's think about it. Who goes the biggest in the pipe? Dumont. So, a big air competition caters directly to ESPN's needs. By creating an event for Dumont (so it seems) they will probably get more viewers, and they will be able to build a lot of hype around this event.
Besides, probably not many people outside the ski community know the names of Kevin Rolland, David Wise, Justin Dorey, Xavier Bertoni (even though he won last year), etc. There really isn't much they can say about half pipe compared to years past, at least not much that will get the public's attention. So, if they hype Dumont up for half pipe and big air, they might have as much hype as years past. It seems to me to be a huge publicity stunt.

I think most people are hating on Dumont because he sort of jocked out with skiing. He decided to treat it like a sport and focus on winning stuff. Now he can live more than comfortably from it though, so props for that.
I guess being a competition skier isn't as "cool" as being a skier that focuses on filming more.

I can definitely see where you are going with that, but at the same time you have to take into account "How many people actually know who Jon Olsson is?" Hardly anyone since he hardly even does X-games anymore. Everyone is going to vote for the person that they know (Simon Dumont) over some Swedish guy who they have no idea how he even got to be in the competition. Same thing happened with Travis Rice and Torstein Horgmo. In my opinion, if the battle was between Tanner Hall and Simon Dumont, it would not have been a popularity contest. It would have come down who had the best trick, and Simon probably still would have one because he had the crowd pleaser. It's not just because his popularity, his trick was a crowd pleaser. I had some one in my school come up to me with a video of freestyle.ch and ask me if I could do a "Superman Double Front flip" because they thought it was the coolest trick ever, and when a double cork 12 was the next trick the thought nothing of it. This got me curious so i asked them if they had ever heard of Simon Dumont and they said no. This person is a basketball player and doesn't know anything about skiing or boarding until I told him to look up skiing in podcasts.
I do believe that this event is a marketing strategy but in a different way then you stated that doesn't involve them using Simon Dumont. You have to realize that any time you slap a 'NEW" sticker on something its going to catch peoples attention. So the X-games committee probably thought to them selves "how can we make a fresh new event? What else is there in skiing that we could bring to the table? Moguls? Aerials? Rail jam? Super Hit?" and then they narrowed it down. "How can we maximize profits by using what we already have? Moguls and Aerials requires more money to build a course. Rail Jam involves building a course. Oh! We can just use the half pipe we already have built for a Super Hit competition!"
Also, just wondering but can you explain to me how EXPN using Simon to get higher ratings is Simons fault? He is getting no money out of it. So how is he to blame?

for my 1000th post i will say, i agree. People dont even know why they hate on simon. He is a dope skier, has been since he broke out. Im drunk as fuck rite now and i will say, stupid motherfucks that hate on dumont are fucker retarded. How can you hate on someone that is pushing the sport like him. so what if its mainly pipe. I will say i used to think he was only in it for the money blah blah blah. But i have matured and figured out that he is a fucking skier. he loves skiing. he kicks ass at skiing. And even on rails, i think he still is looken pretty fucken good on them.

You fucken idiots that hate on him need to get over it. You are probably 14 and are just going off what peoples ay. Simon is nowhere near my favorite skier, but he still throws down like a fucken G. If your hating on talent such as his, you have no reason to be on this website or even be around skiing and i hate you. ya FUCK YOU HATERS. FUCK OFF little bitch ass kids who dont know shit about simon or the sport.

my thoughts are that you wasted a lot your time ranting about the dumbest shit ever. hate happens, but the skill always prevails. stop being a bleeding vag over it. with the growth comes hate and more so, popularity. grow up you little bitch. its natural.

