The online list is a fucking rainbow

it's starting to get kind of ridiculous.... also the severe increase of ads is getting kind of annoying too. right now there is a subaru us freeskiing nationals banner where my messages usually are. not a fan of that at all. I know ns went corporate, but its starting to affect the site.

well, the only different color i see is orange, and i think that is just an experiment... and i turned off the ads with an add blocker

so, im sitting pretty good right now

Wait... but the subaru freeskiing nationals isn't an ad. Its promoting a live broadcast on the site?

The orange names are supposed to be helpful...

Hah crap... both of those things were meant to BENEFIT the users. Do you guys hate them?

also i noticed jdc is now mod green but in his profile it dosnt say that he is a mod. explain? also how come the improvments page or what ever at the bottom of the page hasnt been updated, we are still stuck in version 3.7.11!

I don't know why you're complaining. It's not THAT big of a deal. The Subaru thing isn't annoying at all. It's not flashing in my face, or getting in the way of messages. It's chillin in the upper left corner. The colored names? I believe they are to be helpful. But again, they aren't annoying. So, don't bitch.

id say 1/3 of my post was about current issues and 2/3 was about the direction of the site. sure the addition of orange isnt a big deal, but pink, blue, orange and green are all being used right now. at this rate, there will eventually be 8 different colors describing people. originally newschoolers was a community (by all means it still is). if we keep seperating people though and designating colors, people are going to have more influence and power, just like in any real life community. i dont want people to be afraid or intimidated to respond to a thread because it was started by "an industry insider." in the same light, i dont want people to consider their opinions any more powerful than their own. mattyb (not to call anyone out or say his opinions are bad) is just a senior in highschool who happens to own a company, thus making him orange. therefore there is a good chance he can be very wrong about something (again, just using him as an example since he happens to be online right now, nothing against him). because hes orange though, kids are going to praise him.

As for the ads, i've noticed less non skiing related ones (though that may be because ive been on the site slightly less), but those were extremely annoying. in vermont, its illegal to have billboards. if newschoolers is going to remain a community, perhaps we should consider limiting advertisement. I realize the subaru freesking banner was for nstv, but in my mind it is still a distracting banner. i want to read the messages that other members of the community send to me, not be shouted at through a banner. I think a banner that runs across the top would be effective enough to catch my attention for the nstv event. my apologies if i came off too harsh originally, but really i just dont want newschoolers to lose its community feel and become more like transworld snowboarding which is the website most snowboards view regularly. I think newschoolers is a huge part of our sport and adds to the uniqueness of the vibe. i just dont want that getting lost in an overload of features and banners.

The orange is dope just another way of telling who's legit. Seein posts from jon and tanner is real nice. I thought using ski equipment forums to advertise for your company was an issue in the past, but I see a couple orange names took advantage of their fancy colors and snagged some free advertisement for sales. Overall i dig the orange. On the add note, I dont think I'll ever be a fan of the "find your classmate your #1000000" They just cover a beautiful header but business is business. I think the "Subaru" attention grabber could be put on the front page instead of where messages go. Lil overkill in my opinion but hey idk what attracts more traffic.

That's because last night I tricked Doug by setting his color orange. Then he tricked me back by setting mine green. But changing the user color doesn't grant a privilege. Anyway, I did reset my color back to normal.

MattMcGinnis, you have good points. I don't think anybody like these random ads. And Doug might be the first one on the list who wish to replace them with legits one. As I remember I read a post from him saying something like that.

The new color is there to helps the users on the site in a certain way. Doug, Chris and Paul receives a fair amount of messages regarding companies questions. They are about sponsoring, events, warranties and other stuff. So, this might redirect those guys to the right members (industry ones).

i'd say the orange would do the opposite. i think people would be more prone to reply in a thread because it was started by someone in orange. plus, the people who have been turned orange don't post that often. its a way for people to know who to talk to when they have a question about what they offer. i think with mattyb., i think that its dope he's so young, and he doesn't own just any company. he has also advertised on NS which could be another reason.

Orange is absolutely in no way intended to give people more power. Its not to say they are any better, or anything else. The only purpose is for you guys to identify them and be able to not ask questions of who the fuck does this guy think he is? Its also sweet that companies can have official representation on here, so if you've got quetsions for Salomon, find the orange salomon name and blammo you're taking the question straight to the horses' mouth.

