"The Problem of Female Athletes "

This article pretty much nails it for me.
http://www.outdoorwomensalliance.com/2014/01/female-athletes-in-media.html

"Taking into the account the history of women’s objectification in sport-related media, should this really come as a surprise? After all, the dominant discourse goes something like this: Girls are pretty, but they can’t really do sports, so let’s put a token girl in here and there. Make sure she looks really hot. After all, it’s not about her skills, it’s about her cute face. She will make men buy the magazine and make other women want to be like her, because men find her attractive. I mean, what other things could a woman possibly want from doing sports apart from finding a guy?"

"Thanks to technological progress, women can make free-from-patriarchy media for themselves. However, some argue its need. They ask why female athletes, amateur or professional, would want to separate themselves from men in the media or, more largely, why the world needs women-orientated sport media at all? Seen as over-kill, it is often associated with a lack of self-confidence and a need to take the stage side-by-side with men.

The answer lies not in separation nor the fear of comparisons, but in creating balance. As long as there is a glaring lack of content that fairly represents women, it will be needed.

It’s also about "selling" sports, including climbing, to women. Why are there still less female climbers than male? It’s not because we like climbing less, but because our culture doesn’t encourage women to be physical in the same way it does for men, so we miss out on all the positive consequences that come with using our bodies for reasons other than satisfying the male gaze. (I trust that I don’t need to list them here.) In a time when media influences children as much as families and schools, it’s more important to strive for fair representation to help young girls get excited about physical activity.

Before deeming women-specific media an over-kill, think about this: To climb, to train, to write and make adventure content is just as important for those women out there doing it as it is for men. No more, and no less. It's time to help women in this pursuit with fair and balanced media that inspires women toward athletic, not aesthetic, goals."

Amen!!!! This is one of the reasons why I created Lost Girls...not to separate ourselves from our male counterparts, but to encourage women to do stuff. To exemplify a spirit of independence and adventure. Also, to show the next generation of girls that doing things instead of spending time trying to look good generally makes a person more real and fulfilled.

I wish some of the guys on this site would understand this, then maybe we'd stop seeing all these "why aren't girls progressing as much" threads.

Really nice article. It's so weird how the gender distribution changes depending on the sport too. Like that one girl in the article mentioned that climbing had way more women than aggressive inline.

I noticed this when I went downhill mountain biking. I thought skiing was male dominated! The whole time I was out on the trails or eyeing people from the lift I only saw one other woman. It was almost surreal walking through the parking lot and lodge and seeing nothing but men.

Yessss. This x100.

Kinda torn on this though.

I fully support women progressing but at the same time, I don't care. I mean, if girls want to go out and kill it and take the sport to new levels, thats awesome and I have a lot of respect for you. I also think it's important for us to have fun and not feel like we have to amount to whatever people think. There's been a ton of debate on the women's side comparing to the men's side. Why do we feel like we have to be as good as pro dudes. Like we don't.

I guess I'm more of a supporter of community building within and around the sport.

I know Lady Gabber has it's critics. However, this shit is rad. We are so few and far between that having one place where we can all come together is really sick. I feel like having this community here to bring girl skiers together accomplishes more than we see. I think a lot of us see NS as a "forum", but really this is a community; the freefuckingskiing community. Ns is a perfect tool for bringing us together locally, nationally, and internationally.

Bringing more girls together, getting more crews out there, getting our content out there will bring a new(?)/ better(?) image to the girls side. And thats what's gonna set us up for success. Using NS and using LG to get girls stoked and show them an awesome community is a pretty solid way to put the ideals of this article to good use.

TL;DR Bring girls together, get them stoked on skiing, and show them everything that there is AND BADA BING BADA BOOM WE HAVE THE ILLEST COMMUNITY EVER.

/incoherent rant.

That's exactly what the article is about... creating a community for women for us to simply coexist, and while doing it without needing to be demeaned and sexualized by media, because we're deemed incapable of physical activity because we're women.

Playing devil's advocate here.... Julie Ellison - the female editor of Climbing Magazine wrote this interesting rebuttal to the article posted above.

there's no doubt in my mind this situation is a catch 22. We're fed roles from birth, be it boys don't cry, or girls wear pink, or women are objects, and men are stupid. it's not one particular persons issue, ever, it's everyone's. there's many points at the root of every problem.
