Get a shovel, get on a park crew, eventually learn to drive a cat, do it for 15 years, then you might get lucky and a park builder will die and you might be considered for his job. I hate to be a pessimist, but don't hang your life on it.

yea isnt mammoths terrain park builder 60 or something and earns 200,000 a year, im not interested in the money but i love building jumps and to do it on a large scale

That sounds about right to me. I honestly don't know enough about this to give you real solid advice, but mountains these days pump millions of dollars into their terrain parks. You'll have to be driving a cat for a mighty long time before you get to be the head of anything. If you like shaping parks and stuff like that, try and get on a Park Crew somewhere, that will at least give you some experience and you can decide if you even like it or not. Whistler hires a ton of guys every year to work on their park crew, you would get into staff housing, have a job, be living in Whistler, and get to ride a bunch. That's pretty much the extent of it.

same here. i love building jumps and putting rails in place. take fluff for instance, he works the park at sundown(small resort in CT) and he just got back from building the summer park at hood. start small and work up my friend

^That's actually a good point. If you get a park crew job somewhere for a couple seasons, you might eventually be able to build off that and start working somewhere like Hood in the summer. It's all about experience, meeting people, and eventually you'll get somewhere.

well i think theres some serious confussion here, theres like 4 jobs that you guys are talking about ill start at the bottom:

1~park crew:this is the guy who rakes and shit and gets to rock the wack outfit

2~cat driver:this guy grooms trails and shit but may (depending on his boss) randomly get to take a stab at grooming the park

3~ park builder: this is the guy who was like the guy above and got his shot and did good and now grooms the park (the way he is told)

4: park desinger/ head park builder: this guy desings the park and tells # 3 what to do and deals with buisness end of things

theres a few people who groom our park, the best is IKE SMITH (holla) you might know him from the Bole add (holla) and i dunno exactly how much he makes but........ im guessing its less than 20$ hr. Where as our park designer (ORen Tanzer) comes up with bad ideas and has someone build them and gets paid alot, 6 figs from what i hear, but this is also mammoth and the park makes them a fuckload of loot now if you wanna get into any of this you goota be a cat driver, and work as a park crew guy wont really help you out in this area its pretty much you gotta know someone theese jobs are definatly desired and theres people who ask every year for 5 years beforethey get a maybe soooooooooo i wouldnt bett yor balls on it but good luck if you wanna try.

hope that helps

just like i said. gotta work from the bottom up.

word bucknasty, you should take over at catamount. Who do they have doing it now, and is he/she doing anything real new or different for next year?

-Your lost on MLK??? RUNNNNN RUUUUNNN the MEDIA is there RUUUUUNNNN.

- ah Ballet, men wearing pants so tight you can tell what religion they are.

It is easy to get on a park crew, you just gonna be the bitch kid for a while, but get to ski a lot. Like everyone is saying your just gonna have to start at the bottom

ah shit. i didnt mean to call sundown a resort. but hey man, i live in CT 2 hours away from any good hill, and im 13 so i can't drive anywhere.

that would be a sick job to have

-----------------------------

skiing is like sex. its hard and fun and you keep getting better at it.

My buddy Pete got a job just grooming and showed interest in building jumps and got the job like that. He pretty much gets paid to build ridiculous jumps that only 4 or 5 of us including him hit and then a kiddy section which takes up about 4% of his time.

I dont know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Park crew would be cool. Okemo an Timberline have good outfits, contray to Malone's statement that you wear wack ones.

Okemo will always take people, along with Stratton for park crew. Out west I'm not sure but I know Whistler has a lot of people as well.

Look over in the north east forum in the poconos - specifically Blue Mountain. look for a fellow "kmar... - I know that he was soliciting suggested layouts for his mountain. It couldn't hurt to take a stab at it and maybe get some recognition if you are talking about design work.

experance is the only thing they want how do you get experance well... your going to half to be park crew for a few years for starters

just to clairify, I didnt build the park at timberline, I attended cutters camp and learned from the inventors of the game.

If you think this is a carreer you want to find yourself in, start with internships, and underpaid jobs at ski areas doing whatever they;ll let you. If you're after a pay check, look elsewhere, cause you wont make real cash doing this.

become a snowmaker at your area. then get to know some of the cat drivers(most place the snowmakera are also the drivers) go for ridealongs and just talk with them and learn everything you can. i dont think that you will start in the park though(our hill has a rule of 5 years of grooming before you can do the park)

snap crackle pop

when I was young there was the main groomer guy and he always gave me rides around the village and stuff. It was pretty sweet to bad he retired and moved somewhere.
