Let's face it, summer is too long, why should us Quebecors have to wait until november to ski? We decided it was time to take matters into our own hands. We started on day 1 with a trip to reno depot. All we had was a sketch with no measurements and a list of items we thought we might need. We went straight to the back where they keep the plastic sheets and chose the thickness, 4.5mm Lexan and decided 10 inch wide sheets would do the trick. We were a bit unsure about its strentgh so the guy let us use and old slab and smash it with a hammer, which did absolutely nothing to it (This shit rocks!). We also decided then and there that the box would be 20 ft long. We then got our coping in the trolly and moved over to the wood section. We examined all 14 2X4's to make sure they weren't warped. We got a few drill bits, including a countersink, some screws, and we headed towards the cash. The bill added up to aprox. 400$. Stoked out of our minds, we put everything into my Honda civic, and let it hang out the back by like 3 feet. The moment we got back, we started building.

So 40 hours of labour later, and another 150$ spent at reno depot, our box was finally finished yesterday. Weighing in at about 300 lbs, here's what it looks like now.

Now the real question...would it slide? We made some trollies and placed the box on them, then tied it to the back of my car. We drove over to the closest park with some incline and set it up.

We made three trips to the nearest arena carrying buckets of snow. Then with a sketchy in run, tiny kicker and little landing, we hit the box hoping it would slide. And yes, Lexan slides like crazy! We had a small session before the lights went out, here are the pics.

im making a box, and im useing polyethine. im not done yet but it looks like good stuff.

Im going to mount it on old skis a tow it with my snowmobile.

I suggest not painting it. I think it looks really good as it it is. Or, you could just paint the raised boards, or just the indented ones.

What did you use to make the rails stay on the side? Liquid nail or something, and how much was the rods alone

good story nice box

lexans good but with the coping you couldve just used plexiglass and it woldve beena lot cheaper i made a box with plexi and no coping and i eventually broke most of the plexi off but if you have coping with it its fine and strong enoguh for normal sliding

but whatever doesnt really matter awesome job on tha tbox

 
that box is sweet, but 650 bucks?? i hope thats canadian, but still thats a shitloada money, i think u could have made it with less money and had made it lighter, but its a sick box

Yeah we just drilled the coping on the sides, we're gonna clog up the holes with P-Tex. We also put a bit of glue to hold better. The rods are galvenized steel and dont slide very well at first. We have 4 rods of 10ft each, costing about 11.50$ canadian a piece. We grinded the tips at an angle so the transition is smooth between the 2. Same with the lexan. We're only going to paint the indented part of the box, we like the wood trim. And we will also put some varnish or something just to protect the wood from water.

thats really cool, i am hoping to build a box soon for this winter, but i hope it isn't that expensive

we didnt want to make it lighter, we wanted it strong, and it's 550$ canadian. the lexan alone was 200$, then all the wood, and screws

not bad. I would have tried to spend less, but that is sick. We are looking for topsheet material to build a bow too, that lexan sounds good.

i wish the stuff i build is that nice. but then again i only buy pvc and 2X4's. that is a really nice box.
