I have been smoking cig's for about 5 months now and i want to quit. I know that 5 months is not a lot of time, but it is not a healthy choice. Now this is where NS comes in...

MORAL SUPPORT!

Post your "I quit smoking" stories, or anything that could possibly help!

Thanks guys!

Here is to better health,

Victor Petrella

Mind over matter, you can do it. Find something else to do everytime you are craving a cig, you'll get over it in no time.

buy lollipops , it works.

I smoke , its been a little less than a year , but i dont actually feel like quitting. I limit myself to 3 smokes a day and its not too bad, i still have a cardio and everything. ill quit when i realize the addiction is starting to get out of hand

I smoke like a chimney and have done for about 10 years...quitting is on the agenda.

i quit smoking cigs and i've done it a few times. it's not about doing it for a week or even a month. Concentrate on just stopping for every day and just don't let yourself go because if you give yourself and inch you will take a mile. It's really not worth it and finally i quit after several tries. Just do it on your first though.

i have smoked for a good 5 years bout half a pack a day... tried quitting a number of times... i realize that if i dont quit im going to die... but im soooooo addicted. i literally HATE smoking i curse it every time i light one up but if i dont do it i feel like im gonna have a panic attack...

it sucks balls.... fuck tobacco companies and peer pressure...

get a girlfriend

if you smoke weed, smoke before you go to bed once in awhile if you cant sleep without a cig,

but dont overdue it, because depandancy happens like that

again with the lollipops

thankfully i never smoked, so i never had to quit.

My dad on the other hand smoked for something like 6 years, then one day decided it was getting too expensive and didn't benefit him in any way....so he quit. That was it, he said he would, first try, he did it. Never smoked again.

It might be a lot more mind over matter, just take it 1 step, 1 day at a time.

oh. well, thanks for the corrections, i was just going on what my dad told me, and he apparently had no problem getting over it.

word that's how my dad was. he just decided to quit, and did. now he just "chews" on cigars, and will light one up once a month or so and has no problem with it.

i smoke every once in a while, like a couple packs a month but it is really only if they are available at a party or whatever...

COLD TURKEY!!! ITS ALL MIND POWER, QUIT BEING A PUSSY AND JUST FUCKIN DO IT. FUCK MORAL SUPPORT, BE A MAN, SAY SOMETHING THEN FUCKIN DO IT.

You uh... being sarcastic or are you just retarded, champ?

But yeah dude, it's hard as shit. Everyone who says take it one day at a time is spot on. I recommend taking any credit/debit cards you have and leaving them in the care of a trusted friend, they make it too easy to cave in to impulse buys. Don't carry money on you unless it's spoken for or unless you have to. Every time you want one, think "Do I actually need a cigarette right now? Or is it just the withdrawal?" Get toothpicks, lollipops, anything to distract you from cravings. I also recommend hanging out pretty much exclusively with nonsmokers for at least the first week, seeing other people smoke blows so much haha. I also wouldn't drink (lower inhibitions + cigarettes and alcohol is yum yum)... worked for me until I got a job that requires me to do absolutely nothing except stare at piles of cigarette packs/cartons for six hours a night, and I'd been smoking half a pack a day for over a year when I started.

i quit straight up over winter break then started getting back into parties every once and a while at school. When i would be out and one of my friends was lighting up and offered me one it was so hard to turn down. Evenutally i gave in and now i smoke every once and a while. If you dont have a pack its not that bad. If you give in and by a pack just think of the money you spent...5 bucks to kill your self its just stupid man. Such a stupid thing i told my self I NEVER would smoke a cig because i watched my grandma die a painfull death from cancer but what do you know, theres half a pack of marlb reds sittin right next to me right now.

Good luck man, its how much you really want it and how much you can turn down the free offeres the first few weeks of quitting

A pack of cigarettes costs between $12-$14 where I live. at AU$13, Thats roughtly US$12.16.

A pack every day:

$12.16 x 365 = US$7721.16...

At least if you are knowingly killing yourself, why not go broke in the process...

Fuck it's stupid/i'm stupid.

the one thing i can tell you if you want to quit is:

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS ONE MORE

if you can have that attitude you'll be fine.

Thanks guys.... I have low will power and give in mostly all the time.

And to the person who said hang out with non smokers, i already do. My 3 best friends dont smoke, and i dont honestly think they even know i do. I hide it very well.

And i have come to the conclusion that it is 95% an oral fixation. I need something to do. When i was quiting one time, i filled a whole Pringles can of sunflower seed shells that i spit. All in one day.

