I totally agree that gun ownership is not the only factor influencing crime rate; social services, job opportunities and higher education are the other important variables that come into play.
Here's the picture in the U.S. right now : the social services are more generous and more accessible than before but are far lower than in most other developped countries, the unemployement rate is at its highest since the great depression and top colleges are incredibly expensive to get in (Yes i know you can get a scolarship but that only applies to a tiny group of people).
Considering this, I think it's fair to say that hope is not at its highest in your country right now. What happens when people start loosing hope? Violence increases. Combine that with american pro-gun culture and you've got a receipe for disaster.
Back to gun ownership, the problem is not hunting guns or sport rifles which are only involved in a minority of gun related crimes/deaths. The problem lies within hand guns and automatic weapons, they're the ones involved in the vast majority of crimes.
I'm not saying any option is better, I'm saying that it all comes down to what you're ready to accept as a society. If you want more guns, then you have to accept that, in general, there will be an increase is gun related crimes, that's 100% guaranteed. Yes, in several cases it's totally possible that more gun carriers will stop criminal or save lives but in general there will be more deaths.
