The dreaded "X" with variable ND?

i recently bought a LCW fader variable ND ii and took it out to shoot stills. i was shooting late afternoon in arches and had the filter stopped down all the way, 9 stops. even when the sun wasn't in the frame, i got the dark X across the frame. shitty. its not to big a deal with stills cuz i can check them before i shoot them, but im worried about it ruining shots when i shoot video? can anyone chime in? eheath? i think i took his suggestion and bought this specific filter.

i dont really wanna upgrade filters im poor and i know they can get up to like $400. but ill listen to anything...

I've heard of this in the cheap ones (like the $20 shitty nd faders), but idk about the lcw. You probably got a lemon.

i've had an lcw fader nd mk2 for close to 6 months now and if i go anywhere past 8 stops i get an X

I had honestly just assumed this was a downside of the two glass pieces moving together, but is there actually something wrong with mine?

holy retard

The lcw fader is kinda worthless past 4-5 stops with a wide lens. I dunno you even get the same things with more expensive faders

Yeah just how that stuff works, if you need more than 4-5 stops buy non variable