I'm not sure what you are referencing with the Jon Olsson comment. The fact that everyone voted for Dumont over Olsson just proves that Dumont is one of, if not the most, popular skier in America. So, building an event around him would be ideal financially. Also, I agree, the Travis/Torstein show was equally as disappointing as the Dumont/Olsson show.
I do agree with your points about the "NEW" factor and the fact that they are using what is already in existence (the half pipe). Also, I don't think you mentioned the crowd pleaser factor, but that would be huge with a big air. At the same time, I think it would be a bold statement to say that this event was created without the thought of Dumont's popularity in mind. I still stand behind my first statement in that this event seems like it was made for Dumont, and he will probably be hyped up really big for it. (I should note that from a business standpoint all this points do seem quite logical. It's just that this situation isn't appealing to the core skiers).
Lastly, I can't explain how EXPN using Simon to get higher ratings is Simon's fault. I don't know why he is being blamed. I am certainly not on that train, and I don't think I ever was. I'm not sure where all this Simon hate originates from, but hopefully that question was directed at the general public, not myself.
Lastly lastly, do you KNOW he's not getting money out of it? just sayin...

Jon fell on chads, and didn't want it released. If he landed that footage would be legendary. Like tanners.

you really should work on your writing/arguing skills. I genuinely feel dumber from reading your post. Not trying to be a dick, but it's the truth.

Oh no you are right that was directed to the general public and not you directly. It wasn't supposed to come off in an angry voice either haha sorry if it did.
ghoodonya I know my writing skills are poor, but I was trying to get a message across, not hand this in as an essay to a prof.

Yes I agree, nobody complained about it when WSI was doing the big hit comp.

An added skiing event sounds good to me, and I'm actually interested to see how big they go.

There's no way im going to read your entire (apparently Simon-dick-sucking) post but i clicked on so i feel obligated to post.

Simon is washed up in my mind,...and a homo.

I agree. all you guys need to stop saying that people suck. If you are going to complain and be a fag. then go out and do it your self. learn some respect to these pros. they are out here to progress the level of skiing and you have nothing better to do then bitch and complain.

The footage of Jon on Chads in on NS somewhere. I've seen it several times, and he crashed every attempt. I'll try to dig it up.

The WSI big hit was different. It was who does the biggest AND best trick with style.

Why is the X-games inventing events for freeskiing?

let me tear you apart for a quick second...

1. with a huge prize purse that every skier wants, please tell me how thats not a competition? talking about slope and halfpipe

2. they invite the BEST skiers to the x-games. not the most popular, but the best. the reason they are popular is because they win everything.

3. Dumont is not a douche at all. dont know what kind of friends you got.

4. he hasn't fallen off the wagon by any means. his rails are on point and so is his jumping game. just because hes not doing dub corks and flips doesnt mean he has fallen behind at all.

5. the text voting is ill because it just means more prize money to be spent at the bars.

i dont want to add to any hate in this thread, but this is just dumb. Im not arguing with your opinion, but seriously, this guy made a well presented argument and you came in and started criticizing his thread and your counter argument is that Simon Dumont is a homo. Seriously.....

/mini rant

Skiing is just getting saturated with haters. Thats the way she goes, Aelot is the kind of person that ruins skiing for other people and he doesnt even realize it. Whys everyone so fucking judgemental? Simon will always be amazing, I would go for a switch 10 before a double front on hardpack anyday then you wont get completely fucked if you mess up. Because you can land at 900 or 1260 or just hit at halfway around and still pull it off. Hit a double front there and your fucked. Quit the hating it drives people away.

well i didnt read that whole thing..buttttt what i did read i completely agree with man. xgames=good simon= sick nasty big air in pipe= why the fuck not!!!!!

hey mr. ignant, he did it because he knew the people would think a double front flip would look a lot cooler to the non ski savvy spectators then pk's poked 12, or yours "olsson" flip. hes a very smart guy recognizing that, and he took more then two runs and didnt only do a double front

The new X games event is definitely pushing the sport in the wrong direction, despite pushing it. Nevertheless, I am so stoked to watch decent footage of a freestyle event.

everyone voted for dumont because of what the majority of X-games viewers think is "cool, extreme, or challenging." he did a double superman front-flip which all the people who don't know anything about skiing thought was just amazing.

not hating on dumont because he kills it, just saying.

