Telemark??????

So I’ve been learning new stuff on rails and boxes on my tele skis. If i dulled the edges, would it make a major impact on making tele turns? Or would it be better to tele mount some beater skis just for rails?

Depends if you care about hard snow carving or not

I care, but I’m not carving too much. Like would i not be able to carve at all any more?

if you just detune underfoot it shouldnt make that big of a difference

I was curious about this, as most tele skis appear to be mounted pretty far forward from what I’ve seen. I have a pair of Head Motörhead 102’s that I’m going to mount up, and this may also be a touring setup. Should I go around -2?

The trend nowadays is closer to center. Pretty much how it works is you can smear the tips more in a turn and turn quicker. All you really sacrifice is floatation in powder but with skis nowadays it’s not as important. A direct center mount is really squirrelly especially in the rear ski because your toe is actually way up on the front of the ski. The -2 on my j’s is really nice although I would probably do -3 if it was a more directional ski or a powder ski. Think about your tip rocker and the shape of the ski and base your mount off of a mix of that and personal preference.

Start with beaters to work your way up. The only reason I haven’t tele mounted my Magnus’ is the dull edge.

not even giving you shit this is the most core thing ive read on newschoolers

nature there is amazing, it stretches from sea to mountains, its a very popular place all year. Extreme variation kinda depending on season and where you are there.

Anyone skied line sakanas tele? I have a friends selling them and I’m considering buying them off him

I haven't. but they look super fun, you should do it. I think the playful nature of that ski would be really well suited to tele.

Yeah I think if he puts a decent price on them I’ll go for it

My new dailies. These things rip, I think I grabbed a great ski for a tele setup. Only 1 day into tele and I’m hooked.

Also the tele community is extremely welcoming, already made a new friend the first lift ride up. Park skiers take note.

Anyone able to weigh in on the classic Meidjo vs. Lynx telemark pin binding debate?

Bishop BMFR

I was waiting for a pair of lynx but they are on back order. Seems like all of them are finicky / have their issues. I’ve listened to a ton of freeheel life podcasts, Craig Dostie is the tele gear guru for sure. Seems like the lynx has more kinks worked out than meidjo.

I ended up with the Bishops because a used pair came up. I have no other experience on tele haha so I have no reference point at all. I can rip parallel turns on the BMFR, due to the full frame style it makes sense. It’s nice to be able to make regular turns during the learning process. I have no regrets getting on tele, I can see the dust collecting on my alpine stuff already

I got boots for 200 and skis for 50. I have got a solid enough turn down now I think I might get a nice set of skis/bindings. My scarpa boots are perfect though. Best fitting pair I have.

Yea dude same here on the Scarpas. I have TX pros and they fit me like a dream

Lynx work on rails when they’re locked out and not thrown into too much of a spin. I honestly like that they release a little more than standard ntn or tele bindings.

Agreed. The duckbill adjustable releasability of the meijdos is appealing but they feel so plastic-y.

I visited the 22 designs factory to get my outlaws repaired and checked out the updated lynx, snappier toe springs and an improved claw. Pricey tho

Not nearly as pricey for the industry workers. I bought a used pair of outlaws that might need to be taken in as well.

My outlaws creak when they flex, would they fix that if I sent them in to 22?

Idk but my pivot screws for the at mode are wobbly and I think it’s the little gold shims that needs replaced. Squeaky tele bindings have just always been a thing.

Do you ski with or without brakes on your outlaws? I had wobbling problems when i didnt use brakes, but it went away with brakes on. Maybe that would work for you

I don’t, and I lot of people I know use the leashes instead. I always catch my inside tip on the brake in a turn and then deposit myself

Does anyone prefer 75mm over NTN? I've been on 75mm for three years now and tried one day demo'ing NTN and didn't like them, but I'm sure it was just the setup I was on. I have the AXLs and the Switchback X2s and love them both.

I've met a few guys who preferred 75mm. Mostly old dudes, but also met a dude my age who ripped on 75. I think the 75s feel a little more surfy, and guys like that.

I’m riding ntn for performance and boot fit reasons but nothing will beat a loose ass 75 mm. Honestly everyone should be learning on low spring retention 75 mm bindings. Learning on ntn won’t teach you proper technique because the springs provide an opposite experience from a neutral binding.

No brakes, I got a good deal on a heavily used pair that I’ve been riding in the park. The play in the pivot point definitely makes them perform like hammerheads rather than the vice or axl. I’m still waiting on my outlaw x to show up with the brakes so I’ll definitely mess around with them once I get them.

little tele backflip from loon this past weekend. Still figuring out the landing on these skis, I'm so used to centermount, and landing on tele seems like it needs to be perfect to make it look smooth.

I have a pair of old 4FRNT YLES with Marker Barrons on them that I rarely use. I'm thinking of turning them into a tele or NTN set up. Anybody got some binding/boot recommendations for a beginner or are most set ups fine for whatever skill level? My feet are pretty normal, would I be okay getting some boots online? Looking for some used gear to save some dough

Most people use scarpa for ntn setups these days. I’ve heard good things about their tx pro and comp. I have scott voodoos and they are great too. Crispi usually has stiffer flex and a mediocre walk mode.

its a lot of personal preference, so it might not be the best for you, but the scarpa stuff is a really good all round boot for most.

Do some research before buying online. Some boots run small or big so just be aware of that

Good to know thanks! Did you size your Tele boots similar to your downhill boots? My regular shoe size is 10.5 but I run a 26.5 ski boot which is a size smaller I think. Do people usually go slightly bigger on tele boots though, so they don't pinch your toes?

I sized mine directly from my alpine boots (27.5 for alpine, 27.5 for tele). I think most people go for a similar fit to alpine boots when they get tele boots. There isnt really much benefit for a bigger boot in tele
