The Rob Dyrdek of Skiing.....

So I am thinking about how extremely similar skiing is to skateboarding. For skateboarding there is a super big name, "Rob Dyrdek," who promotes skateboarding to an amazing level. He has not only had a career as a skateboarder, but also the career of a businessman and Hollywood "C-List" Celebrity. When will skiing see an individual achieve similar success? And who will it be?

jon already does. not really as flashy with the tv series and stuff, but he is a celebrity over in europe

Jon isn't really the same, he has't made a reality t.v show of him talking smack and doing stupid shit. No skier is like Rob or Bam who is quite similar. besides those shows are always summer shananigens i don't know how it's go in winter, need bikinis and shit. Closest is prob Colby or chug.

Roner gets made fun of way to often on that show for him to be taken seriously by the general public the way Rob is (notice how on Rob's shows he's the one making fun of others most of the time, while on Nitro Circus Roner is a huge target for getting made fun of).

there is no skier that is such an attention whore that they have to have a TV series that is always on MTV. no skier has that much cockyness.

colby west hasn't accomplished anything other than being a funny skier. rob owns a large part of DC, and is an incredibly successful business man

this is who i was thinking of. olympics always make u mainstream. We will see what happens after 2014.

There isn't, nor will there ever be, a Rob Dyrdek of skiing. Just like there will never be a Shaun White of skiing, or a Shamoo of skiing. Why are these threads made.

Splice Productions gets my vote. They're releasing a movie this summer and theyre going to be up at windells! Spl1ce l1f3!!!

if there is one, it is either jon or tanner. T hall owns a large part of armada, has his own media company, and is a guy from the same era. but he isn't nearly as famous

being a mediocre athlete and selling your likeness and looks to the man after a short washed up 'career' sounds about like most female pro skiers these days .

1. skiing and skateboarding are not extremely similar. They wouldn't be at all if it weren't for skiers copying snowboarders (until this year finally) who copied skaters.2. Someone who has 2 hit TV shows on MTV and is a pro athlete is not a c-list celeb. The guy who wears the barney suit is c-list.

3. Jon Olssen is similar but again not the same since unlike Dyrdeck who still skates and is a business man JO no longer rides park and has left us for the world of racing. But I'm not bitter, my point is that RD has near universal respect in the skate world even by those who don't like his style or attitude because he seems at least to be an ambivalent harmless force in a stratified disparate skate industry/community.

Skiing on the other hand is about as tight-nit as it can get which is good, but that combined with the high cost of participating which skateboarding doesn't have, has caused skiing to be slightly closed off. Skiing, despite popular styles and attitudes is still elitist, and while it'll be cool when we eventually get a TV show devoted to us, you need to remember that everyone can't go skiing, everyone doesn't live somewhere where it's possible and if you do live somewhere where the snow is great you've got 8 months at best until the snow's gone and you need to find something else to do while it's warm. I guess in that regard it's a little like surfing, something that people can admire from a far but don't necessarily have access to. We have our own celebs and when the olympics come they'll get to show off to the world. But it probably won't be anyone you'd expect... or maybe Tom Wallisch will become a household name outside of places where the skis have no camber the t's are tall and gold toothed guys shooting guns out a speeding car is a funny joke not a reason you can't leave your house after dark.

Don't worry though, if this past season has shown us anything it's that skiing can have its own unique identity, and that we can finally stop being out cooled by snowboarders. We'll get someone or someones but it won't be who we expect.

yeah you're right, the jokes on tosh's show are not funny. joel mchale is a way better comic and doesn't look like an overweight hipster.
