The Gentleman's Sport of Rugby

Saw the thread about the Rugby world cup and it got me thinkin.

How many other ruggers we got on NS? I understand that being from the US rugby is much less popular here than pretty much anywhere else in the country, but it is growing very quickly and that couldn't be more exciting because IMO Rugby is the most fun sport to play and watch. Who else out there loves a good rucking?

It looks pretty fun. My body wouldn't be able to handle it though... My back is already fucked up enough.

ayyy I played in high school!

I played flanker/prop for a year, then 8 man for a year, and fly half for 2 years. God I miss rugby, but it's too hard to play in college with skiing and stuff.

Nothing feels quite as good as a solid ruck. You know, when you can feel your teammates getting you from behind, and just plowing the other team off your ball. So nice.

I'll admit, even after a few of my friends got very big into it, and watching several games with my roommate in NZ last summer, I still don't fucking understand it.

I kind of get it but not really. I definitely don't understand cricket even after playing it in gym class.

I've heard it's fun, but I think I'd have to play it a bit to figure out what the fuck is going on.

Rugby was the bomb in high school. I played mostly Wing and a little bit of Full Back and Fly Half. Shit was so fun. Our team was really solid, won states back to back. Definitely missing it, for sure considering joining the club team at MSU

I played D1 rugby in college. Wing for the most part. But after college I coached a team for a while. Havent played much since, due to having both shoulders rebuilt back in 2011. Don't want to risk blowing em out again

I played fullback in high school and fucking loved it. Returning kicks and counter kicks were my shit, tries for days

Played rugby since the age of 9, at 17 I had both shoulders operated on.

Have played a season since and I'm now 19.

Was an openside or a number 8 and I love it. Such a great sport and some of my best/life friends through rugby. Gotta be prepared to get hurt and deal with it. Hoping the shoulders hold up this ski season!

seems like a cool sport, but most of the people i know who play/have played have all had some sort of serious injury at some point because of rugby

be safe out there guys

My high school's girls team has won like 8 state championships in a row. Too bad I'm a guy who skis instead

By gentlemen you mean fuckbois right?

Rugby is one of the most gentlemanly sports out there. After the game the teams come together and take a bow to the crowd, and at my high school we'd go out to dinner with the opposing team after matches.

UPDATE: Started playing for a mens club in Boise out at wing. Wing is fun as shit.

Also its awesome to see dudes in their early to mid 30s still going strong

Not in my school.

were always partying together with the other team afterwards. Fuck each other up on the field and then forget about all of it over some beers. Best sport out there (except skiing of course!)

Rugby is the shit, wing is tight. My team won two state championships. Be homies with your teammates and it's easily the best sport out, but nothing worse than a non cohesive team.

Just looked back at this and am wondering how you could start out at a prop and end up at fly half? thats wild haha, girls rugby is so much fun to watch

When I first started we had a tiny team. I was wayyyy too small to be a forward(like 5'3 135lbs). I technically started at flanker but then our one prop got hurt. So I played there for a while. Kind of alternated between prop and flanker. Then like the entire pack graduated that year so I went to 8 man cause I was one of 2 returning forwards. And then I played flyhalf my junior/senior year haha.

used to play rugby watched the world cup got stoked scotland were so close and then we got fucked over by the ref now i hate it and cry every time i see the word rugby thanks for bringing up painful memories OP

I miss rugby so much. I played inside center for 3 years, and made it to captain my senior year. Going to the U of Utah and going to the open tryouts for the team were crazy. The Pacific Islanders are unreal, and monstrous, so after 2 or 3 practice / scrimmages, I called it good. Always wanted to go to an international match too, like Ireland vs South Africa. That would be sick

Im warming up to rugby. Im warming up to soccer at a much faster rate though.

American football is just too good. I know they take a lot of breaks, but who cares, the big plays are fucking sweet.

Rugby is tough as fuck though, I'll give them that. Probably a good deal of fun to play too.

UPDATE

Currently playing at Boise State after taking a year off, fell back in love with it. Been going back and forth between wing and fullback quite a bit and college rugby is super fucked.
