The Pale Blue Dot

Awesome video that im not entirely sure has been posted. Figured I would share for those who have not seen it yet. The words of Sagan really lay out the reality of our importance in a vast and unknown universe.

dont like science? or did you realize that you and everything you do is insignificant when it comes to the universe.

love science. realized everything i did was insignificant a very long time ago. i don't need a 6 minute video telling me the same incredibly obvious thing over and over again in the most cliched way possible.

dude if you like science, then how are you upset about one of carl sagan's (one of the greatest scientific minds)famous quotes, with him reading it?

well this is barely even science, is it? the first two minutes are good. maybe even first 3 or 4 but the last two ruin it for me. it's like listening to someone trying to write poetry for the first time.

i'm not upset, my first post was probably a little strong. i don't necessarily dislike that much, i just don't think its as great as everyone says it is.

Well that was awesome. Leave it to NewSchoolers to turn even a Sagan video into a quasi-shitstorm.

Genuinely enjoyed that. So well made, so well spoken, made me want to explore the universe, or at least this.. pale blue dot.

the earth is, as far as we know, the only planet with life, aka. anything interesting going on, among the trillions and trillions of planets are stars, and you kids think we're not significant. we're fucking sentient beings, created out of rocks and gasses, i think that's pretty significant.

yeah, but in the grand scale of the universe we know very little. it seems extremely unlikely to me that we are the only planet in the universe capable of sustaining life. though i do like your attitude. i think the fact that we are alive and that we can make the lives of those around us better or worse is enough to say that we "matter."

i'm not saying that we're the only planet around that has life, i'm saying that any planet that can sustain life is as significant as you can get in the universe, seeing as us and any other life-sustaining planet is literally one in trillions and trillions and trillions

if something as vast as science, math or history can pass through your head without even scraping the sides, thats a pretty big hole, one could only hope to fill such a void with fluffy stories of supernatural beings, floods, talking flaming bushes and other types of "magic".

...wut? how does that at all relate to him saying that "science" is a broad term? and why does him saying that it is broad mean he has no grasp on reality? you yourself just called science "vast," which is an even stronger word than "broad"

Science is the very simple and exact idea that things in this world that we observe can be explained with the natural, physical laws of the universe. It isn't a broad concept at all. You dont see people arguing over what "science" is very often because anyone with a molecule of common sense in their head can usually tell what it is and what it isn't.

physics, chemistry, biology, geology, astrology, astronomy, anthropology, sociology, and all the mathematical sciences. you could easily make the argument for any of these things being a science. and that's just off the top of my head.

even if your definition is correct, it's still pretty broad, no? the universe is a big place. there is a lot that needs to be explained. but maybe that isn't what you are thinking of when you say "broad"

if you really want to get nitpicky, everything has it roots in physics... not trying to argue, but physics runs everything.
