Synthesizers for beginners

Anybody who knows music stuff can chime in, I’ve been experimenting making semi-melodic noise with an MPD218 pad, which is cool but I am wanting to steer more towards synthy/wavy sounds. What is a good and inexpensive synthesizer to start that I can hook up midi style and lay down some waves?

There are a lot of free software synthesizers, maybe not what you are looking for but still good for learning sound design. Vital is really good.
