cause its different, but mainly its a lot harder, and is a new challnge for the accomplished skier. or its the mountain version of XC skis. the freeheel type ski is refereed to as a whole as nordic, while fixed heel stuff is alpine

it's just more variety in the snow if you go up to the hill 100+ days a year it's a nice change when skiing starts to feel old. plus when you start throwing tricks on tele's and then get back on alpine skis you have way more power, your tricks are way smoother and you stick your landings better. i try to get 20 or so days on tele's because it's a killer work out to get ready for bike season.

The original reason for tele's was for backcountry skiing. The are very versatile because you can strap some skins on and go up hill and all over the place like cross country skis. And when you're at the top, you can take em down, which you couldn't do with regular cross country skis.