As for the ads... yeah I know that this is a problem. Honsestly its not the solution that I wanted, but we really upped the ante on our offerings this year and that shit cost a lot of dough. Things like brining Schmuck on board, doing broadcasts, paying journalists, developing the site, getting better server equipment, etc, etc... all of that stuff cost, and we didn't get nearly the industry support that we were hoping. The companies that did support us were great, and we should all make sure to buy their product over the others... because lets face it we just didn't get the support we were hoping for.

So, in light of needing to bridge the gap in costs somewhat, the remnant ads (which are the ones you guys hate) had to be implemented. The only reason they are there though is to fill the gap until we can lock down more advertisers directly interested in NS.

Sure NS is moving forwards, and with growth it will seem that the direction is more corporate... but what is that really? I mean sure there's some banner advertisements, but does that single handedly rip the soul out of this site? I dunno... I guess there's different opinions on that matter, but we're still the same guys trying to make the same dope site for you guys. That hasn't changed at all.

We've just got some bigger stakes at hand now, which I guess does change some stuff, but it is the natural pains of growth to have a bit of difficulty with this. I assure you though, we will not let this site start to suck. Hell if we fuck it up I'll burn it to the ground myself.

Oh and no likey the "hype" banners? We just thought it would be good to use those to bring extra hype to super special things we do... we don't have any other way of promoting things like the live broadcasts...

I don't know how the adds work and maybe its my computer but they're location is always changing.. Sometimes there's a hype add where my messages are and sometimes its directly below the site interact fourms. ect toolbar. Sometimes there's both and sometimes there's none. The hype add directly below the toolbar is perfect. Its clean, convenient, and i'll still notice it. To me the hype where my messages are isn't as clean. I respect that you guys are trying to target more relevant companies for header adds.

Im glad you at least have a lot of really good reasons for my complaints. i personally may have handled them differently to avoid eye drama such as this:

but i guess the fact that im the only one who sees it as a problem must say something to your benefit.

Keeping it fresh! I dunno... different spots and not ads all the time?

Changes the vibe up...

The spot under the navbar isn't an ad... its kinda funny that its being thought of one. Well I guess it is an ad, but its just announcing things happening on the site.

Yeah, we split the internal site promotion images from the advertiser spots. That's how we got the new ad spots above the online list and below the navbar.

Does anybody have suggestions for different spots?

That being said, please can everyone have some patience? I've never seen newschoolers able to offer so much content before and it's amazing. Live feeds, SSE, Gear Previews, New Staff etc are all making this place #1 and it would be a shame to lose all of that stuff. Yes, some of it is annoying but it's pretty easy to look past.

I don't see what the big deal is regarding the colors. If one extra color is too much now where was the bitching about all the other ones a year ago?

Regarding the google ads we need to accept it as it is and go out of our way daily and click on them a few times. The more times we click on them the more dope shit NS can bring to us. Hasn't it paid off this year by having so many sick articles to read daily and all of the videos to watch? I appreciate everything NS has done over the years, without them I wouldn't have made it through work daily.

It would be sick to that the grey #cccccc though.

Even more funny! More you talkshit, more you have a bad Karma, more you fade to disappear. So it goes to a NS pimpy blue to grey #cccccc.

By the way, these are jokes.

i still dont understand what the orange names are supposed to represent if anything... other than confusion! haha

what do the orange names mean??

and to be fair the ads arnt that bad, and they're making cash for the site which will benefit skiers in events like the hostile takeover or battle my crew etc, which gets some media attention on the site, i just dont worry about it, its a good thing for ns.

OOO I see my name. If thats is what you are refering too by rainbow of colors, idk what to tell you. The donators have always been listed first in the members list. And since many of the people that have helped shaped NS or play a part of it, are donators that have the coins. So yes, there will alwyas be some mods, admins, and industry members along with the normal members at the top.

And about the ads, they bring the site $, w/o them i dont think the site would be where it is now. I dont like them, but i live with them.

i actually love them. i always like to read the threads created by the pros. and its always cool to know when its a pro or not

really? The colors on the side not being all uniform and boring blue.. this is a problem?
