Talking to family from Europe

Hey guys,

Im going to Europe for a month next week and I was wondering what you guys used to stay in touch with home while you were there?

I've heard WhatsApp is good but I don't know how it's good for over there.

I've also heard about Kik.

Lemme know what you guys think.

K+ for solid responses

If you can access to free wifi then you can use whatsapp or kik, otherwise I wouldn't use anything internet related.

When I was abroad I used Viber for pretty much everything. You can make calls and send texts over WiFi. Skype works well too, WhatsApp is good, but you can only text.

There's also Talkatone which allows you to call any number. So if you're parents have a landline or a non smartphone you can call it rather than having to use the app and be limited to calling only those contacts.

Just download a few of those apps and tell your family to get at least one.

I used email and skype on my Nexus tablet, which was actually awesome. A lot cheaper than a laptop and a lot easier to carry around, provided you are going the backpack route. Lots of hostels have free wifi, and honestly most of the hostels I stayed at were both nice and cheap.

Where in Europe are you going?

I live in Germany and I just text normally from my phone. Everything gets sent in iMessages anyway so it's free. You can Facetime or Skype if you want to talk to them like that as well.

I'm going to Iceland, Stockholm, Prague and then doing some hiking in Austria in Switzerland.

Oh ok cool. Well that is pretty much everywhere I did not go, except for Switzerland, which is really nice but expensive.

Enjoy Europe and talk to them when you are back. You can chat on fb or whatever if you have internet or send email.

Anyone who wants to talk in person or skype you is being selfish tell them to fuck off.
