Tail butters and how to learn them

I've got a pretty decent nose butter at low speeds and the know-how how to improve it. Took me a while but always knew I'd get them after enough practice.

But how on earth do tail butters work without having your lower calves explode? My boots (Dropkicks with Zipfits & stiffest tongues & Booster straps) fit good, my skis (prodigy 3.0) aren't overly stiff and they have rocker, and I just can't even tail manual without sharp pain.

Halp.

shift your weight back like you are doing a squat and drop down a little more to put pressure on the back of the ski, put the weight into your thighs

perc 30 make you lean backwards already so u can tail butter easy just get some perc 03

Where the achilles tendon connects to the calves. Especially on the outer sides, between the spina fibida and the achilles tendon. The same place hurts the most when landing too backseat.

Where do you feel the pain? You could just have old beaten up knees.

Hmm I’ve never encountered this problem.

Switch carve into a knuckle- do a nice big setup carve itll help you set the rotation while being on the tails. As you get closer to the top gradually lean back and when you’re as the crest you should be all the way back… be patient with it

The flex patterns need to match between your boots and skis. Stiff tongue and straps means pain! You need to be able to bend your body to butter your skis.

I have been trying to tell y'all for a decade that you can't freestyle ski in race boots, but I'm cray cray...right?

From a kinesiology standpoint, per my physical therapist, it would be important to have knees bent somewhere between like 40-80° which is where your thigh muscles can stabilize the knee more than the ligaments. Honestly I always feel a bit of pain tail buttering but I'm not super good at them (and don't plan on practicing).

However, tighter/stiffer boots definitely help more imo. I feel pain like you describe when it's warm out and I'm swimming in my boots until I tighten them down a bit. I just got Booster straps and it made nose butters way better for what it's worth

You shouldn't be posting when you're intoxicated.

Sounds like I'll keep on not learning them.

it will hurt untill it don't. that's how i learned them

Thanks. Will try to squat more and engage the quads and see what happens. Yes, the difference on a nose butter between a flip-flop fit and a proper ski boot fit is like night and day. Just like practically everywhere else on the hill too.

Never landed that backseat. Maybe you should hit the gym more than your keyboard?

305 squat isn’t too crazy but I’m happy with it, I spend enough time there

Either way, I read your cork 3 thread , and its apparent your stiff boots are preventing you from bending your knees in to an athletic stance for take off. Being locked up right is whats stopping you from doing freestyle trickery. You can adjust the forward lean on your boots, but the stiff tongue and strap will be binding you up.