Thanks for the support though.

And there is one plus side....

my friends do alot. it bugs the shit outta me. we are only 15 as well. i really dont see the point in it and i have never smoked a cig and never hope to.

thats why i dont smoke cigs, weed, do any drugs or drink. cause like a couple years after people start, they realise how shitty they feel and they wanna quit. its cool when people ask me if i wanna smoke weed or something and i say i dont smoke, they always say something like "man i wish i didnt smoke"

anyway one of my friends just told us to make lots of fun of him "he was a HUGE stoner, so we made him feel like a piece of shit and after like 1 month, he was done. so maybe try that.

this is how i quit. although i wouldt say i quit. im down from a half pack a day to a smoke every few days to a week or so. STOP buying smokes. Dont go out partying for two weeks. When you do ease back intot it. When you feel like you need a smoke, leave. Im still on my way out of smoking. It's been 5 years from me. However in the last 3 months I haven't bought a pack. Ive stopped accepting smokes from friends and I feel way better. I now have the odd smoke every couple weeks, but it really is difficult for the first few weeks then it gets easier. at least for me. but 2 things you gotta do. 1. quit buying smokes. 2. quit drinking for 2 or 3 weeks. i.e. no getting wasted. only a few beers a night and not around smokers.

fuck that will-power bullshit. not one has this thing called "will power"...

start sweating right now..no you cant? ok...how about you move that pencil in front of you with your mind..ok. you dont have will power. it doesnt exist.

if you want to stop smoking you will.

i stopped because i wanted to be able to haul ass up a bootpack at 10,000 feet, my girlfriends grandfather is in the hospital dying, it destroys my lungs, i dont like coughing up black shit at the dinner table, i dont like lieing to people about it, i dont want it to affect my family in any negative way.

stop being such a pussy and just do it..and im not trying to be an asshole. im just being real...coming from a coke addiction where i had cold sweats everynight for a month afterwards and getting 3 hours of sleep everynight..then smoking cigs and constantly going through all of the above..think about how the consequences outweigh the benefits...thats all i really have to say.

I smoked for 6 years and was at a 1.5 packs a day. I quit cold turkey and it fucking sucked, but was totally worth it.

Last year I ran a marathon. You just have to want it. Give yourself a reason to quit, not just "because its bad."

the only thing that makes it "cool" is the fact that they're so bad for you, and you feel like a badass smoking, which fades once you get addicted

im used to smoke but then i "quit" and would just smoke at parties. now, im playing lacrosse and so im not smoking at all, parties included.

any tips or anything that can help me gain a better lung capacity?

Get a girlfriend that doesn't smoke and is a health fanatic. She will nag you into stopping. Girlfriends exist to nag you into quitting shit, they love it.

Hahahaha... This is actually the single most effective way to quit smoking, I can't believe such a powerful tool wasn't mentioned earlier.

i quit a while ago cold turkey and now ive been buying like a pack biweekly just for some times. imabout to quit buds when i get back from springbreak hopefully

ufff smoking is a hassle..started 2 summmers ago coz i got injured !!! longest non smoking break i took was 6 weeks and it was fine i started out of boredom or hanging out with friends who smoked !! i used to smoke a pack a day.. now i m down to max 3 ciggies a day !! weekends i dont smoke.. worst is to not smoke a ciggie after a good meal !!! argh but i really do wanna quit so i try to keep it down

if its the oral fixation thing then there are two things which really help, one is sunflower seeds i compulsively eat these because i have such a bad oral fixation, and the second is maybe try dipping to ween yourself off.

Well first thing is first, making a quit smoking thread is only gonna make you think about smoking even more. If you truly want to quit just stop hanging out with people that smoke for 2 days, after the first 2 days its actualy not that hard. It just shows how much you really wanna quit

i really recommend patches. they work amazingly. the first time i tried, i went about a week and a half then got really drunk and fucked myself over. however, last week, i tried again to quit out of no where, and its been so easy. patches help so much. i hate chewing gum and don't recommend it. and last night, before the party, i just bought a 5 pack of philly chocalte cigarello's. it was all good, didn't inhale.

btw i smoked a pack of newports a day and my twin brother and my best friends still smoke. but i was motivated because of the navy and working out.

its too hard to go cold turkey, you need baby steps if anything

haha i said the exact same thing, it doesnt work that way, i dare you to try and then get back to me with the results.