I think it will be cool, damn I always get stoked when I see guys taking some mad air in the pipe, whether it's skiing or not, I think its really impressive, and push the limits of whats possible. They did it cause they knew there was a market to it. Im sure youve never been to Xgames but you should see how it is a new crowd when Simon Dumont do what he's best at, which means travels a 1260 for like 80 feet haha and taking impressive airs.

Anyway, sick thread dude, brings the love back

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a highest air event. It isn't taking skiing in a wrong direction. It's just pushing the limits more. If they replaced slopestyle or the superpipe event with this big hit even, that would be taking it in the wrong direction. ESPN want's viewers, this will bring them. Your average viewer doesn't understand how difficult a technical trick is, but they can obviously recognize a big hit when they see one. There's nothing wrong with having something that appeals to the general public. I'm excited to see how big THEY go (it's not just a Simon event, a lot of guys boost).

its because people on ns are like sheep, they just follow and copy what other people do. if a few people start hating somenoe then other people join just because they think its the thing to do.

Actually judging from the hits in the Dew Tour, this could really turn out to be anyones game. Kevin Rolland BOOSTS and Peter Olenick as well.

Lets see you back it up? So far the best trick your pics show is a D SPIN 7 on a 30 ft hit? Do you even know what it would be like to double front a 70ft steep park jump full extension in the middle in front of a million people? Because thats what people think is challenging. If its not lets see it boooyyyeeeeee. And you can just do one without the massive park jump or the million people and then we can say you are not extreme or cool. I dont think you know, I think you are probably a fucking puss critic.

not hating on you, dspins are cool, just saying.

sorry guys (and ladies;) )I still don't really like Simon DumontYeah he ripps dicks in the pipe. but,,,,I have two friends who met him on the chairlift and they both rode away disappointed in Simon....

This is exactly why i still like and respect dumont. Anyone with the drive and level of intesity that he brings to the sport deserves respect in my book. I get so pumped watching dumont try and stay in the zone and bring everything he's got to the comps as opposed to everyone else dancing around to their headphones and goofin off before they drop. To each their own but I think a comp is a comp and if you dont want it there then move on to a new scene (which is totally respectable, IE Pep). Tanner brings the same tenacity when he's on the comp scene and then lives it up in the backcountry and i think that's exactly the way it should be. My only issue with Dumont is some of his attitude stuff off the comp scene that seems to either get exaggerated or is just who he is. Either way that makes him what he is.

I do, however, have an issue with ESPN capitalizing on this stuff but it is still not as disgraceful as how they treat the snowboard comps so I can live with it.

exactly he has made bank. if i had the option to make bank i would for sure. i would not deny any big contracts or anything cause i thought i was selling out. who would rather be poor over being rich?

I don't give a shit how successful of a skier you are... it's Simons attitude that I don't likeKids look up to him as a role model.

I thought I would add a little flavor to the argument because of my first hand hate listening yesterday at the dew tour. So I didn't watch much maybe an hour or so of the warm up slope comp and while sitting next to bobby browns parents a kid no older than 16 roles up and undoes his helmet with a built in face mask? anywho it looked dumb as shit. The kid starts ranting and raving about tom wallisch which is fine but then the girl snowboarder who he was with asks a question about dumont or any other competitors. This is where the hate talk starts the kid rants and raves about how dumont sucks and what not all while people maybe 15 of us are trying to watch warm ups. Tom then drops into the course where this douchebag proceeds to fucking commintate everytrick he does, OH right side ten to double etc...at the end of his run (3rd jump) tom does a rodeo in practice and the kid says oh well he should have done a double there.
This is the shit that I don't like seeing in our sport, douchebags who hate for no reason and no offense think tom wallisch is a god(granted he might be).
