The official Vinyl thread

Hey guys! I've been searching around the forums here and i haven't found any good threads about vinyls so I thought; Why not make one? and that is what i'm doing.

For me getting a turntable to play vinyls has always been a dream and last week my grandfather hooked me up with a old rack with a FM player, cassette player, amplifier and a turntable. Anyways, I don't know anything about vinyls, turntables etc. I Think that this thread can be about discussing about everything that relates to vinyls from turntables, speakers, records that you guys recommend.

I started last getting into this vinyl thingy last week so I don't have single LP unfortenately, but a friend of mine have borrowed me some his ones and i love it. Right now i'm listening to Meat Loaf - Bat out of hell.

Are there any vinyls that you guys recommend me to get? I listen a lot different music, but i prefer rock like Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Black Keys.

My setup right now is the one that my grandfather hooked me up with. Sanyo TP250 turntable with a Sanyo JA 350 amplifier and a pair of Jamo Power 120B speakers.

Come on guys, don't be shy! Post up your setups, favourite vinyls and great memories with the vinyls, turntables.

Vinyl is great but really expensive.

Focus on getting a good cartridge+stylus and setting it right. It is one of the most important part of the soundsystem and will help not degrade your records too much.

As far as getting some, yard sales can prove to be goldmines if you know what you're looking for! But internet and some shops are great too.

Too expensive. Get rid of everything now.

Sinner.

Yes get a new cartridge, not some cheap Stanton one.

Are you planning on scratching? Better check the the drive, if its a beltdrive, you shouldn't (at least not too much).

You will also need a phono preamp

PP400 will do the job and is affordable

I'll be rocking this on my helmet next season

Holla at me

For now i don't have the money or knowledge of what cartridge i should get, but the setup i have now works fine for me haha. I read around the intermenetz about those phono preamps, but i dont need one since the amplifier that i'm using has its own Phono input.

Do you have any good sites that you can buy cheap vinyls and that ships internationally (i live in Norway) ?

Thanks! I just finished listeing to Pink Floyd - The Final Cut for the second time today. So stoked haha.

Man, I love vinyl. Absolutely wonderful sound. I have many new and used record stores around my area (montreal) so finding them is not a problem whatsoever for me. I have been in the process of collection a lot of jazz vinyls lately. I feel like "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis should be in your collection. Maybe some John Coltrane as well. Nothing classier than that.

Garage sales and thrift stores are great places to find vinyl.

I'd recommend just buying a few cheap records and seeing whats on them. Don't get too caught up in having certain albums, half the fun and value of a vinyl collection is discovering new music and collecting obscurities.

My stepdad gave me his old record player and my dad gave me a box of old records. I've definitely found the best place to look is thrift and antique stores, you're probably going to have to sit on the ground, but you can find some awesome records for like 90 cents. If you are willing to pay a little more you can go ahead and go to local music shops, I live in a big city so we've got some local owned shops that have some solid music choices, but you'll end up paying like 5-10 dollars for a record, maybe even more. But there's nothing that compares to the sound of vinyl, so good.
