T2i vs Camcorder like TM700 or similar..

1) What is your budget? How much money can you spend right away, and do you think you can get more money to invest in the future?

Right way like $400-600 I was thinking, then I could spend a little more in the future

2) What experience do you already have with cameras? Have you ever even used one before? Have you helped your friend out with his camera? Have you owned your own?

Not a ton, just looking for something that does better then iPhones we currently use to film

2) What gear, if any, do you currently have? (tripod, old camera lenses, mics, etc)

an old tri-pod in my parents closet..

4) What are you planning to shoot and how do you want to use your camera? Are you going to use this with the sole purpose of shooting skiing? or do you think you might try other stuff as well (movies, documentaries, short films, etc)

Using it for snowboarding, lifestyle shots, ect.

5) Do you want a camera that you can hand to your friends, that could or could not have film experience, and let them shoot you? or will you be doing all the filming?

I will probably be doing the filming but if there are like auto-mode or if I can set it up for them and just have them hit record that would be nice.

6) When filming skiing, how do you tend to shoot? (follow cams, leave it on record on a tripod and hike, film from a tripod, etc)

I'd consider one of those top handles to get the down low possibly with fish eye look. Maybe get a tripod too. Not so much follow cams but some I guess. I like the look of skate edits.

7) What computer do you currently have/use to edit (if not currently editing, what would you most likely use)? If you can provide specifics, such as hard drive space, RAM, processor size, that would be great.

Mac Book Pro 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7

7) What program do you currently edit on? How familiar are you with it (1- just learning; 10- I can make tutorials and know the keyboard layout)

1, haven'd downloaded Final Cut yet. Want to learn to make basic edits over summer of random stuff (camping, skating, boating, ect) so when winter comes I sort of know what I'm doing

---------------------------Optional Section, for those seeking a more intensive upgrade/purchase------------------------

1) Do you think you might consider using a DSLR?

I'm thinking about it but I guess I don't really know whats all involved or if its more complicated then something I can sort of jump into. I have a friend thats really into photography so I could learn some stuff from him over the summer

2) Do you have any knowledge about the HDSLRS?

What now?

3) Do you know the limitations to using HDSLRS?

Nope

4) Are you willing to take the time to learn about a DSLR, and how to shoot with manual lenses?

Again, I'm thinking its just something that I'll be able to pick up after using it for a solid month or so, but I'm talking out of my ass and don't really know what I'm talking about.

5) Again, do you want a camera that you can hand to your friends, that could or could not have film experience, and let them shoot you? or will you be doing all the filming?

I'm fine with filming, but if theres like auto-mode or I can just set it up for them so I can hit the feature a few times that would be nice.

Oh and given my budget I was thinking I'd try and find something lightly used, hopefully something some dad bought, stuck in a drawer and forgot about.

It sounds like a TM700 would be better for you. The only issue is, as far as I know, Final Cut can't edit AVCHD. This might of changed but I had some problems with it in the past. You could always use Clipwrap to convert them though.

I am also very biased as I love my TM700 and have never used a T2i so keep that in mind.

If you want to see some videos taken on a TM700, all my videos from the past year were.

I have used both, and now I own a tm700. The convenience is uncomparable to a dslr camera. There are some lenses and mics you can also but for the tm700 along with cheaper steady cams because it is lighter

log and transfer, and I think there are a few other ways with outside programs, at least for fcp7. Or get cs6, he said he hasn't downloaded anything yet, and you can even set the key layouts to be the same. Plus with cs6, you can get after effects and take advantage of 64 bit. Fcp7 is 32 bit so it wouldn't be able to take advantage of the full power of his macbook pro.

Yeah it's just inconvenient.

OP, Getting premiere is probably a better option no matter which camera you get.

Bump

My main thing is I'm wondering if the T2i is too much for me just starting out.

being about to take pics would also be nice though, since my only other camera is a phone.

A t2i isn't too much for anyone. It comes down to whether or not you are going to put in the time, effort, and money to learn to use it and build a decent setup.

Now I'm lost in the world of lenses. Idk this might be too much for my budget. I just wanted to be able to make a few decent edits so me and my friends have something to show for all the riding we do.

Lens are nice to have if you really get into it, but just starting out you could get like a 50mm f/1.8 which is cheap only like 100$, and I am looking to sell my t2i for 400 so that'd be 500$ which a budget of 400-600 it's a good starting set up.
