The Surfing Thread

Let's make the colorado /landlocked kids with good mountains jealous (Sorry midwest, you don't have oceans or good mountains, so lol). I know there's other surfers here. Post quivers, photos, whatever. That Bali contest is coming up, and it's live streamed.

I'll start. I ride these

I shaped the two teal ones, that thread can be found here.

The small, striped one is my most recent creation, 5'4"x20.75x2.3" ish. Super fast, wide tailed, super fun for summer. Twin and trailer, cause I like twins, but figured such a wide tail might need some help. The other was my first shape, and the blue one is a 6'4"x22"x3" by a local shaper out of asbury park. It's a missile. But I currently suck at surfing large boards, cause I'm very used to skateboarding and I'm a small person. I even have to concentrate to make the 5'4" turn sharp; it's still slower than a skateboard. But I got my backside turns back. And my break rarely produces a viable left, and I'm goofy, so you know how that goes. Backside rides all day.

I think noseriding is the coolest thing ever, but both riding and shaping a 9' board are intimidating. Eventually... I also shoot photos, although it's hard to watch your friends get great waves through a finder sometimes. So I shoot a lot of the stuff around surfing.

And there's more on my flickr. Summer is about to start. Time to ditch the boots and fullsuits and make turns around all the noobs. I hope it's nice on the 21st, cause I plan on making the longest day of the year a great day of surfing, followed by skating this bowl near my house. Or surfing till sunset, hard to decide.

Those fins are sweet! Is it blue paint on black plastic or black on blue plastic?

Can't wait to surf again! Spent 5 weeks on the west coast of france last year - first time i spent a long continuous trip surfing - I got pretty good from being pretty much a beginner, can't wait to get a trip somewhere soon! I'm hoping Morocco if i can save enough.

This is what ive been riding recently (Picture is from when she was brand new) A bit wide but good in all conditions! 5'8", 19.5

Frothing!!!

You can surf in the Great Lakes...Just a heads up. We have many pro teams from O'neil, Ripcurl, Roxy, and others in the area frequently because of the uniqueness behind it. Some even claim it's world class in Lake Superior, not because of swell size, but just the coolness behind it.

-10'x23 3/8x3.25 takayama model T

I hate the summer in terms of waves, I'd prefer snowy 38 degree barrels than 65 degree knee high slop with a lineup full of soft tops any day. I've been shaping a bunch as well, but mostly for my friends. I have my boards really dialed in and everything ive made wasnt just right. Ive probably made 15 or so boards. I do it more to "mentally surf" when its small than anything else. I try and get artsy with it and put in rice paper inlays, make bamboo fins etc. something to keep me sane.

Sidenote: If anyone needs boards or wetsuits or anything surf related, if i dont have it already, I can probably get it for you.

Yeah I've always wanted to surf the great lakes. From what I've heard it's best in the worst weather too. Summer isn't as good wave wise that's for sure. And I've definitely been taken off my board while up and riding by a stray soft top before. Also I don't have a proper suit for winter, which I'll have to get. That gives me an excuse to shape a hpsb twin fin too.

Also normally I don't do the colored wax thing, but I'm definitely doing red white and blue stripes for 4th of july.

But the board I just shaped feels right enough. I think I could have done even less volume though. Especially in the tail. I'm 120lbs and 5'5", and I think I always give myself a bit too much volume when designing things. The board definitely has no issue going in summer mush though. So many boards I want to try, but I don't want to end up with a giant quiver.
