The USA shot down Iranian Airliner killing all 290 civilians onboard

it's not like the information isn't available.

The failure of Americans to know about this is their own fault. The info is readily available if you look for it.

you think 290 is bad, I don't even wanna know how many we have killed in drone strikes over the past couple years.

I lost so hard

This is sad and would start ww3 if they did that to a US airliner.

But i godda say thats 290 less trying to get into Canada...thanks obama?

no. its the americans fault. just say it. god this shit is 30 years back and still no single fucking american will say that their forces killed several hundred civilians for no fucking reason.

PEOPLE LIKE YOU AND ME. I WISH I COULD SLAP ANY FUCKHEAD WHO TOOK MY "SECOND CLASS PEOPLE" THING SERIOUS.

any country has so much stuff to be proud of, but what really is important is acknowledging past errors and make fucking sure that this wont happen again and not talking it down and acting like it didnt happen. just try to use your goddamn brain and try to simulate an individual who is actually capable of processing the gravity of such an unforced massacre of hundreds of civilians.

he means that if you cared at all or looked into Iranian-American relations, you would have read about this.

Once again, its not as if this is a shocking secret that was just released. I mean...the wikipedia alone for it has existed for almost a decade.

No, actually if you watched the video, it explains perfectly that it was emitting the signal for an F-14, during an open conflict, and all attepts to communicate with the plane failed before they were shot down.

Nobody's saying it wasn't "american's fault" becaus ethey obviously shot the fucking thing down. What he was saying is that there was a reason it was shot down, not just because all americans everywhere are assholes.

there are a few members on this site who simply love to hate the US as it gives them a false sense of superiority. don't try to reason with them.

other planes transmit that signal not just f-14s, thats juts one of the planes. the guy just jumped to conclusions which led to the death of 290 civilians. also the "warship" didnt have communication devices for commercial ariliners so how the hell are the supposed to communicate with them. It was a buncha noobs ina conflct for the first time and they panicked. The guy in the video even said "we were on a fighting ship but never expected to be in combat." what the fuck? your job is to fight to defend our country how to you never expect to enter combat.

Would you be happier if he said "Fuck yeah we came here to kick ass and chew bubblegum- and we're fresh out of fucking gum, brah"

Look- did you watch it at all? The plane was emitting a signal identical to a military aircraft, and on a military craft frequency. Whether or not a conclusion was jumped to is a matter of opinion, but I doubt you'd wait around to visually see if it was indeed an F-14 if you were in charge of the safety of everyone on board and were in open conflict- if it was, you'd be too late.

I think that you're also forgetting this is the 80s and there's more technology in your phone than there was on that entire ship- also warships are generally there to dissuade conflict rather than perpetuate it. Who knew there were going to be idiots on rafts shooting at them??

Look, nobody is happy this happened- but the video shows eyewitness accounts of exactly what happened, why it happened, and what went wrong was identified and fixed. What exactly do you want to happen???

Well we sure as hell weren't going to miss em

Thats one thing America is damn sure good at. We hit our targets.

i dont want 290 innocent people to die. You really think the f14, if there was one would sink the american vessel? all over the warship shooting some rebels in the sea? if it was an f14 he would probably make contact after a quick flyby. i just think the unit REALLY dropped ball and should have been more patient during this conflict

Can't we just agree that this was an accident?? If you were in the same situation, and a possible fighter jet was coming towards you, and wouldn't talk to you, I'm sure you'd feel bad after you shot it down. But its not like there was much of a choice.

Well fortunately you and I have the luxury of simply sitting back in our chairs and nitpicking the actions of people who really were in harm's way that day. I'm sure there isn't a single one of them who doesn't think about it every day and wish they had done something different. Unfortunate as it may be though, patience is not something you're often afforded in combat. Whether or not it could have sank the ship is irrelevant, although I understand what you're trying to say even if your premise is incorrect (they wouldn't do a fly by first).

Either way, there's no taking it back now. No sense in peope getting all worked up over some shit that happened before 3/4 of NS was even born, and that wasn't even done on purpose. I'm positive we could post video of the atrocities that went down in japanese prison camps during WWII as well, but there's no sense in that either- and that was 100% deliberate. Take a deep breath and move on with your life.

The Navy isn't in the business of guessing whether or not a single plane can sink their ship. At that time the Iranians supposedly (later confirmed) had some captured Exocet missiles, which yes, could have sunk the ship very easily.

If it's unidentified, approaching, and out of contact over a hot zone, it's not the time to be saying "well maybe they're friendly."

or you just didnt watch any of the video because, a majority of what youre saying contradicts facts that the video laid out

What is this, red rover?

You don't need to pick a side. You don't need to pass a judgement. You don't even need an opinion. It's just something that happened.

The most depressing thing about this is the reactions of half the kids who posted in here. I'm sorry but saying it doesn't matter and no one gives a shit doesn't make you look cool, it just makes you a moron. Seriously you cannot post anything even remotely serious on here, too many 13 years old to ruin what could be an interesting debate.

This is history, not a debate....and I'll add that if you don't know what the fuck you're talking about (AKA almost everything regarding aviation that wasn't actually in the video) then you should probably shut the fuck up and not make wild, uneducated assumptions. Stick to the facts or your knowledge if you're going to debate something.
