The Cyclist Behind ‘Life Cycles’

its worth it to get the dvd just for the how it's made extra features. Incredible film, soooo much work and patience went into it.

So I just watched it.......

.... I'm still speechless. that was incredible

vanderham's whistler night segment was insane.
the whole thing was incredibly shot, very well done, not to mention the great riding.
mountain bike movies are much more about creative and good filming and scenery than ski movies, it seems to me

yea, that movie flowed so well and wasn't anything like your traditional ski movie. It told a story vs. showed you the story of someone else. very well done indeed

I think it must be something about how high level mountain biking doesnt really look that different than mid-level mountain biking, as far as DH goes, and even a bit into freestyle, but when it comes to skiing, style is so important and there is more of a gap between pro and am, even if its just the size of jump and how smooth the tricks look, so while skiers will pay to watch the higher level skiing, bike films have to attract viewers in a different way, like telling a story or having incredible cinematography.
I'm waiting for a ski movie that even approaches anything that bike movies have been doing for the last few years. (see: Seasons, Follow Me, Life Cycles, and even the NWD series)
And I just need to mention the opening segment BLEW ME AWAY with all the bike factory shots.

cinematography was amazing in that but some of the stuff done in post was so wack. vanderhams night seggy for example, i felt like i was watching an old NWD film. MEGA MOOOOOOOOOOOOO

right because they did that slow motion in post....
not like they shot it at a high frame rate with the intention of doing slow motion or anything...

Well, shit, I was talking on the phone when I wrote that, so I didn't include the whole story.

I've heard it claimed from a dude I watched the film with, who's friend worked on the movie. They had like 4 guys who's specialty was lighting come up from the US to Whistler to help them shoot it, and with a massive crew and tons of lights, they pretty much just banged it out perfect in camera. besides converting to B+W. I wouldn't be super surprised if they bumped up the contrast a little, but it was shot incredibly and they did minimal work to it.

If you look at some of the shots, you can see a small amount of contrast in the sheet. If they did a lot of post they would have easily knocked that out, but they prided themselves on doing everything perfect in camera (as it should be).

that's unreal.
i have so much respect for those filmmakers who have the courage to 'shoot it right' the first time. i'm always too hesitant that i'll change my mind in post and want to go with some other look, but it will be too late.

Agreed. Which is why I love shooting photos and working with camera RAW files. Haha.

Just finished watching this movie... and its unbelevable! The cinamatography, edditing, riding was all mind blowing. Just awesome. Everyone must watch this.
Anyway.. im off to watch it again.

eh i disagree, i think it's more that there are more ways for mountain biking to look really unique and original than it is for skiing. there are a few exceptions, for sure, but the stuff that matt hunter rides in seasons is so different than the stuff vanderham rides, even though you'd call them similar riding types/styles. you get to create absolutely EVERYTHING in a riding segment.
