Taking away 3rd party embedding... my thoughts.

I understand that you want to keep all of our videos with your servers, business reasons, whatever they may be.

I'm just worried that even with the HD upgrade it says your going to achieve, it wont be AS nice as vimeo.

Vimeo has all of my videos on it, and i sorta like it that way, they've perfected the HD handling.

Sites like blip.tv and youtube also have HD modes, but they're still crushing the quality. I'm worried that that's how HD-NS is gonna turn out.

Don't take it away?
 
I think for many who use HD, they will still put on Vimeo and post links to the HD version in the comments so people can view it. I can see how NS wants more money but jeeze
 
Yeah I agree. On NS you can post huge file sizes (786 mb i think), but even if you can somehow get that to work (most of the time the NS uploader doesnt even work) it still is not on point with vimeo. Vimeo you can upload up to 500 megs, and its still HD and streams well. I dont know what it is about NS, but if you put a file on here around that size it will take DAYS to load and wont stream very well and the quality is still not at as good as vimeo. Im not writing this to rip on NS, I just want this to finally be right. You guys have been trying for months, but it is still not there.
 
Yeah.

Also, even though the .mov download button is there, most people don't use it, because it takes a week or two to fully load.
 
Honestly, am I the only one how doesn't really understand why NS needs to host videos anyway?, Im really doubting all the storage space and bandwidth is cheap, and youtube and vimeo have it covered pretty good...

my 2$ USD.
 
wow NO i am not going to watch another 30 second axe commercial just to see every single ski flick that comes on here.

I actually don't even watch videos hosted on nsers anymore unless if its toprated; the commericals are way to anoying.
 
i get them for the first vid i watch but then if i stay in the vid section i don't get them anymore
they also don't appear if the vid is embedded in a thread
i use safari with no special ad blocking shit
 
There is still a TON of work to be done. The uploader sucks and we're completely aware of that. Fixing that is a big task, and one that will take us a decent amount of time to do. We're working on it.

As for the quality, its all about tweaking the encoder settings to get what will make everyone happy. Once we've got the uploader fixed we can work on this problem.

We here are determined to give you a good video viewing experience. We'll keep working on it until we get it right.

In terms of allowing vimeo, no way. This is the ski industry and we should be keeping the business in the family. I know the ads are annoying, but its short sighted to think that Vimeo won't eventually have the some sort of advertising. We're going to experiment with lots of different stuff and get something that works for everyone.

One thing I find super interesting is that you have to pay on vimeo for HD right? Would you guys pay subscriptions for enhanced features like this or others?

Its the summer now... we're game on for figuring this out.
 
Definitely interesting and I see now where you are coming from more clearly in relation to ads. In order to host video one must "pay a price", in the members case this is watching ads becuase the admins to need to pay for goods.
The only main diffrence here is that the "ski community" is limited but growing. Now in order to post a video you need to be a member as with vimeo, but not everyone is going to see NS as a video hosting site as many do to Vimeo. I know that I use vimeo to host more than just ski videos to post here.
I really dont know where I am going with this, but regardless people will still upload to NS and foreign embed doesn't seem terrible because you can still watch the vids uploaded to NS without ads...i dk
 
Read closely... there's the whole part about not using videos for commercial use. Vimeo is just supposed to be a way to share with friends, not the masses.

That eliminates us. Having them on vimeo could have all those vids all of a sudden removed.

The main concept we're going for here is you host your ski vids on NS, then your other vids somewhere else.

You can then embed everything on your facebook page.

This means that any production company/ski company that is using vimeo to host videos will have their videos yanked eventually.

We want to support you here at NS and give you that place to host your videos. If you're looking to be legit, then Vimeo is the wrong place to be.
 
Once the video system here on NS gets real legit and people start using it more I can see embeds getting yanked without an issue. There is definite flaws that seem need to be catered to and should be before the embeds are done. (i.e status bar, gaurenteed upload) I have notice that some of my videos in .mov haven't been able to be uploaded forcing me to use vimeo.

Now the vimeo issue. Vimeo is also dealing with an issue that is above NS. They are in existance because they can't premote business or w/e. (well the people using vimeo cant). I think most people on here (NS) are using vimeo for personal preference and not monetary gain, therefore most our videos wont be removed because we are sharing our stuff there.

It makes sense doug that you are in the best outlook for the members and that NS should be a place for everyone to host videos. I like that. I also like how you are in a sense warning us about the potential removal of our vids from vimeo. The more and more I think about this topic it grows on me.
 
I know hosting isn't cheap, and that there are greater concerns for the people uploading the videos, but as a viewer the speed NS videos load at is incredibly annoying. I'm not sure how many other people have this problem but the videos hosted here load at least half as fast as anywhere else for me, if not worse.
 
i love ns, favorite site on the web, but its a skiing community site not a video site. NS doesnt have video down, the ui is stock, uploader is iffy, and im used to vimeo. i can also suscribe to other people on vimeo, and it is set up so it posts something in my facebook page when i upload to vimeo.
 
We're fully sticking to exactly this. We want our system to be dialed before we pull anything. The last thing we want to do is downgrade your guys video experience.

We're working on a new uploader with status, larger upload, and all those features that make it actually good. Its totally a piece of shit right now. :)

We won't take away the embeds until we've addressed this.

If you do have a failed conversion, please alert us and give information! Most of these problems can be fixed. For instance at the beginning there was a couple of types of .mp4 that were failing, but once we got an example file it took about 30 seconds to fix it.

The important thing to us is that people give our system a try, so we can offer the kind of quality that people want. We don't want you to hate coming to NS from Vimeo, we want you to love it.

As for the speed issue... do many people find the videos buffer slowly? They buffer nice and speedy for me, and the servers aren't even close to where I live.

 
vimeo edits in HD is lagging on my laptop. But NS videos work perfect, and i use the download button whenever i find something i want to put on my ipod.
