The year is 2016 and I was still living in Aspen at the time. X games just rolled through and was over that night (I’m not a comp watcher or even x games guy really) but when they roll through your town you still gotta go watch. Henrik placed like 10th in I forget what, but anyhow that’s besides the point. I’m getting plastered at the local bar with some friends and low and behold I see Henrik harlaut in the corner. There’s strong party vibes and it’s a blast. At some point I walk up and shoot the shit with him. He’s saying he’s just bummed about he performed and whatever. So I tell him I have a couple of blunts if he wants one. We go outside this place and there I am, smokin some marejiwona with the man himself, Henrik Harlaut.
We’re just talkin, at some point I ask him how long he’s gonna be in town for and he said just that night, he’s gonna ski tomorrow then fly out at night. I ask him where he’s stayin. He said he still needed to figure that out cuz his buddies already left town and he forgot to book a place. So I offer this man to crash at my place.
Fast forward we’re just chillin at my apartment and he asks what skis I ride. I pull out of my closet my sego big horn 170s 86mm. Henrik says nothing when I reveal them to him. After a pause I go “what do ya think?” He goes “ they’re kinda short”. Standing at 6’2 I awkwardly laugh it off.
damn I think to myself, I should’ve bought armadas.
Anyhow he sleeps over, packs his stuff and is out the next morning. I see him in the park a little later. I roll up, chit chat. Tell him my best trick on the 50 foot jump is a 180 but I want to try something else. He tells me “you should try a cork seven” initially I’m shocked but he convinces and tells me they’re easy and I just need to go for it with tons of speed. When Henrik tells you to do something you do it. I’m going at this thing guns blazing and melting the snow behind me. I pop off the jump and everything goes still in my mind. I realize I have no idea what I’m doing. I send it to the flats, with body contorted on impact. I’m sitting there screaming in pain, acl blown and my arm twisted backwards and broken. Right then and there I see Henrik ski slowly past me and make eye contact with no emotion on his face whatsoever besides the slightest frown. Right then and there I realized it. He knew I wouldn’t land it, it was the sego big horns all along. He was just jealous of them. After this realization, my screaming stops, I’m in complete shock and as I lay there in disbelief I hear a barking start, then slowly the sound fades into the distance until I wake up in the hospital.
