The Mentality - Double flip

Hey NS,

So I have set a bunch of goals for next years ski season, and one of the goals is to land a double flip.

I have a couple good doubles that I can land on the trampoline, and when I go up to woodward copper for the summer, I'm going to try and attempt some into their foam pit.

Usually when I try new tricks for the first time. I get real nervous but stoke myself into doing it.

But how should I mentally prepare for it? What are some good ways I can pump myself up and be capable of landing it in the first couple of tries?

First get comfortable with it on tramp/water ramp/etc. Then find a suitable kicker. As soon as you get off the lift, stop thinking about the double. Just think about getting to the top of the jump. When you get to the top of the jump take a single deep breath and drop in. As your skiing into the jump, realize that it is too late to back out. Pop. Throw the trick. Commit. Land.

I find that doing a trick on a tramp or into a foam out or something so confidently that I don't have to think about it helps. Literally get to the point that you can do it anywhere without hesitating.

Then when you get to the top of the run or jump just stop thinking. Don't think about it. Just go for it. Get the speed you need, come in balanced, commit, pop, and do what you know how to do. It works for me really well.

Find someone to try it with. My buddy and I were just getting down in the park a couple years ago and he decided to try a dub flat. He dropped in and did it, so naturally I was like fuck, I have to do it (there was a hot girl standing on the knuckle), and I just dropped in and did it through the stoked and trying to impress the girl as well.

So basically get a friend to do it with you and have a hot girl watch.

I feel if I lock it down into a foam pit or airbag or something like that with skis on, I would try it. Also I know from previous first try's that the best thing to do is just calm down and go for it.

Haha, always good to have a friend help you out and cheer you on. I don't think I have any friends that would attempt one with me haha

Dub flat 7

I was just wondering because you don't have time for all dubs on Woodward's foam pit. If you huck hard off the biggest jump you'll be able to pull that around. However, the jump to the airbag is going to be way to small to try it on. Also, I know you planned on doing it next season, but you definitely won't have enough air time on Woodward's big jump to send it.

I think you misunderstood what I said, when I go to woodward I want to try it in the Rollerskis foam pit, not actually at the camp. I was planning on trying it next ski season.

well when i tried my first dub on a tramp my cousin said the legendary phrase "dont be a pussy" so i did a double back and landed on my face but the next try i stomped it

the first time i tried i only mentioned it once that day. Later in the day we were just hitting the jumps when everyone went before me, there were two other guys up who were giving some motivation that did help a lot, however if people are yelling your name it kinda freaks me out, Basically i dropped in and really didn't think about how i was gonna do it, Do the trick on tramp or water ramp and rely on the muscle memory to put you in the right rotation, I try very hard not to over think things. Make sure you are on a big enough jump and COMMIT, it hurts about the same amount doing a dub 12 as a 360

Find a jump that works. Decide to do it and do it. Test the jump get comfy with the air time. Visualize it. Make sure you have enough speed to clear it. Nothing like knuckling as you come around on a dub to make you go "what the fuck just happened after you shit yourself"

Blasting some wu tang or what ever you're into. Just get in the zone feel it. IF you know the jump and you know the trick, you can merge the tunes. Take a deep breath, crank your favorite song and let it rip. Commit and hopefully everything goes to plan.

Def get the feel down in the foam put or bag jumps.

Honestly it weirded me out dipping into another flip as you're stalling in height. I had done them on tramps and diving boards but on a jump it was weird.

think of it this way. the worst case scenario is that you die, and I've never heard any complaints about death. so what are you worried about?

these are the two main ways that people use. personally, thinking about the trick and how you are going to do it just scares the shit out of me. i would block all thoughts in my head and not think about it. somehow pros will visualise a trick for like 10 mins before they try it for the first time, and if that was me i would just get scared and sack it

Idk. If you've never done one I would think you'd at least want to wrap your head around the rotation and the jump for a min.

I mean fuck it and huck it can work but generally you're talking large jumps in addition to two inverts.

Idk. I'm sticking to singles, 540s, and straight airs now unless I'm playing skate.
