The death of Wal-Mart

So, most of you probably know the story with Wal-Mart, and its use of Chinese production and labor in the manufacture of their products. I think we can all agree this is due to the super-low cost of Chinese laborers. America was once a production-based economy, and that provided the foundation for today. So, my question is, what will happen when China pulls the plug? We are very very far in debt, and essentially at their mercy. We can either wait for them to call it all back, or we can bring production back home...

My question is, how many of you would actually be willing to put in a hard day's work for minimum wage? I've read studies that list American auto workers as making over $20 an hour with a very healthy benefit package, and I think that's why our manufacturers went to cheaper pastures.

So would you work cheaply for your country?

And even worse, would you be able to live normally if all Wal-Marts disappeared tomorrow?

I already do. i'm only 15. min wage here is $7.15. So i work for $5.50 everyday, for 6 weeks. and to add on that, its on a farm. no easy bull.

Well, currently I do make minimum wage at the job i'm at right now. Fortunately I love the job so I don't care about the money. Secondly, I have other jobs and don't rely on this one job to sustain a family.

As for wal-mart disappearing i would be all for it. yes they are unbelievably conveniant and have almost anything you need, but the world did fine without them. if anything no wal-marts would give private entrepreneurs a new opporutnity.

Well my friend worked for the crappiest company in Austria, and even though she got free food, accommodation and ski pass, they only gave her £25 per week. Its bullshit to live off that - especially if you like to drink more than 6 beers a week.

my life would probably not be entirley upset but it would kinda suck to not have one, as much as i hate that store

last time i checked walmart was started by an entrepreneur. would it bother you if they continue to be successful?

if walmart went under small towns would be screwed, because they rely on walmarts to buy goods once walmart puts all the other local supermarkets/autoshops/any other small shops.

and outsourcing is the way everyhting is going, because no one wants to work a shitty job at a low wage and the consumer is not willing to pay more for a product only because it is made in the US. and i doubt that china will stop producing our shit anytime soon unless its in their sights to become a super power are the result of screwing us. and even if china did shot producing it, wed move all the factories to india, problem solved.

i dislike kids who take one economics class and think they understand our economy. there's so much more to the picture............
