Taking padding out of helmets

No it doesn't. The padding nowadays is there just for comfort and sweat. The shell is what is going to protect you. Helmets aren't made to avoid you from hurting your head; but to avoid you being injured.

I aint sure and have no proof but I feel like some helmets have a more snug fit (therefore safer?) when having the pads on. I don’t have them on myself for couple of reasons but its prolly less safe not to

the foam itself does nothing to increase safety in a crash, it's purely comfort. I've pulled mine out because I always wear a beanie under mine so I get that comfort back, but you'd be pretty dumb to pull it out and have the foam layer directly on your head.

that being said though, a firm fit is still important, ESPECIALLY if you're someone with one of the MIPS helmets, where you want the inner layer firm on your head, but so the shell can move around like designed for shearing impacts, but either way you don't want a helmet that has excessive movement. honestly just common sense really
 
I took the padding out of my helmet so i could wear a toque under it. Doesn't affect the comfort, but I don't recommend wearing just the helmet without padding
