The Future of the Olympics

Hey all, just wanted to get some thoughts on what you think we should expect/want from the Olympics in the future. Personally I think we should have a big mountain/freeride event in the Olympics

I would love to see freeride in the olympics but will never happen. I think despite all the hate around olympics the course that they have put together is gonna blow up the ski world its gonna be nuts. Hopefully they start doing something cool with pipe too.

I would love to see Big mountain/freeride skiing in the Olympics, but it severely limits the places in the world where they can be held. Which on a side not is why I’m surprised they added surfing for the summer games, is it going to be a wave pool? Or only places with ocean? Anyway I think Big mountain skiing would be too hard to accommodate.

I think the perfect future of the olympics is that park skiing becomes super unpopular in the program, and then the FIS can fuck off with trying to make park skiing aerials.

The slopestyle course looks so sick. Can't wait to see what people come up with.

Its pretty class that a niche sport gets shown on the world stage. Other than ice hockey, pipe and slopestyle are the most entertaining winter sports to watch.

For future olympics;

Expect/want

Balanced scoring where creativity and skill are rewarded

More freedom, less rules

Creative courses

Big jumps

Free streaming or full event replay online

Competitive field - anyone can win if they put down a class run

Increased interest in the sport worldwide especially Asia. Would be cool to have an Xgames in Japan

More money put into ski companies and pro- skiers from advertisers due to new people joining the sport

You can usually stream online for free. I know last winter Olympics I stayed up and streamed it live on NBC.com I believe

i think every olympics has a couple of events that are only in it for that olympics. ie skateboarding was added recently for rio or maybe for the next one in seoul? edit: i mean tokyo

You're stupid, they already have wind surfing and sailing in the Olympics and London isn't near the sea 😂

If they're having skiing in the Olympics they need all disciplines. They don't just have some track and field events they have them all and need to do the same for skiing. Freeride and big mountain should be included along with ski big air and dual moguls. If you have one discipline you need them all, not a select few.

Wind surfing and sailing don’t require swell though, all you need is water and wind, which London has both of, in the form of the Thames river. Also London is within 50 miles of the ocean, but again you couldn’t host surfing without a wave pool in London.

Oh ok, well then surfing, skating, and baseball might be one and done in Tokyo? If that’s the case maybe they do big mountain if they host the Olympics in like interior BC or Alaska? That would be rad

yeah i think they try to bring in a few sports unique to the location every games. japan has pretty solid surf culture - i doubt they will hold the comp in a wave pool. they also fucking love baseball

but for the same reasons people in the alaska thread were saying there will never be a big ski resort in alaska, i don't think we'll see a winter olympics there. way too remote and nowhere near enough infrastructure. ive never been to alaska though. BC just had the games 7 years ago so they probs won't go back any time soon.
