The line between inspiration and copying edits

Hear me out, I get that people can be inspired by other edits. They'll edit in a similar style and use the same type of music, whether that be by same artist or a similar one in their own edits. But they make the edit their own and usually add something new to the table. So for the most part im cool with it.

But I've seen edit where people go as far as even straight up using the exact same song and exactly copying another recent edit they like.

I feel as if their is a faint line between taking inspiration from an edit you like and blatantly copying it.

But how much do you really care? I'd like to hear your guys and girls opinion on this.

Also I apologize if this is a repost but i couldn't find anything by search barring

Skiing is pretty difficult to copy, but it definitely bothers me if someone shoots the same trick from the same angle and slow mo's it the same way as in another edit.

I think the real big thing that bothers me though is songs, like if I see an edit with a song used in another edit and recognize it I'll immediately start comparing it to the first edit. This doesn't mean a song can be used once and never again tho, like if you think you can improve upon the first edit and do it better then go ahead, but if you can't theres not really a point.

I mean using the same song as someone else happens alot becasue people just dont watch every video, but if its done intentionally its pretty weak.

But the situation you are describing is something I have never seen outside of random kids with a gopro making edits with their friends for fun, so I don't think its actually a problem.

I just don't really edit at all. Just a few slo-mo's. No music at all. Are you cool with that?

I think the truly innovative artists understand that their own style is based on things they've been influenced by, and that it's their job to mold those ideas into a creation that becomes one that is original

Yeah exactly. I've just seen a shit ton of intentional "serious edits" lately where people will go out of there way to emulate edits such as simple sovereign. Which is what compelled me to make this thread.

Also i'm aware you arent the skier in the edit you posted (before i get called out for that). Im talking about that "Jacques the Dominator at 55 yrs. Old!" edit. That was lit.

It's all good. But really, there are only so many angles and songs so after a while they all look the same.

I started doing my commentary videos because I did not want to have music copyrights on my work.

I'll still do some music from time to time for some things, but not much.

Hope you enjoy the Real Lap series. Soma do and soma don't! Can't please them all!

Hey, here is a new angle idea. Hold the camera upside-down and see how that looks.

I guess one could just flip it over with an editor too. Ha ha.

Take care Jesse

I mean if they're not profiting from it, who cares?

It's like any form of art where copying is big compliment. It isn't until the copy is sold/profited from under the copier's name without acknowledgement to the original artist is there a problem. Idk how it would work exactly but I would imagine unless the edit you "copy" is sold itself/from a legit company, you wouldn't be able to get in any trouble if you were to copy and sell it.

It's like in music how you're allowed to sample songs that have royalties and sell them without issue. However, when you use a certain amount without dubbing it a remix or whatever then lawsuits happen. But if the song was never sold, the original artist would have a hard time suing.
